Sanding, Filling, Sanding, Filling...
« on: August 08, 2006, 06:30:13 pm »
I'm having a go at cleaning up some of the surface rust on my rear arch.

I've power sanded the rust back to bare metal, then applied a basic primer. This has highlighted some low spots, so I have applied a high-build primer and started to sand it back.

The problem I have is the paper is clogging very quickly, and not doing the job properly.

What's my problem here and what's the solution?

Am I sanding too early? (24 hours later).  Do I need a different grade paper? Use water? Something else?

should be using 800 wet and dry in a water solution with some washing liquid, make sure you rinse plenty

Normally means paint is still soft but as 55starchief says 800 wet flat should be ok for you

What grade paper were you using then mate? you can dry block high build with 240 grit and brush it out regular. would also mist over the panel with some black as a guide to see high and low spots when your flatting

More importantly what high-build primer have you used ?

I reckon I've used just about every one on the market and would only recommend Bodyline Trade as it's good but cheap . . . Or U-pol - which is expensive but the best IMO.

I think I had some 240 and 400.  The 240 seemed to clog more, and both clogged almost instantly.

Yeah, Rocky said about doing that, but I'm only doing a quick job for now, make it look presentable.  I don't really have the time to do a pucker job (and I'm doing it on the driveway!)

Eeek, No.

Their stuff is nasty.

It's quite dear for what you get, the paint is prone to clogging and it has and amazing ability to surface dry quite hard, but leave the lower layers still wet and runny.

Personally I'd say Hellfrauds was the worse High build primer I'd ever used.

Bugger.

Where can I (easily) get hold of something better?

U-Pol is available at local car shops (eg. at Motorserv in MK) and at Pro-paint supplers, too (eg. MK Paint supplies).

Bodyline I haven't seen in some time, TBH, so you'll be lucky.

Another reasonable one to look for is Simoniz, commonly found in local car shops . . . Not really to pro-standards but good stuff and cheap.

I found a good rule of thumb is to go for the stuff in the larger cans . . . 500ml+ . . . As (for some reason) seems to be better.  The smaller stuff in smaller cans, in my experience, never mixes well so never applies well.

Is The Motorist Center worth visiting?  There's one (just about) on the way home for me.

Dunno that one.  Have a look, though.

I had a theory that every high build primer in the smaller cans was made by the same people as It always came out the same colour and smelt the same, too . . .

Hycote springs to mind, too . . . their paint is good but I'm not sure if they do a High-build primer or not . . . If they do, I've used it, but I can't remember . . .

1k high builds are ok but no where near as good as 2k versions used by pro shops. If its a temp reapir the 1k is good enough if your planning on having it painted properly at some point 2k all the way

Use U-Pol.

It's a little dearer but is excellent (and near idiot proof)

You can absolutely smother a panel in the stuff and It still dries hard and flats down nicely - leaving a like glass finish.

I got through 3 cans of the stuff when prepping the paperweight for paint.

Fine if you're doing a whole car, but for bit work the U-Pol aerosol is fine.

I think they call it "U-Pol #5".

True, but I'm guessing not everyone has a compressor and a decent gun to hand . . . . . . .

I don't have the money or the need to invest in spraying equipment.  I'm only doing small repairs.
