My long term project - LS1 z/28
« on: November 06, 2006, 01:23:47 pm »
Alright guys!!

I met a few f you Sunday (5th Nov).

This is my 99 (2000 reg) Camaro z/28:

The Ls1 is quite capable in stock trim:

But I find myself wanting more!

So, my plan is to make a totally bad ass street car that can play ball with the best, in corners as well as the straight. Sadly money's tight at present so it may take a little time. Plus I keep spending money on my other vehicles too:

Triumph TR7 V8 - lots done and even more spent over the years. V8 conversion, cammed, heads, 4 brl carb, LT's, exhaust, big brakes, interior and lots of other mods. Currently is in need of a new diff as I bust the last one

Land Rover Discovery (for the dirt!!!) - Just had to fit a new engine as I slightly over fueled the last one and blew it up, but it did make great power for a diesel Also just fitting a new floor as the old one was rusted out. Hope to have it back on the road by the New Year ready to do some more competative trials. As you can see its only ever so slightly stock.

So to the z/288 build:

Currently the car is pretty stock. Just a SLP Loudmouth catback exhaust. I've got a set of UMI Performance SFC's (subfame connectors) waiting to go on. I've also performed the FRA (free ram air) and throttle body bump stop mod. Next up will be porting the throttle body.

Stage 1:

TSP air box Lid - Texas Speed & Performance
Perma Cool 20-22000 GVW Transmission Cooler - Texas Speed & Performance
SUPER STOCK 3600 stall (torque converter) - Yank Coverters

Stage 2:

Revalved Bilstein Shocks - Strano Performance
Custom Sway Bar Kit - Strano Performance
Strano Performance Parts Lowering Springs - Strano Performance
TransGO Shift Kit - Thunder Racing

Stage 3:

PaceSetter Ceramic-Coated Long Tube Headers. With TSP 3" Y-Pipe with Hi-Flow Catalytic Converters - Texas Speed & Performance
24" O2 Extention - Texas Speed & Performance
Prothane Polyurethane Transmission Mount - Thunder Racing
Prothane Polyurethane Motor Mounts (Pair) - Thunder Racing
Y-Pipe "Bump Stop" Hanger (Mufflex) - Thunder Racing
GM LS1 Exhaust Manifold Gasket - Thunder Racing

Stage 4:

Single Adjustable Lower Control Arms & Panhard Bar Kit - UMI Performance Inc
Control Arm Bolt Upgrade Kit - UMI Performance Inc
Chrome Moly Shock Tower Bace - UMI Performance Inc
Super LubeŽ Synthetic 14oz. Grease Tube - UMI Performance Inc
Super LubeŽ Synthetic Rod End Rust Preventive Lubricant - UMI Performance Inc

Stage 5:
TSP Camshaft (MS4 - 239/242.649/.610 on a 110LSA) , PRC Spring Kit & Pushrod Package - Texas Speed & Performance
Ls6 intake manifold - Texas Speed & Performance
EFI Live - FlashScan Commercial Tuning software - EFI Live
Thunder Racing Complete Braking Package Baer Eradispeed Rotors - Thunder Racing

This should make for quite nice setup with over 400rwhp in a car that should stop and corner with the best

Will probably run some nice 17x9.5 American Racing Torque Trust II rims. With Mickey Thompson Street ET Radial P275/40R17 on the rear.

After this will probably look at some nice heads to raise the SCR/DCR and increase flow. Similar setups have made over 480rwhp (manuals).

Of course I may change my mind and go for a Procharger centrifugal bower or GMR Speed single turbo setup instead.

Sadly the stock 10 bolt rear will probably not last, although with an auto it doesn't take the same pounding as a manual car. Also the 4l60e trannys hate high revs and a cam really needs at least 6500rpm shift points so I guess in time it will be toast also.

Probably won't be able to get started on much until next year, but hopefully will have the SFC's done before then as well as finishing off the ported TB.

Will post progress and any changes.

That may be something that Titsy will be interested in ?

That's quite a shopping list, as most of us say " You can't have too much power ! "

I think the problem is knowing when to stop ?

Is that you parked next to me at Classics on the Common this summer?

I thought I recognised your 'plate off' antics!

I went off and wandered about for ages so wasn't really by my car. Cracking show this year though.

Edge's hat has magically disappeared...

One minute it was there, the next it was gone.
Almost like magic you might say...

Yeah I saw my old Capri 3.0S there this year.

Really wanted to buy it back as it's in the same condition I sold it in and good ones are getting rare now.

Then you remembered that it's a Ford and you own a Chevy so it doesn't matter.

If you want to speak to someone who's done most of that on a 4th gen and learnt the hard way, give me a call. Me? I'd go with a 402 stroker from scratch if I had to do it again.

Example 1:Take lots of measurements before fitting LT's and lowering springs on the same car - I was constantly having to weld up holes in the collectors where they scraped over speed bumps

Example 2: Take your time porting the TB, for the very limited increase in power you might achieve you can can cause major problems for yourself if you take too much off in the wrong place

Are you sure you don't already have a trans cooler fitted?? I thought they fitted them to the +2000 models?

I have a nice shiny SLP black tower brace for sale, unmarked. I might even have a ported and polished TB lurking around in the garage somewhere.

Or run a 150 shot of gas and get 450rwhp straight away

oh, and I have a spare rebuilt gearbox for when yours goes bye bye shortly after fitting the torque converter and drag radials

Cheers. Yeah I'd love to go for a aluminium 402ci from TSP, but it's the shear cost of doing it. Sadly I'm going to be fighting the finaces the whole way on this.

My's a 99, although I didn't know 2000+ had a tranny cooler as standard. .

Yeah, it's not the stall that worries me but the higher rpms for the cam. There are some nice built tranny's in the US such as Finish Line Transmissoins.

Stall & Dr's will probably mean busted 10 bolt though :(

Yep always the weak link, that's if the prop shaft UJ's don't resign first
