For many years I've rated Johnny Cash as a Hero.

A true hero and a giant among men with something to say.

His Death in 2003 was a very sad day for me . . . I suppose like the death of Elvis would have been had I been alive in '77.

I couldn't begin to describe the respect I have for this man and his memory and was very sceptical when I found out there was to be a film of his life.

. . . I saw a documentary on the film a night or two ago and I am now looking forward to "Walk the Line" more than any film before it.

Blurb:

"In 1955, a tough, skinny guitar-slinger who called himself J.R. Cash walked into the soon-to-be-famous Sun Studios in Memphis. It was a moment that would have an indelible effect on American culture. With his driving freight-train chords, steel-eyed intensity and a voice as deep and black as night, Cash sang blistering songs of heartache and survival that were gutsy, full of real life and unlike anything heard before.

That day kicked off the electrifying early career of Johnny Cash . . . . . "

Let's hope it does Johnny and June proud.

I started work in 1976 & I thought like a lot of young people at the time he was a useless old git

I've come to realise his earlier acheivements , but he was no James Dean !
Funny I've always thought of myself as too young to like Elvis ?

Hysteria ?

Hardly.  Beatles and Hysteria, yeah, O.K. but I couldn't think of a more inappropriate word to discribe 50 years of music. (Yes he was writing up until the end)

If THAT is hysteria what the Fuck do you call the Famous-for-5-seconds-shite which (briefly) do so well thesedays?

Oh dear.

And that's from a man who wears pink and listens to Hanson.

Sorry, PhilO.  He may have not been the most gifted singer but he sure as fuck was near the top of the pile for song writing abilities.

My respect for him comes from his power to have beaten down his own demons . . . . something Rock/Pop stars thesedays fail miserably  to do even with professional counselling/re-hab.

Also for doing the opposite that was expected of him and while doing so staying true to his own beliefs.

Oh Man,
Coincidence or what
me & Matt were just talking about this tonight in Wetherspoons he was saying that he really wants to see it.

I have to say I don't know any of his songs off hand but on hearing them i probably would...  needless to say we'll be seeing this I reckon.

My writing on the original post said nothing about the songs.

His life / loves and loses made him the man he was . . . . . the songs were just storys.

"The Ballad of Ira Hayes" is a much better example of his work telling of a native Indian man who fights for "his" country then gets forgotten when the war is over, only to die alone and drunk.

"Ring of Fire" is a great song . . . not much of a story there, but very catchy (obviously) all the same.

The "walk the line" website covers (some) of the Artists who have been affected by his work and who have covered his songs . . . Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crow to name a few.

His life was pretty much finished when his long-term partner and wife June Carter (Cash) died . . . . Johnny himself survived only a few months more.

He had a great album a couple of years back called "man in black" all cover versions of modern songs, his version of U2 was awesome.

To say you only ever heard one cash song is pretty poor philo. You must of heard of a 'boy named sue'

Im with dean on this one a legend in a life time

O.K myself and Sammy-Lou are seeing this on Tuesday night . . . .

I'm aiming to see a showing around 9.00pm.

If anyone is interested (and that is read interested ) we could meet up beforehand in the Moon for a couple of Beers, say around 7.00-7.30pm.
