Title: Roadkill Winery Co. (THE WINE THREAD)
Post by: Roadkill on August 21, 2013, 02:49:52 pm
Wasn't too fussed about doing my own wine but when Sammy came home with a kit to make 6 bottles of Chardonnay I couldn't complain !

She then bought home 6 bottles, a pack of corks and a corker (all free on product testing !!)

The kit came with extra steriliser and sugar which was helpful, too - I'm getting quite a stockpile, now.

Wine should be ready for Brighton but i do need to donate 2 bottles to Sammy's boss. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rolleyes.gif)

Yeah. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Second stage of the wine making is tonight (topping up the demijohn). (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Then another week (ish) 'til bottling.

Dunno.  I put it in the Caddy's trunk and to be honest have completely forgotten about it until now.  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rofls.gif)

I think it's been in the dark, now, for about 6 days . . . ???

I'll have a quick look tonight but I'm guessing it should be ready for bottling Friday / Saturday.

I had a look.  It's pretty darn clear so I moved it (carefully) into a position where I can syphon it.

Plan to bottle it tonight. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

WINE !

Have to let one bottle go to Sammy's boss but will have 5 for Brighton . . . . hopefully. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

It's Medium-Dry, based on the bit I sampled.

Certainly tasted O.K. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

I could've put half a cup more water in the Demijohn to make 6 FULL bottles but can't complain.

just like jesus....(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

fyi
if you intend to keep wine for any time...[i suspect these wont be..(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)]

then fill the bottles to within an inch of the top to reduce the amount of nasty bacteria filled air in the bottle..(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

Well, after saying I wasn't too fussed about making wine . . Sammy bought home another kit for some Strawberry wine (plus some more steriliser and sugar) . . all for free.

So there's another batch on the go !

Had to turn the heating on, though, as the temperature in the house dropped to 19*C which basically halted the fermentation !

hmm yeah I may have to go down the aquarium heater route as our heating gets set to 18*C (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

Beer's not too bad at 18-24*C but wine should be 25*C !

I checked on it this morning and it's certainly perked up a bit . . . the house was 21*C when I left this morning . . . .

my fermenting cabinet is gonna be essential soon as temps will plummet at night in winter,

you can use a large builders bucket,
with water in it and an aquarium heater in it to control the temp (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

Not sure - it was a Munton's-for-Lakeland's one Sammy brought home.  A Chardonnay.

that would make sense (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)
as muntons make most of the homebrew kits in the uk

 a very nice wine for around 1.50 a bottle...(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/cool.gif)
