ive got a western digital my book essentials, it works fine, I'd get one double the size of your internal drive to allow for expansion.  I got mine from PC world, was cheap enough :)

I will always give thumbs up to Seagate drives. I have a little 500gb Passport one, all my photos are backed up on that and then further to a 1TB seagate.

To use Time Machine I'd suggest a drive that is at least 50% larger than the one inside your MacBook.

As for physical size, the 2.5" ones would be powered from the laptop itself via USB, whereas a 3.5" "desktop" one would need to use a power adapter.

If you may be away form home and still want to use Time Machine a portable 2.5" based drive would be the best option although a lot more money per Gb than a larger desk based one.

Ditto 500gb which was about £70

Go for one like the WD which doesn't have an external power supply, it just plugs into the USB

And how do I know how big my Mac memory is?

Click on the "Macintosh HD" icon on the desktop.

Hold down the Command (apple) key and press the I key.

So you have a 120GB drive.
Anything from 160GB and upwards will be fine for Time Machine use but to be honest I'd buy at least a 250GB.

Or top-left, click  the Apple, then 'about this Mac'
