been on 3rd gen.org they are all saying o2 sensor and read some posts with similar probs but they all noticed a problem with a deadspot at high RPM,And alot are intermitant faults,Also some are saying smog pump relay not sending back to exhaust but back into manifolds,But thats going to have nothing to do with fuel/Air mixture,I see im going to loose sleep over this one

Well having been told by a mate who works at a GM dealership in Tx that its not an o2 sensor its up to you mate if you continue along this route. If it was the o2 it would throw a fault. Nedd to get it on a techII or ODB scanner to be sure of that but rafe said he hasnt seen the ses light

Oh no mate sorry i know its not the o2 sensor ive code read the whole system and checked the o2 sensor,Im just saying that whatever they say on 3rd gen.org ive checked already and its ok,Ive actually gone over the car 3 times now to check everything.
I said to Rafe that ive got a mate coming over from the States who worked on these at GM in the 80's-90's he now has a tuning place out there hes the only guy i know who knows everything about these cars

No problem mate hate to see some one spending a lot of time for no reason. My mate says it could be a lazy fuel pump or the fuel bypass on the regulator he doubts its an ecm fault. You can be sure its gonna be a PITA to solve. My thoughts would be fuel pump as they are known to fail. Only way to check would be to fit an external pump and take it to another chassis dyno

Either way, it looks like I'm going to have to take it easy until the next rolling road day, and try and bribe Rocky into coming along for the ride!

If I drive the car under normal conditions (changing up well before 4000rpm), I won't do her any harm will I?

Thats a tricky one mate, if it is a fuel pressure problem it could get slowly worse without you really noticing and before you know it meltdown. Personaly i would get it sorted sooner rather than later. Not sure when the next rolling road day will be so you might end up having to book it into a place like we went to to get it sorted

On the off chance that their machine was the cause of an error in the first place, I would take it somewhere else for a second opinion first.

Preferably local to Rocky in case he was able to come along, as I doubt I'm going to find an 80's GM V8 specialist with a rolling road within 100 miles of where I live!

That was a brand new rolling road that cost over £100k mate i doubt there was an error on it. You should be able to find a rolling road in the yellow pages but i doubt they will let you bring your own mechanic along to do any work

I just need a fuel pressure gauge hooking up to it on the rolling road, which shoud give us a better idea of the problem.

Fit a fuel pressure gauge you can see inside the car, then blat it down the road.

Autometer.

Thought the autometer one was for external use? most fuel pressur guages are real big money if they are for in car use as the pressure senders are expensive. My SPA design one in the pontiac was £160

Hopefully Rocky can get hold of this guy with a rolling road.

I'll wait before contacting any nearer my end.

Looks like I may as well just get the fuel pump changed as most people seem to think that is the cause of that Rolling Road reading despite the car running fine since.

Getting it Rolling Roaded without a group rate is going to be approx £70, and fitting a Fuel Pump Gauge will also cost. To do either of these and then just find out it was the fuel pump all along will be frustrating, and Rocky has ruled out most other options of cause already.

There's an outside chance it could be a faulty Regulator, but Rocky says he's very rarely witnessed this on these cars. It could be that 4 years off the road (1999 - 2003), and with the fuel filter not being changed when the fuel lines were done, could have put pressure on the fuel pump and lead to it's premature demise.

Looks like I'm going to have to bite the bullet on this one, as it's a nasty old job apparently. At least Ryan bought his car knowing the job had already been done!

Not fun, but do-able - even for D.I.Y'ers . . .

Drop exhaust, remove tank.

Sounds like a right laugh!

Not one for doing on your drive at home by the sounds of it.
