Yup.

The Chav'scort is still alive and well.

I did have a thorough search for replacements and phoned round alot . .
I admit that, in the end, I didn't have quite as much to put towards a new car as i'd hoped but still . . . all the cars I enquired about were DOGS !

I phoned up about 8 or 9 . . . and they were all over-priced, high mileage heaps.

Most looked pretty but didn't give me any confidence in their reliability. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/sad.gif)

I average nearly 2000 miles a month and as much as I hate to admit it - the Chav'scort has been basically faultless, ignoring only relatively minor issues.

And still with no oil change in over 40,000 miles. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/shame.gif)

So.

She's re-insured for another 10 months . . . tax is due in 2 months.

There's some issues that need sorting . . . . . .

Major issue 1 - She needs two front tyres.

Both are now showing extensive amounts of white thread . . . this is even starting to bother the hardcore redneck inside.

Got a quote from tyres direct (you guys rock) for two new budget tyres.

£25 each, including valves and fitting/balancing.  So, £50.

Major issue 2 - Bodged exhaust pipe is blowing like a b!tch.

It's noisy.  Very noisy.  Or was.

On the drive home yesterday I decided enough was enough.  I got home, slid the trolley jack underneath and jacked that b!tch way up to further bodge the exhaust into submission.

Now, I did look on eBay for exhausts . . . Mid section was about £31+£14 delivery and a back box was £25+£14 delivery.

But I decided that I could go cheaper with 6 self-drilling teks, half a pot of fibreglass and a bit of wire wool.

Basically, I ran three teks into the rear section of exhaust and into the loose section I'd rammed in while on holiday . . then, to hold the two parts together, ran another three into the pipe section after the cat.

Hey presto - a solid connection.

To further reduce the blowing I then scrubbed the area with wire wool, applied and heavy coat of fibreglass then wrapped some clean wire wool around that (to act as matting) and then applied another two heavy coats of 'glass.

Total outlay - about £4 of stuff I already had. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Minor issue 1 - Steering wheel.

O.K, not as petty as you may think . . . the cars done over 150000 miles so the steering wheel is all dried up and brittle . . . it's powdery and if you rub against it it leaves dusty white marks over you.

How did I fix this ? - Easy - Insulation tape . . . well, about half a roll of it tightly wrapped around the effected portion of the steering wheel.

Now it's smooth and no more marks left on me. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Total outlay - half of a 49p roll of tape . . . and about 4 minutes. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Minor issue 2 - Lack of servicing.

Yeah, as mentioned she hasn't had an oil change in years . . . So (as I got a new filter with the car any way) I plan to (shock, horror) give her a fresh lot of el cheapo oil and a new free filter . . . . . . . at some point . . . . .

Oh, and after "fixing" the blow in the exhaust pipe I noticed that the N/S/R wheel bearing is now utterly toast !

I agree.

And in all reality the Chavscort needs the minimum of spending on it to keep it going.  An oil change even with cheap oil and a noname filter for under 15 quid all in once a year is a financial sensiblr way to go.
Just buy the cheapest parts possible and keep it going.

Beats spending hundreds on a replacement which may require equal spending anyway.

Yeah . . the worst one gave up.

Ironic, really, as it was on my list to go to get two new ones for the front today . . . I started work early to get away to site (and to detour to the tyre fitters . . . )

Alas, after 2 hours of solid work AutoCAD crashed hard, leaving me to do it all again . . . .

I never got to site and never got my new tyres . . . It gave up on leaving work.

Hmm...

As amusing as it is, in reality you stand no chance of stopping that bad boy quickly in the wet and that means you're putting your life and anyone else in the cars life at risk.  If you were to injure someone you care about you'd sih you'd coughed up for what is the v cheap basics of maintenance.

The same goes for whoever you run into the back of...

I stand more chance of stopping my car then many do with brand new tyres but driving like an idiot.

The car's not perfect, true, but I don't generally speed (if at all) and I don't tailgate.

In poor conditions I take it even easier.

After having them off the car I admit the tyres were worse then I'd first thought . . .

People as a whole rely way too much on technology . . . expensive tyres, huge multi-pot brakes, ABS, traction control . . .

It all means $hit all if you can't drive.

I'm used to driving older cars . . . a slight lack of saftey goes with the territory.

Not tailgating and so on is just as important as tyres and stuff, but still, in the wet the tyre simply cannot channel the water out the way, you're travelling on top of it.  Physics is physics no matter whether you're Joe Blogs or Schumacher.

I used to change my tyres when they pretyt much hit the mininimum 1.6mm, but having watched a program on tv where they tried stopping 2 identical cars in the wet, one with a legal 1.6mm of tread and one with their recommended 3mm of tread (8mm of tread is a new tyre I think (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif) ) I won't knowingly be letting them get that low again even though they're legal.  The car on the 1.6mm of tread took a *lot* longer to stop than the one with 3mm.  Scarily so.


Anyway, you now have new tyres so it's not an issue.

Speaking of which, the IROC needs new rear tyres, they're right down to the limit so apart from N London meets in the dry, it isn't going anywhere.


As for the brake pads, I'd change them.  1mm means it will stop ok if you don't lean on them but letting them go down to metal is just gonna ruin the disks anyway and you're doing this on a budget right?

So.

Friday -

It had two new front tyres - £50

Saturday -

Oil change and filter change - £8
Brought N/S/R wheel bearing - £10
Topped up coolant/anti freeze - £2
Topped up washer fluid - £1

Monday -

Brought 30mm Socket - £5
Attempted to fit wheel bearing - failed due to hub nut being over tightened.

Then the rear exhaust box fell off.

Tuesday -

Got bearing fitted - £20
Got price for back box and in a moment of weakness  . . .
Brought back box - £25

Need to fit back box . . . .

Busy and expensive (£121) few days.

I have no intention of replacing the front pads until they're cooked.

If the discs are damaged so be it . . . It just means the pads will bed to a different shape.

EDIT - not that I have time for brake-changing anyway . . . I'm in Walsall tomorrow, Wakefield & London Thursday and london (possibly) on friday too.

The b!tch needs to earn her keep for a bit . . .
