Picked up my new daily on Sunday -

2005 TDCi Diesel Estate (130Bhp) 6-speed. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/drive.gif)

Near-perfect condition inside and out - fairly high miles but full service history.

Just took her out for a spin - and am very happy.  Or as happy as I can be with a Mondeo.  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Pics to follow this weekend . . . .

This now brings my current car-total to Four - it's been a while since I've had that many motors sitting around the place !! (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/lol.gif)

Missed the six speed bit, sweet as! The 130bhp motor with that box = happy days!

This is rather turning into a Mondeo owners club though, me, CP, Fieldy, Ian and now RK. Anyone else want to admit they have one?

I don't really care about speed (hence not bothered about ST version).

Now, space economy, reliability and pulling power really get me off :jackoff:

Mondeos are a very competent, but a very dull car (i've driven all bar the MK4).. doesn't mean its a bad car, far from it, they drive very well, they are just very bland.  In the market sector they are in, that's to be expected though - a car a keen driver would find exciting would probably be considered twitchy and nervy to the average person.

the best variant I've driven is the TDCi - good compromise between performance and economy, and very smooth for a diesel. the most disappointing was a MK2 ST 24 - just not really as quick as it should be..

In fairness to the Mondeo I've only recently driven two other "modern" cars (Parent's '08 Astra and PhilO's Alfa) and I'm happy to say that the Mondy is just as inspiring to drive as either of them.

The Astra is easy and light to drive but offers no excitement.  The Alfa is quite "barge-like" in corners considering it's not actually that large, although it goes well.  The mondy is a fairly large car (actually quite large) but handles reasonably (even better with air in the front tyres !!) and can out-pull most things on the road once rolling in second, I've found.  Add to that that it coasts along at 1700 rpm @ 70mph in Sixth gear and it'll p!ss all over both previously mentioned cars when it comes to economy, capacity and practicality.

I'm impressed, I must say, and I was sceptical at first.

Anyway - here she is :

£1900 with 4 months MoT, 10+ months tax and about £40 of fuel in her !!!  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

 . . . . . And, yes, she could do with a clean !

Absolute bargain for a "base-model" car in such good condition with A/C and Cruise Control.

Edit :

Everything works as well.  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Nice man! Is that just A/C or is it Climate control too?

For an LX that's pretty well spec'd. You've got the two things that most people would want on the higher cars but on the base. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Just out of curiosity, what tyres have you got fitted on yours Fieldy? Mines got Avons all round and the front end is a little lively in the wet. Starting to suspect the tyres are shite.

Ha Ha, seriously no idea.
I fitted a set of cheap 15" wheels from Gumtree with tyres for £50.
I fitted one budget tyre from the scrap yard.

Lets put it this way, I was driving on the M4 today, 75MPH (Roughly, my speedo is about 15mph out at that speed), floor was damp and my traction control started working..... (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/confused.gif)
Title: I'm a MONDEO MAN, now !!!
Post by: Andy on February 26, 2011, 10:39:44 pm
Haha, wish I had traction control...

Theres a back road round here, where there's a slight hump back bridge on a bend, nothing tragic. Went over that a bit enthusiastically and the near side lost grip and the right side dragged the steering round. This is making me want to put the Bridgestones I have on the diesel on and do away with the Avons.

I have a damp floor... inside (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/sad.gif)

The Mondeo, Focus and Fiesta have always sold well as they're damn good cars.

Dependable, and while sometimes uninspiring to look at, a very good drive indeed, always winning group tests against the competition for the driving experience.  Suspension and steering are spot on, nice gearbox and driving position etc.  And the latest models are generating reviews tat say the build quality is no longer just behind the Germans, it's actually equal or even better...

Ford have sold millions of these things for good reason.

The R&D budget for the suspension tuning division is probably greater than an entire vehicle development budget for some of their competitors...

I remember when the first Mondeo came out, Ford spent over 4 *billion* developing it.  And that's back in the v early 90s when 4 billion was a f*** ton of money...

that market sector is so critical, ford had to get the mondeo right. the vectra is just not on the same game, but how many 05 modeos do you see against 05 vectras! ford were outselling the vectra significantly.

the focus I felt (and i have heard others say the same) was always over rated, the 2009 LX I drove last year was falling apart, and in non wearing places too, such as trims on the dash board (itself a very nasty hard cheap plastic) and the trims around the door handles being loose, because they were about 3mm smaller than the opening they 'fitted' into. the 1.8 TDCi was horrible and laggy and the gear ratios poorly chosen. not at all nice.

The tables have turned in the slightly smaller focus sector, and THE car to buy is the Kia C'eed, as good or superior in every way to the focus, with a far better warranty, and cheaper.

the Germans have always managed to sell on badge, but the 3 series is again a relatively decent car, until you see the price. the Merc C class looks superb, but apparently the build quality isn't great. cirtainly the older once i've been in were not as good as you'd like.

Really the only alternative you can really pick against the mondeo is the Volvo V40 / S40 or the Saab 9-3

The Kia Cee'd is a good car by all accounts, looks like a Toyota to me.
It drives pretty well too, but it's not on par with a Focus.

But considering it's a Kia it's amazing how far they've come, and in such a short time...

As an everyday runaround, given the cost of a new focus these days (near 20k for a 1.8TDCI Zetec, sod off) I'd give the Kia serious consideration.

Then again Vauxhall offer a good warranty now, although the Astra I rented was nicer to look at than the current Focus (on it's way out and an all new one due any minute, which is truly excellent from what I've read) both inside as well as out, and it was quiet and smooth, however it was not as nice to drive.  The gearbox was awful and the steering lifeless.

With improved looks, quality and a great driving experience, the new Focus should be good.  It better be for what they want for one...

the 09 focus I drove tail end of last year was absolutely awful (dad hated it too), buy comparison his Pug 307 was light years nicer when we got home, smoother, quieter better built and a FAR bigger boot). A guy at work also had a 1.8 TDCI focus from new as a company car (now changed for a BMW118d) and he hated it too, for all the same reasons - nasty engine cheap plastics and very poor build.

its substantially worse than the MK1 focus, the cost cutters had obviously been at work.

the mondeo is much nicer.

Some stats for you Merry Mondeo Men . . . .

First full tank (mainly short runs but some longer trips)

Tank = 513.3 miles / 55.19 litre (12.14 gal) = 42.3MPG

Second full tank (pretty much half and half)

Tank = 590.7 miles / 56.56 litre (12.44 gal) = 47.5MPG

Just at the end of my third tank and I'm hoping to get to 50MPG. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

Where you'll see the real advantage is motorway cruising with the 6th gear, 70 with probably a little over 2.5k rpm, happy days!

I am missing my old diesel mondeo and the mpg I got out of it. It was never amazing but at least I wasnt getting to know the petrol attendants name.

Change at 1500, keep off the boost, you should get well over 50mpg (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/cool.gif)

Sure, you can hit 60 or 70 when the road allows, but just don't be the first on the road to do it, gradually increase speed - makes a huuuggeee difference. It may feel like you are driving too slowly, but you soon catch all the people up who tank past you away from round-a-bouts at full-throttle, the next slow bit of traffic you can just glide past them.

My 1.8 petrol is doing 40-42mpg (A roads, 40-60mph - so admittedly the best situation to get high MPG with the engine), but still, '97 petrol estate (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/cool.gif)

Also, tyres at 33psi (massive difference as you know).

My dad drives everywhere at 60 and accelerates gently and plans ahead.
He gets 64mpg at the *lowest* out of his Focus TDCi and gets up to 72mpg with a tailwind and on a longer run...  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

He just went for a test drive in the new shape Focus 1.6TDCi which has a 6 speed box compared to his 5 speed 06 model.  Problem is they want £17k for an entry level poverty spec model, and £19.7k for the Titanium...  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/down.gif)

It's supposed to be as well made as the German executive cars (I'm not sure that is a compliment) and as refined.  But if you buy the top model and add the toys (self parking etc) it comes in at a german executive saloon price of 29k...   (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/shame.gif)  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/shame.gif)

Hmm might not be anything up then, as my drive is a mix of dual carriageway @ 70, then "A" roads with 30/40/50 limits on, lots of roundabouts, junctions etc so longest 'constant' driving section is 15 mins without slowing / stopping etc....

Around 30 sounds about right.

The 1.6 Astra I had as a hire car did 27mpg average which was in v heavy London traffic as in stop start, and mostly 40-50mph dual carriageways with some 70mph.

Yah that won't be helping.

How much pressure do you put on the accelrator peddle? I hardly ever push mine down more than a quarter, if I do it is to over-take a tractor (lots out this way) or a lorry doing 40mph. As I say, I use the gears to accelarate, hardly taking the car above 2k rpm, then 3k to cruise at 65mph.

Lots of talk on the VW forums at the moment about running old 90s diesels with straight vegetable oil - VW Passats, Golfs, Mercedes, some Fords etc. I used to put a 50/50 mix in my old VW T3 Wedge and I would sure do it again if I had a diesel with a Bosch pump (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

Update for the 'Boiz.

Got a lowly 45.5mpg out of the last tank but that, unfortunately, included about 3 hours in various rolling traffic jams last thursday.

The next tank went in on Friday morning and after clocking over 300 miles that day the computer was predicting a range of 780 miles out of the tank !!!

Needless to say that dropped back down to 650 after picking up the trailer, towing the Camaro, hauling half a ton of slate then returning the trailer again.

I'm staying away for 3 days in Southampton this week which is over 200 miles round-trip so I'm hoping to finally see my 50mpg from this tank . . . It'd be even cooler knowing that it came in the same tank as using it for towing.

I'd towed lovely BTW. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Last tank saw 646.1 miles  - and that included towing the 'Maro, haulin a trailer and 500kgs of slate !!

51.2 MPG !!!

I don't see me getting much better than that but I'll keep trying.

Current tank isn't looking great - should be 600miles-ish.

Start duct taping door seams once people get in the car, get your neighbour or friend to seal yours once you're in it. Don't forget the obvious like the bonnet, the gaps around the lights etc. Make sure your tyres are pumped up the bursting, in fact go for that ballon effect, less contact with the road, less rolling resistance. Remove the rear seats, or fold them down. That upright action from them isn't very aerodynamic. Don't brake, turn the engine off when going down hill. Disconnect all the fuses in the box to non essential things, ABS, Airbag etc, all of this eats power off the engine. If you can, just get someone to trailer your car about, this is a dead cert to cover miles without burning fuel.

On a serious note though, have you checked all the filters and that since you got it?

I was hoping to average 55MPG so it is a little low.

That said it is high mileage so it's not gonna be at it's prime. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

EDIT.

I've had it 6 weeks today and it covered it's 3,000th mile under my ownership today, too, so 500 miles a week should be in the region of 25,000 a year - which is the minimum I'd expect.

If it's all serviced etc then it all comes down to how you drive.  I managed to coax 34mpg out of the IROC *once* but that involved clever forward planning in terms of overtaking slower traffic on the motorway etc and careful use of the throttle downhill to gain speed to go uphill plus letting it naturally slow down a little uphill if necessary.  It's amazing what difference your driving can make though.

I know what you're saying about forward planning - I used to get a steady 18.5mpg out of the '86 CDV around town.  But that could drop to 11mpg if you were careless.

Drove like a saint with my last tank a good mix of MK and A road (trips to Northampton(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/work.gif) and Linslade (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/shag.gif) driving at 60mph max and gentle acceleration.

24MPG (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/beavisnbutthead.gif)
23.91 Pence per Mile (fuel at 1.29 per litre)

Normally get 21-22MPG (mostly MK driving)
27ish p/pm (fuel at 1.29 per litre)

absolutely, I got 32 out of the camaro a couple of times, and 28 was easy to achieve on motorway runs.

The mustang never really got quite as good, about 27 was the best, and with the bent crank, 6mpg, while not managing to get the car over 60 mph on an A road run....

Info dump for Key Programming :

From Piston Heads :

Remote Transmitter Programming (410040)

1. Note:
A maximum of four keyless entry remote transmitters can be programmed to the generic electronic module (GEM). Programming must be done at the same time for all the transmitters.

Note:
To enter programming mode, first make sure that the vehicle battery is fully charged and the anti-theft system is not armed or triggered (if equipped).

Close all doors and fasten the safety belts to make sure conflicting chimes do not sound during programming.

2. Turn the ignition switch from position I to position II at least four times in six seconds.

3. Turn the ignition switch to position I.

4. The GEM is now in the learning mode.

5. Press and hold one of the buttons on the remote transmitter until a chime sounds. This indicates a new transmitter code has been successfully received.

6. After each successful programming, another 10 second learning mode is automatically entered, up to a maximum of four times.

7. To program additional transmitters, repeat step 5.

8. The system will leave the learning mode after the ignition switch is turned to position III, or if no new transmitter is programmed during the 10 seconds, or if four remote transmitters have been programmed.

9. Note:
An incorrect programming procedure does not affect the stored codes.

After successful programming, only the new programmed transmitters will be accepted.

10. Test all the programmed transmitters, by activating and deactivating the locking/unlocking functions.

From an eBay seller :

Remote Central Locking Programming Instructions:

Insert the ignition key and turn from position II (Ignition) to position 0 (off)
and back four times within three seconds. Remove the ignition key.
The locking control system is now in "learn mode" for the next 20 seconds the
red warning system LED stays on continuously to indicate this.
During the 20 seconds press one of the transmitter buttons. The remotes signal and
code number is learned by the locking module and is indicated by flashing the
warning system LED.
Wait until learn mode times out (20 seconds) or switch the ignition back to ON.

Program a new key (Note you require at least 2 keys to program another)

Insert the first programmed key into the ignition and turn to position II
Turn back to 0 and remove the key
Insert the second programmed key into the ignition and turn to position II
Turn back to 0 and remove the key
Key programming mode is now activated and you have ten seconds to:
Insert the unprogrammed new key into the ignition and turn to position II
Turn back to 0 and remove the key
Allow 10 seconds to pass for the system to exit programming

UPDATE.
Not done anything to the Mondy at all.

She's still going strong, clocking up nearly a thousand miles in the last week and a bit.

I have put some RedX injector cleaner through with the last couple of tanks and at the last refil got a whopping 52.3MPG - my best yet.

As I start to do longer and longer journies I hope to increase that further.

Nothing to note, got a couple of light scratches recently and the inside looks like $hit at the moment as been used to haul some SERIOUS weight recently (350kg of paving slabs x 2 and 250+kg of cement as well as multiple tip runs during the CRK building works).

Has an occasional starting issue but since running the injector cleaner that's almost ceased.

Mileage is currently 179,422 miles. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Btw, Mike (who came to the Foos with me) has a 55reg 130 hatchback mondy. He just had his handbrake cable snap but while it was in asked how much he was looking at for a new cambelt. He didn't realise those things run chains for the timing. He was most pleased!

turbowiesels are designed for higher air flow rates than N/A and higher combustion chamber pressures. If you've pootled a diesel, try this. sit in neutral with a warm idling engine. floor the throttle, and hold the engine on the governor for five seconds. observe the quite remarkable smoke screen. drive it normally, and you wont get so much smoke.

piston crowns etc don't get so hot under extremely gentle use, and the sludge and soot soon gums things up.

even an NA diesel should never live at the bottom of the rev range - in fact, no engine should.

But why does driving a car economically usually mean keeping the revs down?

As much as I try that myself, I weekly give it a good kicking for a couple of reasons, a) Puts a smile on my face, b) reminds me why I like the car enough not to get rid of it.

I think it's a good idea to give it an Italian Tune up ever once in a while.

After reading more PhilO is right, carbon build-up seems to be the biggest issue from the cylinder not reaching a hot enough temperature to burn it off.

However, it seems this only really happens if you are doing a lot of idling such as sitting in traffic or a delivery driver. Short journeys will also have the same impact. If you drive keeping the revs low, but for long distances you are okay as the cylinders have time to heat up - which is what I do for my commute. Then every now and then, maybe once a week, I give it a blow out by over-taking quicker than I usually would.

Interesting though, always learning :)

Went skating last night and one of the guys there said mine was very 'retro'. Now it's only a 2000 model so 11 years old, but can you really call that retro?! Probably end up being a future classic and just like my dad saying 'oh when I was a lad them Mondeos were just yer average car!' - he came out with a similar comment when I started talking about MK1 escorts. He can't understand how or why people pay so much for them now!

Yeah would be a daily 100 Mile round trip so not suitable for the Stang.
and as a second car she's not quite special enough so I'll start looking for a cheap V8 of some kind (3rd gen perhaps), and a place to keep it. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

I considered the X-Type.

Couldn't get over paying 75% more for and older, less specced car.

The badge ain't worth that much . . . but you know that already.

Servicing costs more too and it's got a smaller luggage capacity.

Yeah I know what your saying and totally agree with you.  I've driven both many times and logically the Mondao makes far more sense...but since when have I chosen a car using my brain.  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/lol.gif)
I did have a look at general service items and they weren't that bad, but then it's mostly Mondao stuff.

Honda Accord, Saab 93 and Volvo S60 are others on the list.
Though I'd probably end up with a Mondao, at least for the short term.

Anyway a lot of if's, but's and maybe's before I may have to sell the Mustang.

why limit yourself, there are some excellent alternatives out there.

How about a volvo S40 (or C70 if you are ok with a petrol) or a Pug 406 HDi (excellent car for the money - ask don shiftini) you could also look into a Saab 9-3 or a honda accord (if you can find the extra £££ - they do fetch good money). the Alfa 159 is excellent but will still fall well outside your budget, as they hold their money like crazy, and still haven't really dipped below £7k for a high miler. the 156 is getting a little old now, but a late model could be had with the 1.9 JTD for about £4k - buy carefully and they are very good cars.

Passats and A4's are ok, not exceptional, and fetch a lot more money than they are really worth.

I'd avoid the Vectra like the plague, aside from being unbearably dull, they have a lot of problems. I'd not jump for joy at an X type either, unles its the 2.5 or 3.0 neither of which are going to be any more economical than the stang (although they will be a lot quicker) the MK3 mondeo is ok, but no better than any other alternative.

whatever you go for, check the DMF carefully, on almost any car they are a £1000 repair when (not if) they fail.

again, if petrol is ok, I think a Volvo C70 would be my choice of sensible car, in orange (in fact, I was going to buy one before i bought the stang)

should fine a really nice one for £3k

Mustang is £360

hmmm.... if you can find an owners club, you can usually get your best deals there for insurance - my £25 per year fees for alfa owner easily outweigh the £200 insurance saving.

The other factor is the more mainstream the car, generally the more it costs to insure, example - maserati 3200GT's are quite cheap to insure, because they never got popular with chavballers in the way ferraris did, who then wrap them round the nearest lamp post.

ONE YEAR AND 22,000 MILES ON . . . . . .

My Mondeo is still going - only one minor service in that time.  Have replaced one headlight bulb and put on two tyres for the MoT - That's it !!!

Last tank's MPG averaged 55mpg (that included the snow)

The ONLY faults that have developed are:

A minor hot-start problem - takes a second or two on the starter (MPG not affected).
Bulb behind the dash for the trip meter has failed (but still easily visable even at night)

Beat that Alfa Boy (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rofls.gif)

EDIT - Current mileage just under 193,000 miles. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/beavisnbutthead.gif)

5500ish miles in a little over 4 months, 1 service and set of wipers.
No issues...other than me busting up an alloy in January and the locking wheel nut key mysteriously vanishing from the ash tray last week (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

Getting about 55MPG as well (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)
The return trip to work is around 60mpg.

Current mileage 101600 ish

I'm back looking at the market for a new economical ride (yeah, probably not the best place to ask on an American car forum!) sadly a new or old Mondeo is not on the list. I'm limiting myself to 1.6 and will probably settle for a Focus Estate.

Ive got a 2000 focus estate dude, its awesome!  I got the 1.8 as i know the ins and outs of them, the 1.6's are yamaha developed zetecs, you dont actually save much fuel using them as they have to work a lot harder!

the 1.6 is cheaper to tax kf ou get a 2001+, hence i went for a late 2000 1.8.  I'd have got the TDCI if i was travelling to work but mpg isnt really an issue as i do less than 5k/year

Interesting.  I'm currently on the look out for a runaround for when Sammy goes back to work and was initially put off the Focus estates because of the 1.8L - which seemed to be standard on those.

She wants something small so I my even go for a Festa but that seems too small to me.

Focus's are better cars but there's more choice of Festa's, it seems. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

i personally wouldnt fancy a fiesta, they're just a bit too small.  THe focus is lovely (i had a mk1 focus when they first came out) so I may be a little biased.  They ride very well, they're nippy enough on any motorway.  I think the 1.8 has 115hp as standard, not as torquey obviously as the tdci but adequate for a daily runner.

Bits are cheap from eurocar parts, breakers yards are FULL of focuses so you're never left looking for a part.  I pulled the front brake system off a focus st170 in a breakers yard and bolted it on to mine, the discs are massive and the calipers are huge.  I'd do the upgrade on ANY focus i buy in the future, you simply CANNOT have too much braking power!  especially around town when every f**kwit in front of you wants to park in a tiny space theyve seen at the last minute!

Post by: Andy on February 22, 2012, 05:06:53 pm
(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/funny.gif) last bit deserves that, so true.

I've had to make a serious choice in deciding that I *need* a reliable cheap car that I'm willing to put a fair bit of money into, to last 5-7 years.

I'm looking at less than 40k cars, enough room to fit either my mates or fishing gear in, and in blue.

Ive ruled out diesels, as although I drive about 100 miles a week just commuting, I don't think the offset of diesel works against petrol, so I'm looking at 1600cc or smaller petrols really.

I'm sold on Fords as they're cheap like you say! Might not be as refined as say Hondas or VW's they're still great value for money.

There is no way I would leave oil going for 20-odd thousand miles (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/jaw.gif)

I know oil technology has improved, but still, sludge, fuel contamination along with all the metal fragments floating around isn't ideal.

The manual for my gf's Fiesta says Ford recommend 12k intivals but Haynes recommend 6k, especially the filter, which is what we stick to. It is only £20 for oil and a filter for a Ford.

Regret buying the thing now. It was a bet my dad set me, saying you can't buy it any more 'yadda yadda' huh, I showed him, bought a whole 25 litre drum. Turns out he didn't want to creosote the shed after all, instead use some nancy boy preservatives.

20k on the same oil

i ran my astro for over 3 years as a daily and done 37,000 miles in it and i never changed the oil or even had to top it up.
it was always run on lpg and every time i checked the oil always looked clear, not like new but it was never black.

tbh, i never spent a penny on it service wise because it just kept going.
no advisories on the first 3 mots and on the last i got two, n/s front tyre worn on edge and rear brakes low. i sold it then lol(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Yeah - expenses are great - today alone got me around £110 and the fuel only probably cost £25-max.

She blitzed the 200,000 mile-mark, of course . . . on about 200,137 at the moment.

She passed it on the way back from Tamworth . . . So as a treat I detoured into Stony Stratford and picked up new Oil & Air filters, 5L of 5W 30 Semi and a can of engine flush.  I also chucked in half a bottle of Redex injector cleaner when I filled up earlier, too.

Service parts = £31.00 - my only outlay during the second year of ownership so far (since 20th February that is).

She's been cleaned but I didn't pay for that. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Changed the Oil and Air Filters earlier this afternoon - Great weather for it (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/smirk.gif)

New oil, too, obviously . . . Even gave the engine bay a wipe round (looks surprisingly a lot better).

Will investigate the belt and decide if I'm doing that too.

Have been a little concerned about the economy she's returning of late but the last tank returned just over 700 miles (which was a 60/40 mix of motorway and town journies) so am happy, there !!

Last tank averaged : 57mpg - Not the best but still perfectly acceptable.

Economy has now gone up a bit . . . seems she prefers the colder weather ?????

Anyway.

She passed 205,000 miles a few days back.

Still going strong.  Nothing to report.

Would guess she'll need new rear tyres for winter.   Maybe front brake pads (the first since I've had her).  We'll see.

I assumed the fuel economy will improve with cooler weather on most cars, due to the denser air. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

Diesels don't have a choke, they just run like a bag of shit for 10 mins after start up. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Mine always performed better in winter, I put it down to the intercooler being a LOT more effective with cold air hitting it as opposed to it be relatively warm all the time under the bonnet.

For the initial start up until the engine is at normal temperature, I guess it would be worse, but for the rest of the journey it should improve due to the cooler, denser air.

Some old Diesels used to. My 87' VW T3 1.6D came with a choke. I assumed they increased the fuelling by moving a valve on the pump and forcing the engine to run rich.

Modern Diesels run a 'cold strategy' controlled by the ECU, much like the Petrol engines. This would be a change in fuelling and air quantity. Some even change the engine timing.

Post by: Andy on October 03, 2012, 10:56:41 am
Yeah, some of the original diesels did, but even my Mk 2 didn't have one, and that didn't have an ecu. I put it down to there being no advantage of choking off the diesel as its not an explosive combustion but a compressive one. Add to that the diesel is injected directly into the cylinder!

Just thought about the differences with Diesel and Petrol.

We are forgetting the glow-plugs!

They warm the cylinder enough for the first start. So, where a choke or cold strategy attempts to run an engine rich or advanced whilst it is cold to allow it to warm up, the glow-plugs just warm the cylinders directly, then as you say, the compression ignition then powers through the rest of the start.  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

This isn't diesel related but I've noticed my predicted miles to go and MPG figure increase by 20 miles the last week. No change in driving habits I've noticed, in fact I've been using the AC more to clear the screen in the morning. (God bless Ford's Quickclear screen thing!)

I can only think that it's due to the colder air at the moment. Only driving my car really between 6-7 and 8-11pm, so it's always colder.

Anyway, back to the derv talk!

Well and truly got my money's worth out of the front pads - over 36000 miles in my ownership and f**k knows how many before !

Discs were also utterly f**ked and look like the originals. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/cool.gif)

£18 for pads, £36 for discs.  Not bad.  Was hoping they'd last a little longer, though. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rtfm.gif)

The pads what came out looked like they were once the same but for some reason the inner pads wore like that.

Almost as if the centre section was tougher material . . ?

Funny thing is the brakes were always very good and never made a noise or snatched . . . I was quite shocked to see the discs were that bad as they gave no hint of it . . .

EDIT - I was just about down to the metal tabs on the ends of the brackets so suppose it could've been that that created the groove but, again, with all the driving I do I should've felt that sooner.

Just ordered a new screen washer pump off ebay - £5.99.

My fault the old one died, really . . . I purposely let the water level drop to nothing so I could flush out the tank . . but in priming the totally empty tubes burn't out the old pump !

It obviously didn't have long left and it's an easy swap so I'm not too bothered.

Had mine just over a year now, done 26000 miles ish though has cost me more than yours (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/can.gif)

2 new wheels and a wing mirror £134, 2 tyres £170 and the injectors £500..
Around £80 on service consumables.
= £884

Of course she's earn't me over £5k after fuel expenses and the insurance is literally half what it was last year thanks to Chris Knott.

Not included the original cost of the car either so a profit of around £2.5k (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Do you work at one fixed place of work, Chris, or at multiple locations ? (I ask as for mileage allowances you can't claim for travel to a fixed place of work - unless they've changed that in which case I need to put in more (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif))

So I don't get paid to travel to my offices in Leighton Buzzard but do to, say, London, as it's not classed as my fixed place of work.

It's worth triple-checking as my former Director had to pay back over £7000 in falsely claimed mileage when we were audited a few years back ! (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/shame.gif)

In the last calendar (not tax) year, my total costs have be £31 service parts, £54 brake parts, £6 washer pump.
She'll need two new rear tyres for the MoT in December @ £45 each, fitted.

£45 a tyre?!

Serious? They must be a Chinese brand of some sort or you get a killer deal.

Stuff like brakes and tyres I will spend a premium on. It hurts the bank, but I'd like to know I'm rolling safe. My tyres are circa £90 a corner and are Michellins, I apparently pay a premium as they're 16" but still reasonable on my opinion.

Was reading on pistonheads about some Chinese brand tyres are being sold without E marks and are banned in German.

Might have opened a can here and don't mean to cause offence, would like to know how they react when driving in the wet/other conditions.

Altran pay 25 pence per mile for me to travel to work and I can claim the other 20p per mile (for the 1st 10,000 miles) off the tax man as expenses tax relief, via a P87 though only if I'm not travelling to the same place for more than 2 years.

Actually looking back they were £137 for the pair (fitted).
They were a well reviewed tyre in the mid price bracket, (HANKOOK K425 KINERGY) I try not skimp too much on tyres, safety first and all that.
They were also supposed to be more fuel efficient than other tyres but I didn't notice any difference.
They came fitted at them work, got them from Event Tyres, a fair price imo (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

I've only done about 4000 miles on them so far they but handle the motorways and wet country roads fine, including an emergency brake last week.
The back end did slip out a little on a muddy round-a-bout last week but I don't know what tyres are on the back, at least one them is a cheap tyre put on by the garage I bought the car from.

Indeed, couldn't fault the guy/company and it saved me wasting precious weekend time getting tyres fitted (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

My cheapie tyres are good.

Quiet enough on the motorways, good in the wet.  Have handled 4 heavy/emergency braking scenarios and cope with country lanes fine.

I could drive the car harder I suppose by why would you, it's a diesel hearse !?

For the record they're 16" "Autogrip F100's" . . . both "E" marked and "DOT" marked . . . Been on the car (front) for about a year, now.

Think I had them in the snow last winter . . don't remember them being particularly bad or good . . .

£45 a tyre?!

Serious? They must be a Chinese brand of some sort or you get a killer deal.

I paid £30 a tyre for (from memory) 185/70/14 for Firestones all round, then when the front wore first (as they always do), I replaced the fronts alone with 'Khumos'? They would happily do 25/30k on the front.

Those rear Firestones I bought back in 2009-ish are STILL going after 50k on my old Mondeo which has now been scrapped (banger raced) and are now on my Pop's Mondeo which has done a further 20k, yet they still have plenty of rubber left! I blame the Auto on/off system and 6am starts...and 26000 miles a significant chunk of that in the dark/dusk/dawn.

EDIT: of course I have no idea how long the bulbs had been on there when I bought it but they blew fairly soon and within a month of each other.

Beat 4 in a month. That's how many I had to replace in the time I owned that cougar. It's not so much shits and giggles when everytime you have to remove the headlight unit. Mind you, blowing bulbs was the tip of the iceberg for that thing!

Passed the MoT no problem (in fact the words "amazing" were uttered regarding the condition considering the high mileage)

However, between Chrimbo and New Year the N/S/F spring snapped which left the old girl near-crippled.

The new spring was just £19 but after reading up on it I decided that I didn't have the time (or daylight) to do it myself so I dropped it off this morning to be sorted (should be £40 labour).

Just need to finish fitting the washer pump - B@stard of a job as there's just no room in there - will need to go in from the wheel arch.

Finally got that washer pump fitted, too.

What a F*cking ball ache !

The eBay seller sent me the wrong pump (didn't notice til I had the old one sitting next to it) so I had to use the top part of the old pump and the bottom part of the new one, dremel-down the connectors and turn one of them through 90 degrees !!

Went to clip it in place and found that the body of the new one is slightly too big so forced it in place . . . . connected it up, tested - all good.

Put some water in and it's leaking out of one of the water pipe connectors !!!

Drained the tank and disconnected the pipe, smeared some araldite on the pipe at the pump then clipped it back on.

No leaks - all working fine.

Total time over three attempts . . . about 4 hours !!! (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rolleyes.gif)

This could be the beginning of the end . . . (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/sad.gif)

Have done a bit of research on the "squeak" I'm getting when changing down gears and it's looking like it could be the clutch slave cylinder.  Not a big deal, maybe, but apparently to replace them you need to drop the gearbox . . . . Which means you should also be replacing the clutch and flywheel too (and the starter motor according to Ford) . . .

Meh.

On top of that I had a flashing glow-plug light about a week ago (symptoms are about 50% engine power, sluggish after 10mph) .  That quickly went away.  Then came back and also put the engine management light on too.

Then they both went out.  Again.

Then last night the plug light came back on.  This morning that light is back out but the engine management light is back on again !

It doesn't seem to be storing any codes, though ??

There seems to be a pattern.  She's never had a physical issue when starting from cold.  Every time the glow plug light has come on (when there's been a loss of power) it's been when she's been started from hot.

Ideas ?

Hmm . . .

Post by: Andy on June 12, 2013, 09:35:46 am
If the slave cylinder is needing replacing then yeah, best to do the clutch to, then if the clutch needs replacing the DMF should be replaced as well. That is what everyone recommends as you don't want to be 10k down the road and find the DMF is borked. Only when it is really borked are you likely to start having issues with the starter. That comment about changing it to is only if the DMF has been playing up for a long time.

Have your tried the in built diagnostics to see if it has any codes? You may need a more specific code reader than just a generic OBD2 one. If the light is coming up a code is being thrown and should be readable somehow. That said, even with the code it could be cryptic what is actually going wrong.

Sounds like one or more of your injectors has worn out, as it sounds identical to the issues I had.  Not surprising really as they normally go somewhere between 100-130K.  Around £500 a pair if you get a garage to do it or you can risk getting used ones off Ebay £150 ish quid each if you wanted to do it yourself...though I can't remember if they have to be coded to the ECU.

Edit: The poor running degraded to almost unusable after around 200 miles for me, that and your clutch issues though...sounds like it's time to find another car.. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/down.gif)

I don't plan to replace the Mondeo immediately.

As Sammy's not using her Focus, I'll just tax that and use that short-term.  It's not as economical as the Mondeo but there's no point getting another car if one's sitting there taking up space and doing nothing.

The tax runs out on the Mondeo at the end of the month (it's also due a service then, too) so I'm hoping WORSE CASE to try to limp until then.

I've got a 110-mile round trip to do later today and a few 250-milers later this month so we'll see.

Titsy managed to pull the code "P2263" from the Mondeo . . .

And so begins the vain attempt to preserve the old girl a little longer.

On Monday night I took off and cleaned the EGR valve and then checked the pipes to the Turbo.

The EGR speaks for itself but the pipes underneath (a mix of metal and rubber pipes joining them) looked O.K.

There were drips of oil forming right at the bottom of this pipe but I figure it's just a build up of oil vapour condensed and seeped out the join ?

I wouldn't thought it would've affected the turbo ???

Does yours have an electronic turbo actuator?  Mines vacuum..which is odd as they were on pre 2003 models as far as I can tell (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

EDIT: I did all these easy fix checks before discovering it was the Injectors, Turbo issues generally produce smoking exhaust (black)

I'll look at the actuator tonight.  No black smoke (unless you boot it hard when off of limp mode).

The link above matches my symptoms EXACTLY (even down to turning off the motor at speed and restarting while rolling to clear the fault - done this 6 times already before reading that thread).

This does look promising... Worth checking given the number of miles you've done it's entirely possible you've dislodged one of the wires with vibration. NB, the look to be welded not soldered, which is probably why the guy had to clean the pads back to copper to solder it.

If I take this part off (and there's an issue) can someone (more skilled with an iron) sort it for me ?

The soldering iron I have in my roll-cab is akin to soldering with a heated cold-chisel, accuracy-wise. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rolleyes.gif)

Sure, my iron should be good enough for that kind of work if it can be cleaned back to the copper.

Be interested to see if you have the electronic actuator (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

Had a look last night (later than expected as it took ages for the motor to cool down enough for me to lay across it !!) . .

It's definitely an electronic actuator.  I took off the C-clip and moved the ram back and forth and it seems free and fairly smooth at the turbo end.

I didn't take the actuator off last night as I couldn't risk disabling her last night.

I'll park her up and remove it tomorrow night . . . . (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

Didn't attack the Turbo Actuator until last night as I needed her to clock some heavy miles on Monday and Wednesday so -

Anyway.  Got the actuator off (literally a 2-minute job including finding the tools).

Took it apart and surely enough there appears to be at least one broken connection.

Have brought it into work today so am gonna try soldering it on my lunch break.

Fingers crossed . . . .

At this stage I must announce that I will NOT be giving up my day job . . . . .

I had two wires with duff connections . . . due to lack of expertise / heavy handedness I managed to break one of the 4mm long wires off completely !!!

Somehow I managed to get it back on . . . roughly . . . here's how it turned out . . .

I'm not sure if the blob of solder over the right-hand wire will effect it somehow ???

Despite the look of it they do all have solid connections, now . . . and it did take some scrubbing with a needle file to get down to copper.

Will re-fit tonight unless someone tells me that the right-hand wire needs improving.

But it shouldn't affect anything should it ?

I'm thinking thin wire now resembles a bit of rope . . . it won't alter the resistance and affect the signal through the wire/solder blob or something daft like that ???

Not pretty, but should be alright... Have you made sure to blast out any debris with a can or air or air line? you don;t want any debris causing a short and blowing up the board...
Title: I'm a MONDEO MAN, now !!!

It should be fine, as long as there is actually continuity then it'll be ok. As Titsy says, check the board is clean before powering up.

Fault finding with all those smd would be a pain in the arse!

Hmm.

Well that ain't great.

Put it all back together last night and started her up.  No flashing light.  Took her for a drive - got 50 yards up the road and the light started flashing - WTF ??

She's never put the light on when stone cold before and never while moving so I thought (hoped) it was maybe a throw-back from the ECU . . .

Cleared the error by doing the old trick of getting to speed and turning her off, getting to second-stage ignition and pausing before re-starting (all above 50mph)

Took her for a drive through town, stop-start-stop-start to warm her up, then up the A5 to get her really toasty.

Pulled into a lay-by.  Turned her off . . . and on again - no flashy lights.  Did it again.  No flashy lights.

Drove back into town and pulled into a bus stop.  Repeated again with no issues.

Get back home parked up.  Turn off.  Pause.  Start up again.  Still no flashy lights.

At this point I'm hopeful it was just the ECU complaining.

So.

This morning.

Goes out.  Starts her up.  No issues.

Drive 14 miles, through town, through the country roads, up the bypass and into Leighton Buzzard . . . . About 500 yards from work and the light starts flashing !!!

Really.

Gets to work.  Turn her off.  Wait.  Start her back up again (normally without doubt the light would be flashing) but no flashy light.

It's now gone from a very predicable, manageable fault to a totally erratic will-it-won't-it fault.

In short.  About 10 times WORSE !!!

Question is, is this a good sign.  What I did obviously had some effect.  Is it worth trying to re-do the soldering again, this time tidier or am I really grasping at straws.

The actuator comes off and apart in minutes so it's not a major big deal to have another look I suppose . . .

???

What do we reckon ?

I'm thinking that for £9, replacing the fuel filter will eliminate another possible fault . . unlikely but possible.

Unfortunately on my way to work in the rain I don't fancy pulling over, popping the bonnet, getting out my tool kit, disconnecting the battery . . . . . waiting half an hour, then reconnecting and starting only to find the fault immediately comes back.

Killing the engine at speed clears it (and gives me my Turbo back) EVERY time.

My way is quicker and I don't get wet or dirty. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/lol.gif)

EDIT - I'm not saying this would clear every code - but it remedies this particular fault, short term and if that's enough for me to complete my journey then all well and good.

Bought a new soldering iron and attacked the solder joins again.  Got two looking good and tidy but the one on the board just would not take solder.

I tried multiple times and scratched the terminal down so far it was almost level with the board but still wouldn't take the solder.

Evenually found some "Leaded" solder that stuck to the terminal but f**k was it difficult to work with and would not flow.
In the process of working it I broke the 4mm wire so it's now 3mm.
Had to re-do one of the decent looking joins again . . . the two solders got mixed (and didn't like that) but in the end I'm 95% sure I got decent connections this time.

Problem is it didn't work.  I tested it last night and it was going good but the light came on and hasn't really been off since . . .

I re-read some other threads and have now checked the inter-cooler pipe, cleaned the Actuator connectors and MAF connectors, have cleaned the MAF itself and re-set the ECU by disconnecting the battery for an hour.

I've also replaced the fuel filter.

I drained the old filter and checked the contents . . . a bit of grit but no metal particles so the fuel pump should be good.

All of this and no change.  The light is now on most of the time.

Total cost was £9 for the filter but I'm still thinking actuator.

Dunno.

Weeeeelllllllllllll . . . .

I did a couple more tests earlier . . . the ram to the turbo gate was pretty smooth in operation so I've never thought this was the issue.

That said I wanted to test it anyway.

A way of doing this (apparently) is to start the car and bring the revs up . . if the gate is getting stuck you should hear the actuator clicking as the worm gear inside is trying to open the gate.

(No clicking).

so i disconnect arm from actuator, bring up to 2500 revs and move the arm back and forth . . . I could clearly hear the turbo spinning so felt fairly safe to put the "new" actuator on.

Bolted it up in seconds (I could do it with my eyes closed, now), started her up and no lights.

Good so far.

Gun her up to 4,000 revs . . . still no light.

Take her for a long run.  Pull in and shut her off when she's nice and hot.  Re-start.  Nothing.

Get diesel (I'm feeling lucky) . . still no lights on start-up.

Drive home, park up, shut off, start up.  Nothing.

No lights and by now the EML has also turned itself off, too !!

I *think* it's sorted.

I'm certainly hoping so as I've just put another 6 months tax on her . . . normally I'd go for a year but I'm not pushing my luck !!!

O.K. so to summarise this last little issue . . .

Total time researching issue : 1.5 hours
Total time testing/checking/repairing issue : 4.5 hours
Total cost of repair parts : £75 (Actuator was £60 but I opted for next day delivery for £15)
Misc : £9 for Fuel filter (much needed), £14 for Soldering Iron (an improvement on my old one).

It's been a headache but I can't complain.

On the plus side I've got a job in Ipswich on Friday and the mileage the Mondeo will earn me from that will pay for all the expenses.

I thought I'd treat the mondey to a bit of TLC last night so tackled something that's been irritating me ever since I bought her . . . .

Somehow, the P/S front rub-strip has always been a grey-ish white colour . . . which is odd as I'd assumed that it'd just be plastic . .

Anyway.  Here's what it looked like :

And with a wipe over with thinners, some masking, a spray of primer left over from a previous job and a top-coat of satin black I've had sitting in my garage for years -

Ta-dah !!

I did both sides in the end as I just about had enough paint and the paint didn't quite match the original colour . . .

1 hour's work (off-and-on) and all free or "in stock" materials.

Also had a look at the rear brakes . . . the discs look really good so I'm just gonna replace the pads.

(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif) (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Also gonna do my anti-slip tape trick to her rear bumper, too, as she's always had a few chips on her rear end.

So.  One of my neighbours backed into the Mondeo Saturday night.

Given her age I haven't made much of a fuss.  I gave it a quick bashing and T-Cut and it looks better.
Pity it cracked the paint otherwise you (or I should say, "I") wouldn't notice it.

Well this one's been a battle but she passed 225,000 earlier today.

I was considering replacing her with a 300C towards the end of the year but £6000 for a 7 year old 300C seems a bit silly.
'08 Plate (new shape) Mondeo's are going for £3,500 and with my generally good experiences with Mondeo's to date I'd be daft not to get another.

Who knows, though . . this one might hang on a bit longer.

Got another Mondy to look at this weekend and a wildcard to test drive this evening.. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/security.gif) (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Best I've been offered for the old Mondeo?  £600 (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/shame.gif)  I paid just over £2k not even 2 years ago.

I reckon you'll get more than that on eBay - I saw a '06 TDCi with over 200,000 miles up for a grand !

I reckon I could punt mine for £750-850 with a carefully written advert and some good pictures.

Depreciation is the biggest draw back with Furds! 10 a penny, sadly even if its well looked after it still won't hold with the market being flooded with others.

The positives you should spin are either the lack of the dreaded DPF and it having its DMF (if its had it done). My old diesel (wish I'd kept it now) would be a dream nowadays, no DMF, no DPF, no worry of the turbo dying, still did about 500 to a tank. There's a lot to be said for agricultural engineering!

Yeah, even We Buy Any Car offered £500 not not much to loose giving it a punt on Ebay... might even try and "T-Cut" off the handprints that have been on there since I got it (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/lol.gif)

Indeed hence the wildcard I'm looking at tonight, the Mondeo's will half in value in the 2 years I plan to have it where as this one will only lose about a 1/4...going on todays prices, ages etc.
On the other hand the Fords are relatively cheap to maintain and really good cars.

Sadly the only draw back with the Bluetooth Ford unit, won't stream audio. Have you Etis'd it?

Plumb your details in here: http://www.etis.ford.com/vehicleRegSelector.do;jsessionid=3BDE8422A8C3296E25C6A28466E117F1.fcvas506

Yeah, looks like I could update the module but they're not cheap and I'm not that bothered, I can still use my old bluetooth->FM transmitter jobby for long journeys, to plumb in the Satnav & tunes.

Mostly listen to the radio on my commute..which is now DAB (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/cool.gif)

Yup Etis'd it but no surprises, my old Ghia was fairly high spec so the only new bits to go wrong are the adaptive headlights, curry warmers, bluetooth/voice control thingy and keyless start.

I will warn you, the Bluetooth/voice control for inputting phone numbers sucks balls.

You have to say the numbers and took me a bit to long to realise saying 'ohh' doesn't get you a zero. It can only take about 4 numbers at a time as well. Oh and some times she throws a strop and just ignores you, which is nice and rude.

*hits voice button*

me: Phone

*awkward pause*

her: COMMAND PLEASE!

Me: Phone

Her: COMMAND PLEASE!

Me: PHOOOONE!

Her: Radio.

Me: Cancel! Cancel, forget it!

Her: Command canceled.

Then we just sit in silence for the rest of the journey.

Seems to understand everything I've tried so far but I would never bother trying to read a phone number to it..

Doesn't seem to have a command to switch to DAB on FM/AM which seem like a bit of an over sight..(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rtfm.gif)

Though it's far less effort to move my thumb an inch (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/lol.gif)
The novelty will wear off soon enough... though "Climate" > "De-mist" is fairly dramatic... whoooosh!

The only thing I hate about the Titanium models is on the estates they have the horizontal chrome trim under the windows.
On a pale coloured car it looks O.K but on a darker coloured one it's enough to stop me buying one - looks stuck-on and tacky !

I'm after a black estate next so will be opting for another poverty spec just to avoid that trim piece.

There's a guy who's got a new-shape titanium estate in black near the local shop.  First time I saw it I honestly thought he'd added that trim himself. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/lol.gif)

Well nearly 300 miles put on it now.

The engine is certainly more refined though overall MPG seems to be about the same, a little better around town but so far not quite as good on the motorway.. saying that the A/C's been on for a good chunk of those journeys so the jury is still out.

~50mpg currently 50/50 town/motorway & A-roads.

No really bad comments so far though the steering wheel is a degree or two off center and something strange and slimey/waxy has been split in the boot, covering the entire boot liner... you can't see it but can feel it, tried Vanish carpet shampoo/stain remover but that didn't shift it.. From 2008 onwards Ford fitted electronic assistance steering, it's a regular steering setup but you can adjust the level of feedback and how easy it is to turn the wheel either at speed or in town. Mine has three setting, Comfort Sport and Normal. If you drive up the motorway you really notice the assist kicking in and hindering much wheel movement in sport mode, but stop and change into comfort and it moves a lot more freely about the place.

Think it's on the stalk control (talking from a focus point of view) where on the scroll menu you can go into Settings and the. It has steering. If its not there then it's not fitted.

To be honest there is a list of minor issues that will start acting like nails in her coffin . . . nothing major at the moment but any one (or any combination) could effectively end her.

i) The clutch / gearbox is noisy sometimes on start up (It's occasional and goes away quickly).  Been like it off-and-on for nearly a year so - ?

ii) The brakes squeal once they're HOT.  I've had them apart and can't see any issues.  They're well copper-slipped and the pads have plenty of life, discs are good.  They work absolutely fine and she stops straight as a die.  I will have another look soon as she's due new rear tyres.

iii) If you down-shift (and effectively engine brake) there's a sharp and definite squeak.  This has been present for the last 20,000 miles and rarely occurs as I rarely drive her that hard . . . I've read that it's the clutch slave cylinder seal that's failed but after this long it should've failed completely a long time ago.

iv) The Mechanism to release the tailgate doesn't always work when it's hot and the sun has been on the back of the car - this has baffled me but entering winter it's not likely to be a problem again any time soon.

v) I know the N/S rear trailing arm bush is knackered.  It should fail the MoT in December on that.

vi) It will need 2 rear tyres for the MoT in December.  They're fine now but won't be with another 5,000 miles on them.

vii) She smokes on start up.  Always has a little but month-by-month it seems to get a little worse (could be me imagining it as she barely looses any oil between services).

viii) There's a recent new noise that sounds like a wheel bearing on it's way out but it's so quiet it's hard to pin-point.  It sounds like it's coming from the front but it's really so quiet that you only hear it going less than 20mph - even then - occasionally.

We'll see.

Will it's certainly doing better than my old one, only got to 140,000 and needed the injectors doing.  Though once done it drove perfectly.

No complaints on the new one but its only done 51k.

Cruises very nicely and handles very well for such a big car.

Only downside so far is the price of new tyres is a fair bit more but that's 18" wheels for you, also can't play music over the Bluetooth (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rtfm.gif) though finding Teamrock radio sorted that out nicely (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/beavisnbutthead.gif)

So, last night I went to leave work . . . turned the key to be confronted by a high-speed grinding noise (think of a dremel kind of noise).

O.K, so the starter motor is on it's way out . . .

Likely cause ?  Failing DMF, moving about, sheering the tops of the rivets off and the swarf caused is attracted to the magnet in the starter.

There's been gradual, increasing noises from the clutch/flywheel area for well over a year . . It's gotten particularly worse over the last 4 months so I've known this was coming . . . so much so that I hadn't actually brimmed the tank in that time.

So -

Required immediately :

DMF & Clutch kit £218 + £250 for fitting
Re-con Stater £50 + £40 for fitting

Total : £558

But the MoT is required in two weeks so . .

Required on or before the 18/12/13 :

Trailing arm bushes £32 + £80 for fitting
Rear brake pads (already bought) - Can fit myself
MoT test cost £40

I also have a wheel bearing on its way out but I'm struggling to pin point which one . . . . fronts are cheaper, but with more labour so it's gonna be around £55-£70 parts and labour, too.

Total : £207-£222

The tax is due at the end of December = £96 (for 6 months)

Also two of the tyres, even IF they pass the MoT will need replacing very soon and another one has a puncture/slow leak that needs repair . . . so add another £100 before the end of February . . .

All in -

£861 - £876 for her to survive the month . . . with another £100 coming very shortly after . . . and that's assuming nothing more shows up on the MoT !!!

Sammy's Focus has been sitting there doing nothing for just under a year, now . . . so I figure, chuck some tax on for £123 and use that.

It's done zero miles since the last MoT (which is due in January)

I'm going to carry on using the Mondeo for a couple of days, though - there's still a good £25 of diesel in her !

I'll probably stick her on eBay this week, though.  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/sad.gif)

My Pop's in a similar situation with his '99 1.8 Petrol Mondeo, the shocks have both gone at the front, meaning new shocks are needed and getting both struts out (AGAIN - as one spring had already broken a while ago), the windscreen has a massive crack in it, the cabin-fan only works on the windscreen demist-setting, the central locking is temperamental, the rear door handles stick, it needs at least one, possibly two new front tyres, the tax AND MOT are due in January and it generally drives like crap. Also not taking into account what else it will fail the MOT on.

The car is only worth £250/300 maximum and only then if it had a full MOT, tax etc.

It's now one of those cars where the MOT and Tax is worth more than the car.

He has to do quite a lot of miles, so I just said we will go and get another car for £500 / 1k, preferably this time, not a Ford.

You have done quite well with this one, but I have totally lost respect for them. In the family we have owned, 3 Mondeo's, 3 Fiesta's and a Ka, all of which have been pretty terrible and for anyone interested, I can list all of the faults.

I fully appreciate that sometimes it is not so much the car that is the problem, but instead, the way it has been treated by the previous-owner, so I do not judge a brand that quickly. However, after 7 Fords, all with quite a few issues, you can clearly tell they are built to a budget, which is a shame as the Engines are not too bad. The biggest disappointment was the '58 Fiesta that we spent 6k on. Nope. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/nono.gif)

Sammy's Focus has been sitting there doing nothing for just under a year, now . . . so I figure, chuck some tax on for £123 and use that.

Speaking of eBay . . . The Mondeo just went on !

Yes, there's a few little white lies in there, but nothing about the condition of the car.
I lied my a$$ off about getting a company car, though, simply as I, without fail, get stupid offers of P/X and figured saying I've got a new car on the way would stop this.

I think the DMF has really gone now . . it seemed like the starter wouldn't engage on Wednesday night when I left work so I had to bump-start her to drive her home . . .

I'm currently using Sammy's Focus but will do a little investigating this weekend to see if I can improve the Mondeo's starting . . . if only to make it worth a few more ££ !

I've just had a look for replacements but don't think I'll bother until at least the spring . . assuming the Focus holds up that long. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

I do already miss the big central arm rest, the heated front screen, the cruise control and the nice flat, low bumper and tow bar which I used to put my work boots on when I pull up to site.

Aww man :( sad to see a faithful steed die!

It's a real shame there isn't a solid flywheel replacement. DMFs, DPFs are going to be the things that kill off old faithful diesel cars of the future. Should've stuck with my old diesel Mondy, no ECU, no DMF, no DPF. Nice old fashion turbo unit.

O.K, she's still a potential ticking timebomb (isn't every car ?) but by investing just over an hour removing the starter, cleaning it, carefully oiling it and then replacing it - Hey presto ! She starts on the button, without hesitation.

I checked the starters teeth - they actually look really good considering . . . I also tried to force movement on the flywheel but I couldn't feel any.

The next stage, I reckon, will be to thoroughly abuse her tomorrow as I have a LOAD of bricks and concrete that'll need taking to the tip . . . If she survives that I think it's worth trying to MoT her a week early (before the auction ends) and go from there.

Update?

I loaded her up with concrete on Saturday so she was on the bump-stops and did a run to the tip . . . .

Sunday morning I did the same but this time with mainly bricks (with a little concrete).

Sunday afternoon I picked up 400 litres of top soil and 720 litres of compost (again, very much on the bump-stops) for my parents . . .

She maintained 44mpg throughout !!!

I suppose, as she's still going I should try to book her in for an MoT to see what happens . . . then, based on the outcome, decide whether to pull the auction or not.

Same here, only the TDCi Mondies had them, before they ran solid flywheels.

Apparently they make the Diesel engine smoother a more passenger friendly regards vibrations from the engine.

I never really noticed much difference and quite often had mine mistaken for a petrol when in it. However outside it sounded like a good old tractor!

Interesting . . . . She took yet more concrete-carrying abuse today before going in for an MoT.

She failed on rear tyres (as suspected), trailing arm and a blow in the back box.

I've already paid the money for the MoT . . . assuming I bodge the back box with a bandage, I'm looking at £90 for tyres plus £40 for the arm (can easily fit that myself).

I'd originally assumed it was one of the main trailing arm bushes but it turns out its the (estate only) lower arm which is an easy fix - bonus !

So £130 to get it through the MoT . . . . . ignoring the DMF - which is noisy - but still behaving fine . . .

Required immediately :

DMF & Clutch kit £218 + £250 for fitting - Ignore that for now
Re-con Stater £50 + £40 for fitting - Removed and Cleaned = £0

Total : £0

Required on or before the 18/12/13 :

Trailing arm bushes £32 + £80 for fitting - £40 for the part, I can fit
Rear brake pads (already bought) - Will get garage to fit £30 (need special tool)
MoT test cost £40 - Already Paid

I also have a wheel bearing on its way out but I'm struggling to pin point which one No mention of this in the MoT  . . . . fronts are cheaper, but with more labour so it's gonna be around £55-£70 parts and labour, too.

Total : £70

The tax is due at the end of December = £96 (for 6 months)

Also two of the tyres, even IF they pass the MoT will need replacing very soon and another one has a puncture/slow leak that needs repair . . . so add another £100 before the end of February . . . For the MoT

It was nearly £1000 a week ago . . . (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif) . . It all depends on how long that DMF lasts . . . .

Well, she's MoT'ed again - no advisers.

December's been the most expensive month to date . . . in fact she's cost more this month than she has in the average 12-month period previously ! :

Brake Pads £16 (inc. del)
Trailing Sub Arm £40 (inc. del)
MoT £40
2 x Tyres £90
Puncture £15
Bulb (from stock) £0
Exhaust repair (P40 from stock) £0

Weeeellll . . . .

The starter is making a racket again and taking a couple of go's to get started meaning that either it's picked up more existing crap floating around in the bell housing OR it's picked up new crap from the flywheel breaking down.

Either way it'll become unusable within a day or two again . . . .

Repairs will be in the region of £550 which is still cheaper than a new car and when I got the car it was £800-£1000 below market value at the time so I shouldn't complain.

My long-term plan will be to get the next shape Mondeo but I'm waiting for the "new" shape to come out so it devalues the current one.

Buying a new replacement this year though is simply out of the question . . . I've got too many other things planned !!

Just bare in mind the new diesels are a lot more grief than the Mk2 or Mk3 ones.

If you thought DMF was bad, try knackered DPFs or ones that are blocked. Now by the new MOT standard, if it had a DPF fitted, it has to have one, so you can't bypass them.

After actually having to scrape ice of Sammy's Focus this morning (arrgh, old cars !) I decided to buy the Solid flywheel conversion, clutch, slave cylinder and new starter for the Mondeo.

I figure it's the cheapest option, long term, as the Focus is costing me nearly twice as much to run as my Mondeo - especially on motorway runs.

So, £225 for the flywheel and clutch and £57 for the starter . . . (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

I'll find out later - she's in the garage having the new flywheel, clutch and starter fitted.

There's a lot of talk about the solid flywheels chewing up the gearboxes due to the "shock loads" . . . but, to be honest, I drive her pretty gently anyway so I'm not too concerned.

On top of that I only need her to survive until next February and the parts are all within warranty up until then.

Looking forward to driving her again, TBH.  The Focus has been fine but lacks the refinements of the Mondeo !

Well, reports so far regarding the solid-mass flywheel are pretty good.

Start up is no different . . . low-speed driving isn't noticeably different  . . . booting it is where you notice it - a little less refined but it's certainly more fun !!!

The only downside so far is when you turn the engine off . . . you get that old-skool diesel "chudder-chudder" which the DMF hid nicely.

I've also got a vibration at 1600-1800 revs when accelerating hard (but that could be the engine cover as I know one of the clips don't line up properly - I'll check it out this w/e).

Not noticed any "pull" on the drive-train but as I say, I generally drive her pretty gently.

On the plus side I also got the power steering fluid replaced for free !!

Over a month-on with a solid mass flywheel and it's going O.K* . . . Idle is actually smoother, I noticed recently, with the SMF . . . which is a little bonus . . .

Now for the * : However - She's developed a little issue recently . . .

About a week ago I ran her about 20 miles into the reserve (ie. passed 0 miles in the tank) and after that I noticed a definite mis-fire.

Fair enough, silly me.  So I thought blocked injector(s) caused by rubbish from the tank . . . add to that the fact that I haven't run any injector cleaner in her for over 6 months (I used to do this every 2 months or so)  - it all pointed to injectors.

So I put in some injector cleaner in and a splash of diesel (to keep the mix ratio pretty strong) . . . 100 miles later and no improvement . . . worse in fact.

Bugger.

Fooked injectors ?

So I set out this morning . . . now, she's been a bit smokey recently, but today the smoke has turned to a smoke-screen at times with thick clouds of  the stuff pumping out the back . . .

So I check the "MPG" setting and it's showing 2mpg less than normal . . .

Surely if she's mis-firing because of a blockage that'd be using LESS fuel . . . ?

So I guess she's over-fueling . . . . meaning the ECU-thingy is over-compensating for too much air.

So there's a leak . . .

Ta-dah !

The pipe just south of the EGR valve has gone . . err . . . south.

Ford want £70+ for a replacement but I've managed to find an "as OEM" one on ebay for £18.50 with free P&P.

I'll wrap it up in gaffer tape tonight to try and limp through the next day or so.

Could've been worse . . . (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rolleyes.gif)

That's what Chris had on his last one when he was driving it away... It put out a hell of a smoke screen on the motorway so we took it straight back to the dealer and they changed out the pipe there and then.

I'm guessing it's a weak point as the one they put on was off of another car on the lot, so would already be aged.

The old one appears to be original so it's done pretty good.

The new one from eBay should be here Thursday but I won't have time to fit it until the weekend so I made a quick "repair" last night.

Duct tape FTW !!!

It's holding so far . . . . I'm keeping the revs below 2,000 which isn't a major problem as that's how I *tend* to drive her anyway.

She passed 245,000 last week . . now nudging 246,000 miles today . . .

I'm at the end of my current project tomorrow / Saturday so have booked a couple of days off for myself and the Mondeo to recover next week. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

She's due a service this month so I'm gonna get her cleaned on Monday, then do the service Tuesday / Wednesday when I'm off.

She needs another two hub caps, too. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/ebayanim.gif)

No issues to report except I've had a "noise" that sounds like a wheel bearing for the last 7 months . . . It's not a wheel bearing as it passed the MoT and I've recently jacked her up to re-check the bearings.

It's road-speed dependent, not engine rev dependent, so the only other thing I can think of is maybe a worn driveshaft ??

I may take her to the garage and let someone have a look next week, too . . .

My old Mondeo only used to make a 'bearing-like' noise on this one section of road around one particular corner, everywhere else it was okay. I didn't find out what it was and I just drove it as it was.

I think driveshafts are a good possibility, although it could still the wheel bearing with the weight on it at a certain angle and speed, it just maybe only slightly worn and not worn enough to show when you test it (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

I got a record 689 miles out of the last tank (after the oil change) !!!  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/shame.gif)

. . And it was far from an ideal example . . . probably barely half the mileage was "longer" journeys (35-odd mile trips to Hatfield) . . . . the rest being made up of 3-mile runs to the town centre or 14-mile trips to work.

Admittedly, I was very low on diesel when I filled up but I tend to average 620-650 per tank . . . and that's normally made up of longer journeys.

The service has nearly paid for itself !   (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rofls.gif)

It's with a heavy heart that I must report that I believe my Mondeo is critically ill.

I've had a "noise" since before her MoT, last December, but only in the last couple of months has it been loud enough to work out roughly where it was coming from.

It seems to be the front nearside so I hoped wheel bearing, although it didn't sound quite like one . . . It wasn't, I checked and it was fine.

Maybe drive shaft, then ?

The drive shaft does have a bearing, apparently, but this is on the other side . . . I took her to the garage yesterday and after a test drive and a few tests, the verdict was gearbox.

I also have a buggered rear shock, too (nothing major in itself).

A unknown secondhand gearbox will be around £100, labour at least £300.

Shocks will be £50, labour around £80.

Tax and MoT run out at the end of December.

She passed 249,000 miles yesterday.

I think the plan will be to re-new my AA membership and try to get her to December.

Maybe Santa will buy me something nice for Christmas.  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Interesting.

I've had a noise which is almost certainly the gearbox for a while, now . . .

But I've also had a "slight" blow in the exhaust . . . and a loud turbo-wizz noise and banging from the rear of the car.

Meh, it's dying, I thought but noticed, while rocking the car to check the water level in Belgium last week that there was a light metallic knocking noise.

Long story short, I had a look yesterday and it turns out that the "slight" blow is actually a completely severed pipe, just forward of the flexi.

Good news is that the part is £23 including postage and that this is the cause of the knocking noises from the rear and likely to be the cause of the turbo noise, too.

I was going to bodge it but figured with the time, hassle and effort, I may as well stump up and buy the new bit of pipe.

It should be coming from eBay this week so fingers crossed It's just the gearbox issue I'm left with.

The original diagnosis of the rear shocks causing the noise at the rear, I think, isn't the case . . . I reckon it's been like that for years and it's never caused any issue but we'll see.

Take it you sorted the exhaust / bumper out?
Title: I'm a MONDEO MAN, now !!!
Post by: Roadkill on September 09, 2014, 08:21:31 am
Yeah . . Kind of.

I fitted the new flexi-section . . it was a cheap pattern-part so fitted great at one end but crap the other . . . There's a little blow but not enough to bother me . . .

I think it was the new section that caused the failure on the obviously weakened bit at the back.

For those who didn't see on FB, on Saturday night while driving home the rear box broke off, fell and managed to jam into the block-paved road and rip-off most of the back bumper !!

Thankfully the outer skin is plastic, so I managed to hammer (and kick) it about 90% back into shape . . . There's a few cracks in the paint, now, too.

So now the exhaust ends just behind the rear wheels and, without the last hanger, rattles on the rear axle like a muthaf*cka !

I can't justify further expense or time at the moment so temporarily wrapped rubber sheet over the axle to deaden the noise.

I run her to Liverpool yesterday and it's sounding like the rubber needs replacing already !

The back box is only £35 or so but it looks like you have to cut the old pipe off and sleeve the new section further back (as the original rear section is half the length of the car).

I really don't have the time at the moment so it's gonna have to wait.

I've still not fitted a new back box . . . the back, severed pipe, is rattling around a lot but I have the stereo up pretty loud, anyway to hide the ever increasing noise from the gearbox !!!

I had a blow-out last week . . . .

I've put just over a thousand mile on the spare so far . . . (getting my money's worth) . . I'm kinda expecting the gearbox to blow up any day so am reluctant to spend too much money !!

She's juddering a tiny bit under light-to-medium acceleration . . . this happens fairly periodically so I've picked up some injector cleaner (£3) which resolves this.

She passed the 255,000 mile-point on Friday . . I'm not sure how much further the gearbox will hold out . . . I'm hoping December (when the tax and MoT run out) at least but . . . (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

On the plus side, with all the runs up to Liverpool I've been doing recently she's been achieving some epic MPG - especially for an old girl.

. . It must be the skinny tyre on the front !!! (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rofls.gif)

She's filthy and looking really sorry for herself, now, but she's still going . . . Currently loaded up with over 1/4 tonne of site tools in the boot (which I bought back from Liverpool on Thursday and are going to Dagenham today) . . . Who knows . . . she may see 2015 yet.

Mini update . . . She passed the 265,000 mile mark last week and is still as noisy as hell.

If she broke down and died tonight I wouldn't be surprised !

I got another puncture and while putting the spare on stripped one of the wheel nuts (which are fooked, BTW, totally worn-out, probably due to the excessive amount of times the wheels have come off for new brakes/pad/tyres etc . . ) so a new set of wheel nuts are on order before getting the tyre repaired/replaced (it's near the mark).

Not often your wheel nuts wear out, but after so many miles it can be forgiven, I suppose . . . !

That spring-shaped bit is actually the threaded part of the nut I pealed off the stud !!!

Well, with tax due at the end of the month, the noise from the front end now almost deafening and a rattling from the back (as well as being only a few miles shy of 270,000) I was ready to sell the old girl but thought I'd give her one more chance.

I had a look over the weekend and discovered that the "noise" had been misdiagnosed before and the fix could be a lot easier (and cheaper) than anticipated.

So I took her to the garage this morning.

The "noise" turns out to be a failed wheel bearing (so really cheap and easy to fix) . . . that said the way it'd failed was "weird, so probably never sounded or felt like a wheel bearing going" (his words, not mine).

Next up was the rattling from the back.

Turns out that both my rear shocks are beyond dead (not surprising considering what I regular put the car through AND the fact that they told me they were knackered about 3 years ago !!!

Although, I said, that wasn't the noise I'd heard from the back . . .

2 minutes of looking and both the main rear-arm bushes have failed (as in collapsed !!).  Got money's worth, for sure.

I've also got a rear flexi brake line that's at the point of failure so have left the car with them.

I had a budget of £500 in mind as, basically, if I had to pick up a cheap snotter to get me by that'd be the minimum I'd end up spending . . . . That said, I've told them no more than £400 so should be good . . . . Plus this way there's a chance that the engine will get to 300,000 miles.

if you're still interested in mine.

Should have said that before I spent £364 fixing mine - I'm gunning for 300K, now !

Picked up last night and WOW.  Totally different.

Obviously the noise which I thought (and was told) was the gearbox (and so terminal) is now gone . . . Without realising it I crept up to 90+mph on the bypass this morning and even then the car was whisper quiet, smooth and comfortable.

The rear shocks have helped a lot.  It definitely feels better now then it did even when I first bought it over 4 years ago.

It handles better, brakes better - everything reacts better and smoother.  I'm very happy (especially as my expenses for this month alone covered the repairs)

The garage even topped up my washer fluid.

I'm happy, the Mondy literally feels as good as new . . . The various issues have caused two tyres to become worn un-even so they'll be next on the list (although not urgent).

She's due a service in July so that's next . . . . Once I've finished doing some work in the garden I'll even then get her cleaned !!!!

Fair enough. Though I only found out yesterday. 😉

I had ulterior motives . . . I'd ran out of my creosote/engine oil mix the night before and needed some to continue on a garden-related project.

If I hadn't have run out of that, I'd have pushed it another month or two.  :P

Passed 275,000 miles this morning . . . . Mileage has been quite light recently as I had one project at Heathrow but the other just round the corner in M.K.

Next project is in Crawley (Gatwick) so the mileage will be racking up pretty quick on the run-up to Christmas.

Passed the 280,000 mark a few days ago.

Replaced 2 tyres due to wear and tear in late November, then got a puncture in another so replaced that last week (the tread was fairly low so didn't bother asking for it to be fixed).

Got some grumbles from the front - I suspect a wheel bearing is on its way out (again) - think I had a dud fitted before.  :smirk:

ABS light came on last week . . . the ABS kicks in for the first few braking operations (ABS light off), then the ABS light comes on and the braking returns to "normal" . . . although I'm guessing it wouldn't come on in a full-on emergency stop.

Not keen on letting a garage plug her in to tell me whatever they want to say so have ordered a OBD-2 fault reader off of eBay for £7.95 . . . never realised they were so cheap !

MoT's due in late December so need to get this resolved pretty quick (especially with the bad weather potentially round the corner).

Mine had that, turned out to be a broken wire on one of the rear speed sensors.  Think it was a common fault on the Mondeo.

IIRC My cheapie OBD2 Reader didn't pick up on the fault though.. Probably only has the common, cross OEM codes.  I had to use some Jag diagnostics software and CANayzer from work to read that one.

I'd go with what Chris said, it sounds like one of the wheel speed sensors isn't reading speed pulses (probably a poor or corroded connection). This means that when you apply the brake the ABS system thinks that a wheel is locked up and intervenes. If the light only comes on around braking events then that's just the car saying, woh there buddy, I had to step in there to calm it down a bit as the road is wetter than an otter's pocket...
Title: Re: I'm a MONDEO MAN, now !!!
Post by: Roadkill on December 17, 2015, 12:40:07 pm
Yeah, I'd read about the rear sensors . . . apparently the first thing to do is check the connectors (that are under the rear seat).

The ABS kicks in a few times before the light comes on, once the light is illuminated (it stays on), the brakes work "normally" (I suspect the ABS is actually disabled at this point).

I know what you're saying, though . . . I don't pretend to understand any of the electrical side of how it operates but I do fully understand the mechanical principle.  It's either going to be a dodgy connector, failed sensor or broken/separated ABS ring.

If it was warm and sunny, I'd be out there at lunch having a look but it's not, so I'm waiting for the code read to hopefully at least point me to the correct corner !

:P

I have always found the cheap OBD readers useless for 'older' cars.

Try the check on the speed sensors as Incursus says, if that does not show anything obvious, then perhaps ask a buddy at a garage to plug it in to a professional reader?

I know someone in Fenny Stratford who will happily do it for beer money if you need them.

Took the Mondeo to Andy's this morning in the end . . . didn't give them any notice, just showed up at 8am and they looked at it almost straight away.

I left it with them but the ABS is now sorted (buggered sensor), another wheel bearing fitted (I think that makes all 4, now), a couple of bulbs and she's all MoT'ed, too.

All-in £300.  :(

A bit more than I wanted to pay, but I can't complain . . .

In fairness I could've investigated the ABS issue further myself and probably saved £100 but every chance I got it was pi$$ing down with rain and didn't fancy hunting all four corners of the car for hours in that.

It didn't help that both the MoT and Tax was due at the same time (well planned ABS issue, well planned) !

288,000 miles but she's got issues.

Got a clunking from the back . . sounded like a cracked spring but checked and can't see anything . . . not too fussed - it's just a bit irritating.

Worse, though, is an overall loss of power (I'd guess around 10-15%) and she's going into limp mode when pulling hard (up hill or over-taking from "lower speeds" in 6th gear).

From what I've read, it's sounding like sticking vanes inside the turbo . . . this can be due to gunk build-up (likely as I drive it like a granddad) or due to it being worn out (also likely owing to the mileage).

I get a bonus from work on payday so a replacement car is feasible but I'd ear-marked that money for cool stuff . . . not a replacement daily.  :can:

Will need to investigate . . . . :chiny:

Time for that pickup truck then.

Tempting.  It really is but I've ear-marked my bonus money for the Cadillac's carburetors plus I'm now hell-bent that I want to get 300,000 miles out of the Mondeo !!!!

O.K, so on Tuesday night I started randomly taking bits off around the turbo . . . got about 45 mins in when I realised the turbo is cast into the exhaust manifold meaning the whole thing has to come off and that, in order to get that massive lump out, a whole load of other stuff needs to be removed to make way . . . . .

F-U-C-K   T-H-A-T, thought I.  She'll go to the scrap yard before I do all that.

I reckoned I could split the turbo in situ (what did I have to lose ?) so pushed on.

Long story (very long story) short, yes, it's possible to do this and yes, it's quicker, it's an utter ball ache to say the least.

I cracked open the turbo expecting to find gunk galore on the "actuator ring" (that's my name for it) which drives the 11 "variable vane thingy-me-bobs" (again, my name for them).

But no.

No gunk.  Worse, probably . . . it was dry and sooty in there and the ring (when operated by hand) was stiff and difficult to turn.

At least there's an obvious issue, so I pumped the fekker full of WD40 to shift the soot.  Also cleaned the exhaust side of the "whirrly bit" (my name for it).

Unfortunately the "actuator ring", once lubricated is prone to dropping out and taking with it the 3 "tiny little cotton-reel roller-bearing wotsits" (my name) . . . These wotsits space the ring away from the face of the casting correctly so are fairly critical.  :)

I lost one, then found it, then lost another while re-assembling (and found it again).

In the end I used bearing grease to effectively stick them in place while I reassembled it.  The theory worked and I got it all back together and started her up without any immediate codes, flashing warning lights or explosions.

The cost :

The "outlay" was pennies in WD40, a washer from stock to replace one I lost and about 3 hours time.

The verdict :

A definite improvement in low-speed response, better overall response and generally an increase in power - that said it's not as good as it was a year ago (but I must remember her age and mileage).

I purposely tested her in high load conditions, changing into 6th gear at 40mph and stamping on the accelerator . . . . she fought for about 5 seconds before going into limp-mode (fair enough, as it was a unlikely demand).  I then did a much more likely test, changing into 6th at 50mph and applying about 75% throttle.  This time she managed it without issue.

I put 250 miles on her yesterday without incident.

I don't think this has cured the problem (clearly the turbo is very worn) but it's certainly improved the situation . . . . whether it's improved it enough to get me another 12,000 I can't say.

No photos as it was utterly p!ssing down with rain Tuesday night and I was just concentrating on getting it done.

The saga continues !!!!

The issue with the turbo hasn't gone away . . .

It did get better, but has slowly returned.  I can normally prevent it from going into limp mode by changing how I accelerate under load but it's a PITA for sure.  I've got about 6 months left MoT so was planning to push it to the end of the year (this should get me to 300,000 miles, too) but I don't know . . .

Late last week the high pressure hose on the power steering failed, ejaculating P/S fluid everywhere (!!!).  Thankfully it happened at the office so I only had to drive it 16 miles home without P/S.
I ordered a second hand pipe of eBay (£10 + £3 P&P), finished fitting it last night (about 90 minutes off-and-on) and filled it up.  Seems O.K, it's noisy at full lock but it's still working air out (plus the pump was running dry for nearly an hour).

Meh.  :pass:

I did spend a few minutes last night wiping over the engine / covers as the P/S fluid covered everything !

(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/20160615_180011_zpsrdokcsml.jpg) (http://s30.photobucket.com/user/Roadkill-Auto/media/20160615_180011_zpsrdokcsml.jpg.html)

The tax is out at the end of this month so the plan is to see how she's behaving for the next week after which she'll either be sold/part-ex'd or kept (depending how the week goes !!!)
Title: Re: I'm a MONDEO MAN, now !!!
Post by: Roadkill on June 30, 2016, 10:09:52 am
Oddly enough, since putting her back together and re-fitting the battery (I had to remove it while I did the P/S hose) she's behaved much better ?? ??

:pass:

She's only gone into "limp mode" once since - that's two weeks whereas it was happening nearly every day (sometimes twice a day !) before.

:chiny:

Dunno, don't care.

She passed 290,000 yesterday so I'm determined to reach the big 3-0-0-0-0-0 now !!!

Onward !!!!!!!!

As it just seems to be me posting on here now, I'll continue entertaining myself . . . . :can:

After going nearly 2 weeks with only one "Limp mode" occurrence, I re-taxed her this month til the end of the year.

Since then she's gone into limp mode almost daily - sometimes up to 3 times a day !!!  :rtfm:

F**king typical.

Still, I'm pushing on.

In a bizarre side-effect - I'm guessing caused by the even gentler way I'm driving her now - this happened :

(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/20160706_133854_zpsjsbclu0k.jpg) (http://s30.photobucket.com/user/Roadkill-Auto/media/20160706_133854_zpsjsbclu0k.jpg.html)

67.9 (Average) MPG !!!

Even if you take it with a generous pinch of salt, that's still pretty f*cking amazing for the old girl.

She's sitting at 291K today, with around 1000 miles scheduled for next week alone - wish us luck !!!
