Alt Wiring + inline fuse
« on: June 05, 2006, 08:41:55 am »
Managed to fit the alternator yesterday (eventually), but it's only half the job.

The stock set-up routes both of the +ve outputs from the alt to a junction block, then to the starter solenod via a fusible link.

I want to replace the  fusible link with a fuse.  For now, I have routed the main output through a Maxi fuse direct to the starter post. (Leaving the other output through the exisiting set-up - this will be replaced/routed through the fuse as well)

My question is, what size fuse should it be?

Whats the fuse for?
Starters don't normally have a fuse and the main loom is all fused independantly.

The only way to work out what fuse would be needed is to calculate it

You would need to know the wattage of the starter motor then divide it by 13.3

As far as I know, it's not for the starter, but the 'main' fusibile link for the whole car.

The starter still has the direct, unfused link to the battery.

I think your making life dificult for yourself mate, i would leave the original fused link in place or order a replacment one up and swap it out

I'm trying to make life easier.

The 2 power wires from the alt join at a junction block, hidden somewhere at the back of the engine block.  There's a fusible link between them and the starter.  As I want to replace both, and re-route them, it seemed sensible to put in a fuse (easier to replace).

When you operate the starter the current is switched through the solenoid direct from the battery , hence the fuseable link.
Would doubt that you will get a fuse big enough to handle the power ?
But electrickery is not my best field

The fusible link is between the alt and the starter. When starting, the alt won't be pumping out any power, so I don't know why it's there.
