Title: Cunning Jeep Cherokee XJ
Post by: Cunning Plan on July 16, 2012, 09:09:22 am
Thought I should start a thread for my Cherokee XJ.

It's a '99/00 2.5TD Orvis editon, stock.

Bought it from the nicest, most genuine old boy ever. A total pleasure buying the vehicle for a change instead of hassle. Also, after doing nearly 23k on it so far, everything he told me about the Cherokee was true, which as most people know from buying second-hand cars, is very rare.

Originally bought it as a run about as it was local and my '97 1.8 petrol Ford Mondeo Estate had broke, but the more I drove it, the more I liked it. The cruise control, air conditioning, electric windows, comfortable seats and nice cruising driving position also help.

I do a lot of miles, about 22k usually and I was worried about the MPG, but because of the type of roads I usually travel on and speed I tend to keep do, I average 35mpg, which is only a couple less than my old, lighter Ford Mondeo. So it worked out just about feasible.

This is what I've done to it so far:

Recent MOT!

Had the smallest fail and advisory sheet on the Cherokee against any other car I've had considering the age, weight and miles it is doing!

Small bit of welding was needed around the O/S driver's sill, near the seat-belt mounting and it went through!

A couple of advisories about small oil leaks on axles and a tyre.

I've done nearly 23k in it now!

I do like the Jeeps . . . Nice size and good position on the road.

Surprisingly I found my 4.0L one sluggish . . . It seemed to be running fine but just didn't seem to have any legs . . .

The TD is agricultural being an old indirect design, but as long as you let the gears do the work it chugs along and has loads of torque. The turbo is great for over-taking in 5th gear from 40 and accelerate to 70/75.

I know for the commuting I'm doing it would be a better idea to have a Diesel Mondeo for fuel econonmy, but I like the Cherokee and the MPG isn't that far different from the petrol Mondeo, so as long as it works, I'll use it.

I've never driven the 4L petrol so can't really compare.

Fatter spoke alloy wheels that are wider and bigger, front spot-lights integrated into the bumper and heated mirrors I think. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

@Andy

Yup, that's it! I was a bit dissapointed compared to the retractable cover in my old Mondeo estate, but it does the job (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

Weird thing is, it looks like a prototype cover doesnt it? The older Cherokees have a proper retractable cover, the same as the Grand Cherokees, but for some reason the later models have thiia cheap cover. I assume it was a cost saving excersise. :(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/confused.gif)

Had to give the Cherokee a bit of love.

New rear-plate bulbs and some stainless screws donated from the bus as the old ones were so corroded, they weren't going to come out another time.

Also topped up the Diffs and Axles along with the other levels. One good thing about a 4x4 is you don't need to jack it up to get underneath!

I replaced mine in my Mondeo after one split down the M40. Replaced it with bog standard fuel line and then jubilee'd it at either end. Never had any issues, think I had it for 2 years after that.

I'm on about the little pipes that feed between the injectors. Been googling for an image, but can't find one that gives enough detail.

They're about 5-6" long and just loop from one injector to the next. Then there is a blanked off one at the end.

I think the fuel line had an od of about 1/2" maybe 5/8" but easily done up. Felt I had to after how much just a hair line fracture in the previous hose had sprayed all over the bay.

Nothing beats that fear of turning the blower on and just smelling diesel! (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/shame.gif)

Yup, we are talking about the same thing.

Still no idea how you got a jubilee clip on though as there doesn't seem like there would be enough space between the injector and the pipe! (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/huh.gif)

I miss my local scrappy! Had many a fun time going round our one with mates hooking bits off cars, sometimes having a look and seeing how bits worked.

Place burnt to the ground about 5 years ago and then they ended up getting rid of all the cars and clearing the site. Now have to go to a place like Martin says where they pick the part for you, can't see the car yourself. Dead boring.

Good work there CP. That grip tape idea is a treat! Off Jeep topic, but on the mondys you can get chrome strips that go along there to add some bling factor! (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rolleyes.gif)

Yep, the ones I called around me were exactly that. You go to a counter to buy the item which they have just torn from the vehicle and charge almost as much as a new part.

Yah the tape really suits 'utility' vehicles. I don't think it would work for other car-types as much.

A common problem on the 2.5TD Cherokee is the number 1 injector. It has a wire coming from it which sends a signal from the position sensor in the injector to the ECU. When it stops sending a signal, the engine goes into a crude limp-mode and limits revs to 2k rpm.

A very long time ago, I learnt this because it went into limp mode. I detached the wire from everything else and played with it, reconnected it and for 15k miles, it has been fine. However, today it is now back in limp-mode. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/down.gif)

I wonder if the really cold weather this morning has anything to do with it. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif) I guess it could have got some moisture on the delecate connection..

So, I have the special injector socket on order and I need to find a reasonable Jeep breakers for one of these:

I think the position sensor on the number 1 injector is faulty. It will probably be more intermittent now.

I'll keep looking for a replacement injector.

I'm too lazy to rotate tyres but yours are certainly holding up well . . . I normally get about 25000-35000 outta mine but my driving is 80% motorway.

Nice fix . . .

Well spotted and you're right, it has, but, it is still held securely, so, as I understand it should not effect the MOT..

List of tasks to do before the MOT:

[10%] Tank Fixing Strap (currently still with the engineer being repaired ready for refitting).
[0%] Check Levels
[0%] Window Wash
[0%] Top Up Diffs
[0%] Grease Front Ball-Joints
[0%] Check front shock leaks
[0%] Check Lights

Stop it  :P

Do you think it will fail like that? My understanding is that if the item is securely fixed, or, there is movement within reason, it will pass.

Otherwise, I will have to also do the anti-roll-bar bushes, AGAIN, becuase the ones I have put on have desintegrated and are cracked again. I only installed them, last year I think?! :rasp:

The roll bar is solid though, no movement in it. :chiny:

Shit quality parts   :rtfm:

I'll just order another clamp, it is an easy job that is not worth failing on.

I was going to buy the U-Clamp online as it is usually cheaper, but it would not have arrived in time. Have you ever used Parrs Parts near the Rugby Stadium? They were very helpful, one of the guys there couldn't find the awkuardly sized clamp to start with and went though parts manuals to find it, then called me back to let me know he found it and ordered one in for me, which was £2.34 inc. VAT, so around the same price as online.

Recommended.
