4ky of marris otter
1/2 of caramalt
and 1 kg of crystal malt ...to give it a nice brown colour...

here are the grains mashing[infusing like a teabag]
at 67 deg for 90 mins...they smell grrrrreeat

That's hardcore brewing.  Not sure If I wanna go that far, yet.

I'm guessing you need slightly more serious equipment for "doing it from scratch" ??

thats almost true ..(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

tbh...it needs alot more time...
and has become a hobby involving forums and meeting in pubs...(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

its much more than it takes to open a can of goo and adding water to it....(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)  although i have still done that with some stout...

the only other things i needed was a pot and a heat source...
it was all set up for around £70

but the difference is noticeable..(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/beavisnbutthead.gif) its like having a pukka pie ...which is alright in a rush or having a homemade steak and ale pie made with fresh ingredients...(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

the other advantage [in the long term] is that the cost of an all grain brewing is around £8 for 5 gallons ...(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

i will add the pics of the process as i go along...(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

''Gaggin for it''
is quite strong dark and hoppy beer ,

heres a piccy of it with the hop bags draining after the boil (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

its been outside in the garage for a couple of days and is clearing,
 but a bit slowly ,
im going to bottle it this weekend and then let it carbonate over the week,

it will probably take a few weeks to get to its best as this type of beer does..

but i will be bringing a good few pints along to brighton next weekend (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/beavisnbutthead.gif)

Gave a bottle of mine to Katie's step dad, (Nobby the farmer, likes his Ales)   he said it was nice but where's the label (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rolleyes.gif)

No head either but I suppose there wouldn't be as it was bottled after fermentation  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

Plenty of damn head when I was trying to fill the damn bottles! (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

ive got a feeling this is going to be a great beer,
when its had time to condition,
it was only 1 week in the bottle so not really at its best,

i had a tester from the keg last nite and it was clearer
but then it hadn't been on a 140 mille journey,(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

this beer wont be a bright beer as it has quite a bit of roasted barley in it,

i will be keeping a few bottles in a dark place until xmas then it should be excellent

im now thinking of brewing 6 gallons of a golden ipa to use my second keg, (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

tbh
as we dont drink a lot i can keep a 5/6 gallon keg for over 3 months so..(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/cool.gif)
with two on the go i will have enough beer for this year...(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

ah it made it back then...(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

you can actually do small amounts of all grain beer ie 1 gallon batches which can be easier than my 5-6 gallons...(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

How big a cafetiere?  I have a 1 cup and a 3 cup..

Edit: Lot of different hops on that site any particular type you recommend?

Post by: art b on October 15, 2013, 08:09:20 pm
it depends on how big ya cups are...(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

i make around a pint..(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

fuggles and goldings are traditional english hops
or you could try a more aromatic citrus type

they are vacuum packed and keep forever in the freezer...(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

Ta.

I guess it's worth making a few cups of tea with various combinations/ratios eg 50% fuggles, 50% goldings and having a taste test before dumping a pint of it in my precious beer (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

Maybe mix in a bit of beer from the last brew (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

the hop tea is very hoppy surprisingly...
so its hard to tell ....
i use around 30g of hops, it gives taste and some aroma that kits are missing...
its quite an easy method..
you can also dry hop your beer , the hops are added to the fermenting beer for around a week in a suitable sock type bag,
they float on the top and release oils that are lost when boiling...(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Yeah that's why I was thinking of "watering" it down with a beer.  I'll give it ago anyway.

Mr RK!  Fancy getting a bit Hoppy and splitting the shipping cost for some Hops?

http://www.themaltmiller.co.uk/index.php?_a=viewCat&catId=33

Paying £5 postage on £6 worth of Hops is a bit high for an experiment (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

7 months on ,,
i opened a bottle of ''gaggin for it'' tonight,
it was a lot clearer than the ones we had at brighton,
well it was only a week in the bottle,
i also have a 2 litre bottle of it thats still dark brown (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

it now tastes quite nutty and has a bitter hop finish like a timothy taylor....(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

ive also brewed another AG beer today....(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/beavisnbutthead.gif)

a beer with only light malts and 150g of english fuggle hops ...(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)
