Anyone know diesels?
« on: October 06, 2006, 07:57:56 am »
Not a yank sorry, a VW but still trying to get it done to get a yank
Changed a slow 1.6D to a more modern '95 polo caddy van diesel engine:

VW code: AEF 1.9 Diesel 80k from a polo put in

before i put the engine in I changed cam belt - slipped so spent ages learning how to time up and making sure its right or atleast close

got it running, wasnt perfect but idled nicley, not too smokey etc

took for several runs - fine

THEN started to run a little rougher

went on holiday, came back

Put down pipe and silencer on it

decided to finish off fuel lines etc, injector 1 was bubbling where ive had it out to do TDC, broke it getting it out - the return nosle thing

put 1.6 injector on it from my old engine - then it didnt want to idle at all - real smokey

logical its the injector right?? - bought the right injector, AND seal, put it in, started it, runs great for 3 seconds then it starts spluttering and white smoke everywhere

thats all it does

no air in fuel lines - not even 1 bubble.

figured the silencer must be blocked, so took that off started again and
SAME THING

Any ideas at all?  wild guesses apprechiated - a n y t h i n g!!

If the timing wasnt exactly right you could have trashed a valve, remember that dielse engines run cr of around 20:1. You need a special tool to time a diesel motor up correctly

i know you need the dial thing to time it up properly but i just wanted it close enough to take to a garage..  after i did the timing i cranked the engine around by hand several times to make sure nothing was getting caught - took me a few goes to get it right.

what i cant understand is why it ran just fine for a bit - took it for several runs up and down the farm road THEN started to run a little rougher, THEN all the white smoke and spluttering / no propper idle etc

could be a piston/rings fault or when you put the smaller injector on you fcuked the pump

Just found this:

Why do diesel engines smoke?
Diesel engine smoke is caused by incomplete combustion. White smoke is caused by tiny droplets of unburned fuel resulting from engine misfiring at low temperature. This smoke should disappear as the engine warms up. Black smoke could be caused by a faulty injector, insufficient air and overloading and/or over-fueling the engine. Blue-gray smoke is the result of burning lubricating oil and is an indication the engine is in poor mechanical condition.

Its thick white smoke so hopefully wont be the piston rings.. stupid engine working then not wtf..

Are you sure the glow plugs are working properly? They can cause white smoke if there not getting hot enough.

Yes i was thinking about water in the tank as the van was left standing for a while before i put new engine in and havent put any new diesel in the tank.

BUT weird:

went over to the barn at lunch and started it, but was doing same thing, then something weird:

Sorry about picture - the picture shows the pump, injectors, pipes that connect all injectors togetther (small rubber one) and the big return pipe going back to the tank.

When i TAKE OFF the last small rubber pipe that connects to the return part of the pump - THE ENGINE RUNS FINE - but diesel is poring out of that pipe.  Whats going on????????????????????????????

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????

sounds like a blockage in the return line or the pump

HmmMmmMMmmMmm ok, what is that part of the pump doing, does it take unused diesel from the purple pipes and pump it back to the tank?
