Title: "LAN" over the Internet ?
Post by: Roadkill on February 20, 2007, 06:21:50 pm
I know we've just had a LAN but I've got the urge to play BF2 again.

I played some single player games last night but it wasn't the same. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/sad.gif)

I did consider going online to play but haven't got a clue how to and am likely to get pwned big time. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/sad.gif)

Is it possible to set up a game over the internet which is limited to small numbers of peeps ?
And is restricted to certain players ?

Yes it is you just need someone to make the server and set the restrictions or easier a Password.
Then anyone who has the password can enter the game.

I play BF2142 dont have BF2(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/sad.gif)

I'd be up for that (a private match that is, not just any random server)

As long as the host has a quick connection its just a case of making gate 21 from memory open on the router.

I have my mac mini set up as an FTP so i can connect into it from any where in the world

I think the router port varies from game to game.  21 is ftp, so it wouldn't be that for games.

Just thinking that with the new server you guys might be able to use that as we have loads of bandwidth. Ian would know more

Yes, but you can't run programs on it.  You need a game server to be running.  You can get servers to do such a thing, but they are more expensive, and probably beyond what we would want to pay for it.

servers are pricey,

if someone here has a fast enough connection and (on a secure forum) posts the IP and password thats all you need to do to connect up.

What you need is some one who works where there would be a super fast connection say a college (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/devil.gif)

I don't have time to install a server with an OS, patch it, configure it, install the game and so on, otherwise I would.

Lol, (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/newb.gif)

It should be possible to run a BF2 server from any of our connections. With only a few players it should be fine.
I'm definitely up for it. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/beavisnbutthead.gif)

I'm thinking as a stop-gap between LANs it could be cool.

Maybe a couple of hours one evening or a few hours one weekend evening.

thing is, there is probably enough empty bf2 servers for you to jump on, and i'm pretty sure you wouldn't be disturbed by anyone else, even if they did, it would be more for you to kill (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Ok, I have a working 1.41 server set up. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

I'm not sure whether I'll be able to run it 24x7 yet - depends how noticeable it is. Even if I can't, I can definitely set it going whenever necessary.

I would suggest a weekday evening, from 8pm, we tend to be busy weekends, especially in the summer.

that way we could set a day each month / fortnight / week (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif) and make it something regular.   and Free!

tbh, you should unpassword it until such times as you have actually got an organised game, as you may be able to get random n00bs on it to pwn ( and it would save being empty 99% of the time)

I'd like to see what effect it has on the server box before I do this.
It's stayed up and running so far which is good, although it's not doing a great deal.
Have to see what happens on Wednesday when we start using it properly and then take it from there.
