Yup.

The Chav'scort is still alive ~~and well~~.

I did have a thorough search for replacements and phoned round alot . .
I admit that, in the end, I didn't have quite as much to put towards a new car as i'd hoped but still . . . all the cars I enquired about were DOGS !

I phoned up about 8 or 9 . . . and they were all over-priced, high mileage heaps.

Most looked pretty but didn't give me any confidence in their reliability.

I average nearly 2000 miles a month and as much as I hate to admit it - the Chav'scort has been basically faultless, ignoring only relatively minor issues.

And still with no oil change in over 40,000 miles.

So.

She's re-insured for another 10 months . . . tax is due in 2 months.

There's some issues that need sorting . . . . . .

Major issue 1 - She needs two front tyres.

Both are now showing extensive amounts of white thread . . . this is even starting to bother the hardcore redneck inside.

Got a quote from tyres direct (you guys rock) for two new budget tyres.

£25 each, including valves and fitting/balancing. So, £50.

I'll try and take her in today.

Major issue 2 - Bodged exhaust pipe is blowing like a b!tch.

It's noisy. Very noisy. Or was.

On the drive home yesterday I decided enough was enough. I got home, slid the trolley jack underneath and jacked that b!tch way up to further bodge the exhaust into submission.

Now, I did look on eBay for exhausts . . . Mid section was about £31+£14 delivery and a back box was £25+£14 delivery.

But I decided that I could go cheaper with 6 self-drilling teks, half a pot of fibreglass and a bit of wire wool.

Basically, I ran three teks into the rear section of exhaust and into the loose section I'd rammed in while on holiday . . then, to hold the two parts together, ran another three into the pipe section after the cat.

Hey presto - a solid connection.

To further reduce the blowing I then scrubbed the area with wire wool, applied and heavy coat of fibreglass then wrapped some clean wire wool around that (to act as matting) and then applied another two heavy coats of 'glass.

It's not tidy but, hell, it's whisper quiet.

Total outlay - about £4 of stuff I already had.

Minor issue 1 - Steering wheel.

O.K, not as petty as you may think . . . the cars done over 150000 miles so the steering wheel is all dried up and brittle . . . it's powdery and if you rub against it it leaves dusty white marks over you.

Not good when you wear black jeans and dark shirts for work.

How did I fix this ? - Easy - Insulation tape . . . well, about half a roll of it tightly wrapped around the effected portion of the steering wheel.

Now it's smooth and no more marks left on me.

Total outlay - half of a 49p roll of tape . . . and about 4 minutes.

Minor issue 2 - Lack of servicing.

Yeah, as mentioned she hasn't had an oil change in years . . . So (as I got a new filter with the car any way) I plan to (shock, horror) give her a fresh lot of el cheapo oil and a new free filter . . . . . . . at some point . . . . .

I ain't spending more than £10 on oil, though !

Oh, and after "fixing" the blow in the exhaust pipe I noticed that the N/S/R wheel bearing is now utterly toast !

Or that's what it sounds like . . . .

Theres alot of turd out there for alot of money.. I remember looking at a 89 Audi diesel with 230k on the clock.. it was a fecking pile!!!

The guy still wanted 600 for it...

i stand by my origional comment.. for sub £1000 transportation a decent escort is pretty much impossible to beat..

I agree.

And in all reality the Chavscort needs the minimum of spending on it to keep it going. An oil change even with cheap oil and a noname filter for under 15 quid all in once a year is a financial sensiblr way to go.
Just buy the cheapest parts possible and keep it going.

Beats spending hundreds on a replacement which may require equal spending anyway.

Yeah . . the worst one gave up.

Ironic, really, as it was on my list to go to get two new ones for the front today . . . I started work early to get away to site (and to detour to the tyre fitters . . . )

Alas, after 2 hours of solid work AutoCAD crashed hard, leaving me to do it all again . . . .

I never got to site and never got my new tyres . . . It gave up on leaving work.

Could be worse . . . the noise made me first think that the bottom end of the motor had dumped out . . . then I realised that it was just the rim mashing over the bumps in the road.

I'd like to point out that the shiny bits just left of my hand and in the middle of the picture is actually the tyres' steel belt showing through !

The tyre was sooo thin I could've pushed my finger through it If I'd tried hard enough.

But.

I now have two budget "Runway" tyres on the front - £25 each.

She drives like she's on rails, now . . . .
