Connecting to Broadband - Help required !
« on: December 10, 2007, 11:37:23 am »
O.K, I'll shorten this as much as poss . .

My Dad has recently subscribed to BT broadband . . and recently brought a new wireless router.  (originally set up for talk-talk).

I plugged everything in O.K - put the CD in and followed the instructions, installed software for the (USB) wireless plug-in thingy, then the software for the router.

All O.K, gets to the last stage where it asks for username and password . . . . .

Now, I put in what it said on BT's letter to my Dad . . no go . . . double-checked and did it again, still wouldn't connect.

Read the BT manual - here it said use @btbroadband .com not @btinternet .com . . . so I tried this . . . . it also mention that you don't need a password.

So at this point I try multiple combos of usernames and passwords / no passwords . . .

Still says it's not connecting.

By chance I click on the IE icon (out of morbid curiousity) and low and behold it connects.

I don't know how but needless to say the first site I type in is MKB ().

Cool, dunno what I did but it's sorted.

I then restart the PC in order for it to recognise the printer (which needs drivers downloading).

It restarts normally but now is unable to establish a connection.

I try everything I can think of including uninstalling all the software and starting from scratch . . . only this time I can't even get to installing the router software part as it can't connect to it (although it says it can see it and says it has a 58% signal strength).

I restart the router (power off / on) but still doesn't want to know.

Sidenote :

During the first install I had Nortons installed and on . . . it kept bugging me so I later disabled it . . . .

Doubt that has anything to do with it, but . . . .

In my experience your problem is highlighted in your second paragraph....'BT broadband '

BT have attained a level of ineptitude that is beyond the equal of all but the most appalling of corporate bodies. It is equalled only by their total disregard for customer satisfaction and their greed for whatever funds you may have left in your account each month after paying for their non existent service.

Need to see it really.  Too many variables

The most unpredictable of which is your involvement.

What time can you be there (I finish at 6pm) and I'll let the parental units know.

Or I can pick you up from CR #2 . . .
