Title: pc help
Post by: art b on December 31, 2009, 02:41:18 PM
im having a bit of greif with the sons pc, its been standing for a while[prob not relevant]

when its switched on the psu fan runs, and the cooling fan on the chips runs, a green led on the mother board stays alight [see pic] BUT then the whole thing shuts down,....(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/down.gif)

the hard drive can be heard to spin up to speed,[ive held it to my ear]
then there is a small click within it which may be causing the pc to stop[may not be ]
the whole thing only runs for around 25 seconds...(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

could it be hard drive failure,
could the drive be fitted to another machine....? it has a few hundred songs and pics on it.(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/smirk.gif)

Yep, however, the machine is quite old and has a IDE harddrive judging by the cable attached to it which means it will only be read either by an equally old machine OR a modern rig (which runs SATA) with a good motherboard - the main drive will be SATA but the good motherboard will have an IDE connection where you can just plug in the drive. It will just appear as a new harddisk under 'My Computer'.

Doing this will elimnate the harddrive from the equation..

It may be faulty memory, try taking out one stick after the other (looks like all four slots are used). - Another thing eliminated..

Next could be the CPU fan has come loose - when you first turn on your rig, any rig, you will hear a burst of fan speed for 2 seconds, then it will return to normal running - usually right around the time of the 'check beep'. This is actually the system purposly sending informaiton to the CPU to heat it up to check if the fan is opertating normally. If the fan is not connected properly (even if one prong is out) the CPU will over heat and the Motherboard will shut it down to prevent damage. Check and elimanate.

Next could be a faulty motherboard - just buy a new rig and plug the old harddisk in as a second harddisk to access as extra storage and to recover old useful porn files.

Couple of things there for you..

The BIOS beep is when it reaches the memory isn't it Edge?

So looks like the check isn't getting to the memory at all - I would put money on CPU (either fecked or fan not secured properly / inoperable) or Motherboard now..

Is it securely connected ontop of the CPU? Try to wriggle it about - if it moves it's no good..

it all clamps together quite well.....(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

So the checksum is at ram and has already gone through CPU..

That glue was heat-paste which has probably dryed..

Guess it's down to mobo...  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

ok if no bios beeps with memory in indicates EITHER a motherboard problem or a grphaics card problem IF its an adapter card (which it doesn't look like it is...) so i'd go for some form of mobo problem,...

the pc is running fine banged a few up dates on it,

it dosn't have a beep when booting up,
but it does have the 2 speed fan thing now it running.
gonna give it a clean out with an airline around the fans heatsink and psu as its clogged with dust,
and save all the porn to another machine.....(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Good call, accumulation of dust will negate the benefits of heat sinks..  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Just waiting for my iphone to arrive now - had to buy 2nd hand as I can't upgrade until December 10 - it will hopefully do until then (assuming it turns up and I haven't been done!)
