If the greens good you can use it as a base coat, but i would non-sand the whole car TBH just incase.

non-sand

technical term....?
there are a few fish eyes left in the paint, would it need a filler primer, could i do it....?
ive sprayed panels b4....(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)
Title: the dart so far
Post by: Rocky on October 29, 2007, 07:46:57 pm
Non-sand is a thinner coat,if you want to get out all the imperfections you need to do a high build coat (filler primer) then cut it back. Primer is easy to paint as it doesnt really matter if you make a mistake.

All depends mate, if your going with a solid color either but if your going pearl/candy/mica/metalic i would leave them on
Title: the dart so far
Post by: Rocky on October 29, 2007, 08:02:13 pm
Dont need a good gun for primer but i would recommend a gravity gun for thicker application, as for paint you get what you pay for, you can use upol high build primer which is cheaper and a good primer, but if you want a lasting finish i would use standox more expensive but you wont get the shrinkage over time. the best paint i have used is house of colour it paints much better and isnt alot more expensive and lasts. Only drawback is they dont do standard car colours

Rocky check out the paint with pearl a guy i know in the usa told me about it and he has been a custom painter for over 20 years, he switched because of the price of HOK there is also SEM who do concentrates that are equaly as good

Post by: Rocky on October 29, 2007, 08:10:09 pm
Yeah saw some at pomona looks ok, Think its a matter of trying it, i get HOK quite cheap so not too fussed but always good to have more options. Everything in UK is moving to water based or solvent free so getting good paints from here or Germany is becoming a pain. Got myself a new gun while i was out there half the price so cant wait to start using it.(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Yeah i know what you mean about waterbased, my mates shop is all water based now. I am going to order some of the paint with pearl and use it in the water based binder instead of intercoat clear. I know standox have some pretty cool water based custom colors now as i have the data sheet at work. Hope to buy my first gun in the next couple of months going for a devilbis gti pro (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Going to sell alot of mine as i have too many now trouble is i have a few binks guns from the 70's that are still better than alot of modern ones.

Its been on Yanks for years, its not hard to paint but you really need air dryers or leave it longer to dry,its also way more expensive.

waterbased isnt that difficult, it still has a solvent clear though. You might want to look for a high solid thats what i painted the BBQ with and coverage was amazing.

Its going to be a toss up between the devilbiss or a sata but i must admit i like the feel of the devilbiss but they aint cheap, MK paint quoted me £270 each as the gti pro are different for base and clear

Impressive how chris's has rusted in exactly the same places . . . albeit a little worse. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/down.gif)

Have you "cheated" there and welded a strip to the back of the new panel to help locate it on the old ? (third from last pic).

i cut a 1 inch strip and welded it to the rear of the new panel, as it has a curv in it it made location a lot easier,
ive welded it in the trunk to give it more strength, works a treat, and is unnoticable in the lower part of the trunk(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

T'is a good idea . . .

I've often considered welding up the Ma-hoosive gap between the inner and outer rear panels in Chris' Duster, aswell.
The gap there seems ridiculously large and most mopars I know of rot there when water runs in through the trunk/light seals and eventually ends up at the lowest point . . ie, there.

with the inner fenders and most of the flat metal work,
i cleaned it back with a wire wheel,   rust proofed it twice with granvile h/d rust cure,     gave it a coat of hammerite,
then used tetroseal underseal,    two coats of spray for the bits ya can see,
and two applications with a brush, underneath, one painted flat, the other weeks later, stippled on with a brush,

a good few hrs on a crawler trolly, thats why the car was nearly 3 foot of the ground...(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/shame.gif)

been there, the trick is getting the trim back on and not scuffing your new paint

make sure the clips are fitted before you paint coz its easy to slip pushing the buggers on

the problem is they were a bit slapdash applying the adhesive and you ended up with an uneven line with pooling areas for water to sit that then eats into the poor paint along the pinchweld and you have a leak

the front on my 68 was only held in with bath silicon and took about a minute to remove (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/down.gif)

I've had screen leaks on my '57 Hawk . . . That had wrap-around screen that used to hold water near the A-posts.  Obviously over time the rubbers rotted.

I'll be the first to admit I used Black Silicone on those.  The other option was to let it keep pouring in and rot the floor out and ruin the new carpet I'd just put in.

When you're on a budget and it's your daily car it's horses for courses . . . . I'd happily do it again without a second thought . . . . .

In fact I have done it since . . . The rear screen on the Z28 leaked like a bitch, filling up the trunk, and after speaking to Ryan concluded there was no way I could remove the lower section from the glass without risk of breaking the glass.

I eventually cleaned the area and added a thin bead of clear silicone between masks.
Looks subtle and I now have a dry trunk to look forward to over winter.

the silicon eats the rubber dean and means the screen will have to come out eventualy coz the leak will get bigger and bigger next time just squirt some screen bond in and around it costs the same per tube as bathroom sealer so you may as well use the proper stuff

removed the stripes and flatted the paint down with a combination of paper and scotchbrite pads(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Some £££ for the bus  transmission..
I've bought a 5 rib that's having a refurb and longer gears fitted,
it will be better than a 6 rib,
The scooby adaptor kit..

Then I will bang 5k into an isa..

i have a guy from vzi,
who is doing a strip down and refurb on the cheap 5 rib i bought,
and upgrading the gearing ratios by 10%
hes a lot cheaper than the likes of cogbox, and will probably do a better job..

Mustang gets sold only when a replacement had been found...or she breaks beyond economic repair 😉
