I'm now commuting into London for work in heavy traffic so it'll be interesting to see just how bad it gets doing that.

Not walking down the street now, how comes?

Glad the Wrangler has worked out for you
Can't help but feel for the commute you may be better getting something more 'practical'?

I got a 6 month contract in the Docklands which pays such good money I had little option but to hand my notice in at the ski/quad/motorbike dealers.  Shame as I *really* enjoyed working there but the money wasn't great although there was potential there if I could really get their online/mailorder business going well (which it was just starting to).  But even with that the pay would likely never get to what I was offered on this contract so...  But I left on very good terms and I've been told that there is always a position there for me if I want it which is good as contract work is unpredictable at best...

As for the commute in the Wrangler, to be honest it does't bother me as it's only 8 miles each way and while the fuel economy is tragic 2 tanks a month works out about the same as a monthly tube pass anyway.  I could save money on fuel by buying another car just for work (no way would I sell the Jeep) but that requires another lot of tax, insurance and so on.  It would probably break even over 12 months but I'd have to buy the car in the first place.  Although the Jeep ride quality is horrible and so on, I don't mind it and don't mind doing even really long journeys in it...

Ah the JK Unlimited?
Very nice.  Too big for me but a lot more civilised and practical.
The Rubicon edition of that was voted the best 4x4 of the past decade...

That Alpine unit is great. As you say fully functioning with the iPhone and iPod  and the Bluetooth handsfree is ace. Have the mic running above the headliner and dropping out inbetween my two sunvisors. Only problem I have is the wiring. I know I don't have the constant 12v line hooked up right as after about two days of not being started the radio presets go

Well this weekend saw the new suspension system being fitted to the Jeep.

Only a small lift (2") as it's a daily driver and there's too much to change if you go high, but it's a top quality Old Man Emu kit from ARB in Australia.  The ride quality is much better, hitting potholes or speed bumps is a much "softer" experience now and smooth roads are actually smooth whereas before you even felt the grain of the tarmac up your spine...

As I plan on fitting strong metal bumpers and a winch and so on in the future I went with the heavy duty springs.

The kit included 4 shocks, 4 springs, a transfer case lowering kit (otherwise you get driveline vibration as all the angles would be on the p!$$), a rear panhard bar relocation bracket, bump stop spacers plus all new poly bushes, spring isolators and stainless fittings.

I'm well pleased as the bigger wheels filled the stock arches too much and made it look like it was lowered, which is not a look I like on 44x's...

Got a couple of vids of the Jeep off-road so thought I'd post them in this thread...

I've been spending more money on it but I'll wait until the 1 year anniversary to go through it as I intend to buy a couple more things by then.

The Jeep just walks over any obstacle off-road, the short wheel base, good tyres and the solid axles which articulate far better than independent suspension (even more so now I have lifted it) mean you'd be hard pressed to find a better (real) 4x4 imho.  I'm a novice at this stuff but even with me at the wheel it's amazing what it can do, just point it where you want to go and it will get you there!

whiplash pays around £2k,

where theres blame theres a claim

and it can come on days after the event.

should cover the cost of a few mods to the jeep

no, the insurance companies customers pay 2k. people that fraudulently claim for things like that deserve to be taken out back and given a damned good kicking.....

its those sort of plebs that keep our insurance premiums high..

so fooking true philleep, so true...

insurance prices have HUGELY increase since the advent of fuking personal injury adverts in between episodes of Jeremy Kyle...

It's ridiculous, i mean, fine, if you have whiplash or a broken bone or whatever, and it stops you working, as a contractor you should claim, just for your lost days work, BUT if you're off work sick, being paid, why claim, £2k doesnt some how magically fix a broken arm!!

It infuriates me to my very core that these fucing ambulance chasing claim nazi's think its ok to claim for a slit finger nail they got 3 weeks after a car crash that their mum had with a tree....  to me its EXACTLY the same as benefit fraud and deserves a shocking penalty....

probably death by firing squad..... using spud cannons..... it would take a while, but with enough determination, you could get the job done....

dont even get me started on these coc*knockers that claim for 'stress' as part of an accident claim... ffs.... get over it...

the girl who ran in to the back of you is screwed insurance wise anyway, what goes around etc....

imagine if you had a tiny accident, and you were to blame, say you pulled out of a turning in to the side of someone... years ago, you'd phone your insurance co come renewal time, tell them about it, give them the total cost which might have been a couple of grand at most, if youd written off both your sierra and the other guys car.... now you have to tell them about the accident and tell them that it's cost you £469,000 becuase the other party claimed a sum of money for every single hair on their head that got frightened, £20k for the other sides solicitors fees, because remeber, they got 100% of the compensation, so you have to pay the costs on top.... oh, and they had a hire car, which was a bently obviously, cos thats the same as the astra they were driving which you took a £50k wing mirror off because the repair companies analy REAM insurance co's

so, all in all, these cok juggling claim cu*ts have directly put MY insurance payments up.... same as the benefit cheats are taking MY tax money....

I should really write a book...... people would buy it......

anyway, i digress, back on topic.... glad the jeep and you are both ok....
