Before :

Couple of hours later :

Well it has to be something to do with polishing doesn't it

Before :

Getting ready :

After :

Amazing how rough the original GM die casting is
I really need to take the whole thing off to get to the underneath

Can't beat a bit of polishing therapy [polishing smilie].

You really do have a problem there mate... I think you need a different type of therapy.... But good work nether the less....

Now you need to get to work polishing the inside where it matters ...

I couldn't work it out until you did the close ups.

Still, a massive difference on the finish now.

Martyn . . . .

If I throw in a bottle of Autoglm do you fancy polishing my new manifold for the Caddy ?

Seriously.  I was eventually gonna pay to get it done - but if you want to feed the polishing monkey I don't mind throwing some cash your way so you can further feed your addiction ?

The start of a long road.  Once you get one shiny bit, you'll have to do the next bit, then the next, and eventually you'll end up like Martyn

Hehehe.

I have a set amount of Shiny bits planned for the Caddy's engine bay . . .

Most of which are already pre-polished (ally).

There really isn't that many shiney things on the Camaro, the Aircon condenser and pipes, couple of fittings and now the intake casting

if you want the inlet o the caddy shiny, get it plated, polished ones need constant maintainance or they will look absolutely horrible in less than 6 months..

Not an issue.

As I've said before . . . I don't mind putting work into interesting cars . . . and when she's done nice . . she'll stay nice.

Oh, and there's no way I'm getting a rare-as-rocking-horse-sh!t ally manifold plated.

don't see much difference to polishing it myself, either way is permanantly altering the finish

But why plate ally ?

Ally wheels are fine . . . as soon as you start plating them you've opened a can of worms . . . .

I'd guess an inlet would be the same, albeit not as exposed to the elements . . .

chrome will come clean (and a lot brighter) with just a quick wipe, where as polished will need a couple of hours work quite frequently.....there is always a slight risk of warping the manifold when its plated, but it is only a small risk.. the PITA with re chroming wheels is not the chroming, but the chemical stripping of the old chrome..

just convinience really, depends how much work you want to put in keeping it shiny...

Any risk would be too much on that manifold.

Also, wouldn't the regular heat fluctuations cause problems with any sort of coating?

Absolutely.

If that manifold gets damaged there's no way I could find another !

Plus Street Rods of the day didn't have Chromed-up engine bays . . . just a subtle use of polished ally . . . and that's what I'm going for.

indeed it was nickel which has a nicer look in my opinion, if your gonna polish that manifold your gonna need plent of roloc's start with the red ones then work down in grade. Expect to pay about £30 a box and dont expect them to last long.

Thankfully it's one of the smoothest "rough" casts I've seen.

Compared to modern Edelbrock manifolds which are as rough as a bears ar$e.

in which case roloc pads would be ideal
