is it a bronze age design ...

Just like the garage extension it's fundamentally built on timber posts set in concrete pads.  The garage extension has a concrete base (separate from the frame) and polystyrene and timber over that.  The shed will be much more basic.  The floor will be sat on batons attached to the walls (that are attached to the posts).

This way there's no need for large bases and the build is accelerated.

Anyway.

The site.  The new shed will attach to the garage extension to add stability, reduce costs and materials and speed up build time.

The overall sizes are 4.9m long, 1.4m deep and about 2.25m high.

Four post holes dug :

Next the three main panels were built inside the conservatory (they just about fitted through the double-doors !)

Temporary bracing was used to ensure the panels were square :

Once square, they were clad . . .

And taken outside to be treated to 2 coats of 50/50 creosote substitute and 25,000-mile used diesel oil.

Recycling the "Man" way.  Lovely.

One of the panels was screwed to the garage, then a post screwed to it, then a further panel and post attached to that to make up the rear wall.
The last panel (and another post) was screwed to the middle post of the garage to form the first part of the front wall.

All posts and panels were braced and packed before it got too dark to do any more . . . .

Next I made up the framework for the next part of the front wall.  At this stage I didn't want it clad as I haven't decided on a door yet so wanted to keep my options open . . . this made making it and fitting it bloody awkward . . . !

But in the end it went in and all the posts were plumbed, the levels checked and diagonal measurements taken to ensure everything was ready for concrete.

The side wall was made entirely in-situ as all the cladding pieces needed to be angle-cut on the ends (as that wall isn't square - was planned not to be) . . .

Again everything which will see the elements was treated.

Next up was the roof.  38mm particle boards, cut and screwed in place.

This is where it was first thing this morning :

Since then I've put the underlay on for the roof felt and started re-jigging the guttering . . .

The plan for tomorrow is to get the roof felting finished so it's weather proof.

Then the floor can go in . . . .

O.K, so as my phone was telling me that Monday to Wednesday this week was going to be torrential down pours I decided that the roof needed to be 100% finished, as did the guttering.

I finished off the guttering on Saturday morning and started the cap sheet in the afternoon . . .

I ran out of clout nails so just had to go back up there last night to finish off.

The garage extension now half flows onto the shed roof (which flows into its own guttering) and the other half flows into its original, modified, guttering (that then connects with the shed guttering below).  All then goes down and then across and then through a pipe under the garage extension to an existing soak-away.

And here's the roof.  Just slightly lower than the garage extension to allow me to tuck the cap sheet under the garage roof's overhang.

Thanks to my Dad and Ian for providing the extra pair of hands when required.

Next stage is to finish off a bit of log-rolling to enlarge a raised flower bed to get rid of the various buckets and piles of earth dotted around the garden . . . . . then the shed's floor . . .

(Will be finished this evening)

I also won a second-hand set of uPVC french doors off ebay that fit the opening I have in the side exactly.

It'll mean I can get BIG items in and out easily (like the seats from the Caddy when I start the resto) . . also, as they're pre-hung, I won't have to worry about drafts or leaks !!

Should be picking them up next week.

Yeah, about 15mm rise from front to back.

Next stage is to finish off a bit of log-rolling to enlarge a raised flower bed to get rid of the various buckets and piles of earth dotted around the garden . . . . .

Got this bit finished which then enabled me to have a good tidy up and clear some room.

Next stage was running the wiring.  Using a penned-on-wall sketch provided by Ian I got most of it run Saturday . . . with the final bits, connection and testing Sunday.

. . . . . then the shed's floor . . .

DPM first . . . I wasn't going to bother but for £20 it'd be daft not too.  The ground was swept and any hard or sharp stones hammered in.  Then I sprinkled some sand over the area to further protect the DPM.

After the DPM came 50mm of Polystyrene . . . again, I wasn't going to bother but I'd probably regret it if I didn't . . . .

Then the perimeter framework for the decking . . . . then the decking.

The floor's all done, now and looking good.

Next up is the ceiling.  I was going to leave this as just timber but I think condensation will be an issue so it's getting 25mm of polystyrene then a layer of plasterboard.

Then the walls.  Again, 25mm of polystyrene, finished with plasterboard.

I should be picking up the doors this week, too . . . so they'll be fitted as soon as they're available.

Thanks to Ian for the help with the electrics and the extra pair of hands with the floor boards.

I finished off the little enclosure for the outside sockets earlier . . . They're of a suitable IP rating that they shouldn't need it but they just looked too exposed as they were.

No further progress as yet . . although the insulation for the walls and ceiling should be being delivered today . . . . (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

How would you connect the wiring for the switch without one ??

heres 3 methods...(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

1
you run your lighting feed to the switch, then up to the fitting,
lives into the switch and neutrals joined into a connecter inside the box,

2
lighting cable to the fitting and a wire down to the switch ,links made in the fitting,

3
what i would have done...(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

to save running a lighting curciut into the shed...

run a cable from the nearest socket,
into a fused spur used as the as the light switch,
then run up to the light,

Funny you should say that . . . Both lights and power spur off of the mains as we couldn't get to the lighting ring but managed to get to the mains feed for the sockets in the garage.

Can't remember what the sockets are . . . don't think they're 32A, though . . they're not that high.

Sounds like the simplest fix would be a fused switch, then ?

We put the Pig to work last night carrying 11 sheets of 2400x1200x12.5 plasterboard for the shed.

With the doors delayed the plan is to concentrate on getting the insulation installed and plasterboard fitted (where I can) this weekend.

I also intend to remove the window in the garage that looks into the new shed.  The plan is to plasterboard this inside the garage to mount my P.C's monitor to the wall (to clear some desk space).

I've also got some more back garden mods to do, too.  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/diy.gif)

I've another cool project coming up soon, that's gonna be fun . . . I need to pick up some materials for it next week (or before) but I'm really looking forward to getting started on it (It's part of a bigger non-auto project hopefully happening next year)

Pretty good progress made over the weekend.

Unfortunately not too many pictures.  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Got the lower noggings fitted and the DPM trimmed back on Saturday morning.

On Saturday afternoon Ian assisted in getting the 25mm polystyrene fitted to the walls and ceiling.

Here's a pic (taken through garage window so apologies for the reflection)

After that we got some of the plasterboard cut and fitted and got to the point we'd need to turn the power off to fit the boards around the sockets so finished off by removing the window between the garage and the shed.

Sunday saw the plasterboard 90% finished on the walls (I can't fit the last bits until the doors are installed) and the ceiling plasterboard all done.

Tonight's job will be putting the rest of the screws in the plasterboard and start thinking about skrimming and filling the joints.

I really did consider it but under that window is where my P.C sits and to enter the shed from there I would effectively need to remove my P.C, phone, sockets, speakers and sub (they'd be homeless as on the other end of the bench is the sink).
Also on the wall on the shed side I intend to mount shelves and put in a heavy-duty bench.

Basically the extra benefit of that access is nothing compared to the extra work and loss of wall space.

EDIT - Besides, it's now plasterboarded over.

Did you use tape or mesh for the jointing? (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif) Looks tidy (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

Skrim or Scrim they call it.

Yeah, it's a self adhesive mesh.  It won't stay stuck forever so I get the filler on as soon as.

It'll be tidy after the second going-over.  The first is basically just to fill the joints and cover the screw-heads.

How do you do the second 'going-over'? (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/huh.gif) Do you just expand the filled area a little and generally make it smoother like applying filler to a car?

I mean, you are not plastering the whole area are you?

Edit: Also, what are you using? Plaster or a filler?

Apologies for the questions, I am sure this was not a 'How to' thread (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/coat.gif) (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/blush.gif)

The point of the thread was partly a 'how to' to show how easy it is to do something like this.

I use a wickes ready mix compound (I'll post a picture later).

I put the first coat over the joints and screw heads to generally fill the holes ...... This tends to shrink back a bit so you'll never finish it in one go any way.  I then give it a quick sand down once it's dry, then one coat of watered down PVA before a second coat, concentrating on getting it as even and smooth as possible.

After that, sand again, PVA again and paint.

Due to the seller being apparently slightly retarded, I'm now losing a chunk of Saturday and picking up the doors tomorrow morning.

I plan to be back in MK for lunchtime so I can put Jensen down for his nap and get them fitted in the afternoon !

I've not bothered do anymore filling in the shed as it's taking nearly 2 days for the filler to dry properly . . . with the doors on I'll put a heater out there on low and accelerate that process.

Plus getting in / out will be easier as at the moment I'm having to climb underneath a piece of double-thick DPM !

Picked up the doors on my custom-built timber roof rack !

Did the job a treat and only cost £14 in materials (which I can re-use).

The doors are loosely in . . . I need to finish packing them properly but they're keeping 90% of the weather out, now.

I'll get a picture once I can get out there without getting soaked !!!

The two shorter (vertical in the pic) bits in the middle have small notches cut in them that located on the Mondeo's roof-rails.  I used 8 heavy duty cable ties to attach the frame to the roof, then 30m of nylon rope to secure the door to the frame and the frame back to the rails.

Having hung a exterior timber door, treat it with 4 coats of quality exterior treatment and still have it f*** up after a year, I knew It had to be uPVC.

I was looking for a single door (originally a white one from Wickes) but decided brown was the obvious choice.

I stumbled on this french door set - which just happened to fit the opening left in the shed at that time almost perfectly so it all made sense . . .

They set me back £209 (my budget was £150) which, although epic, was less than quarter what a decent new set would cost . . . Fitting and aftercare is simple and easy too, PLUS I can open both doors up meaning I can get some big (Cadillac sized) parts in there if need be.

As a plus, plus, they let in enough light so that you don't need any windows during the day, too.

(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/ebayanim.gif) FTW !! <-- Even if the seller did mess me about a little bit !

Yup.

If I'd know they were that "real" looking I would've gone for them for the rest of the house when I had the windows done years back instead of white (white's a ba$tard to keep clean) . . .

Will do. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

I was out there in the dark last night, braving the rain and thunder to get the timber infills cut, planed and fitted to the top and side of the frame.
This meant I could finish fixing the frame, rough seal it (from the inside) and fit the internal beading around the glass inside.

This morning I popped out before work and finished fitting the gutter and creosoted the timber I fitted last night.

Ian popped over in the afternoon and helped get the final bits of plasterboard fitted, too.

Next job is to continue filling . . . . . .

They do a 135* bend but the angle of the shed is more acute - more like 120* so it wouldn't have worked very well.

What I did do was put a ridge on that side under the felt so the water doesn't run off there, but is directed to the gutter on the long side.

Similar to how I connected the end of the garage . . . that runs perpendicular but is directly above the shed guttering so I trimmed the outlet back to a minimum and dropped it into the shed gutter.

Been slowly building up the filler in thin coats as it's taking a while to dry out there (no heating).

Went out there last night and hit it HARD with a sander !

90 minutes and a bucket of dust later it's nearly ready for paint . . . I've just got to hand-sand a couple of areas that were difficult to get to and have a hoover-up.

Bought the paint earlier (white) . . . I was gonna do something a *little* more interesting but resisted.

I need to get it done ASAP so I can shelf-it-out and start using it.

A bit disappointing on the progress front this weekend . . . I PVA'd the walls and ceiling then added the caulking to the edges and corners on Friday, hopefully ready for paint on Saturday.

Unfortunately, even with the heater on out there the caulk wasn't dry enough to take paint until last night . . . .

I've since put 2 coats of white on the walls and ceiling . . . I'll put a third on tonight and hopefully that'll be sufficient.

If all goes to plan I should be fitting the lights tomorrow night. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

I was toying with what to do with the floor . . . I was going to put carpet tiles down but think I'll be sensible and go with floor paint . . . .

I've had issues with filler and paint not drying . . . I've got a heater in there which is great but the downside is that it's producing condensation in the "cold spots"
Namely the screws that hold the ceiling plasterboard in place . . . they run through the insulation and the paint is still wet over them !!

I'll get the dehumidifier out there during the day tomorrow - I reckon that'll sort it.

Anyway.  Despite that I got a third coat of paint on last night . . . I'm 95% happy with it . . . there's a couple of minor patches but I'm not doing a fourth coat and I have to keep reminding myself that it is just a shed !!

I dropped in on my way back from site earlier (during daylight) and got the switches and sockets fixed and the lights fitted and tested.

I think I'm gonna go for floor paint as it's easier to repair and can just be periodically repainted to freshen it up.

My metal skirting board is going through the workshop as we speak so not much is likely to get done on the shed this weekend . . . .

I have to keep reminding myself that it's "just a shed" . . so instead of forking out more money on fancy coloured floor paint, I used some stuff left over from the shed at Ian and Vicky's.

It's actually not too bad . . . It's had three coats - which is plenty.

Last night I started getting the fixed shelves in . . . Basically 2 large shelves to take my boxes of "general garage junk", then a shelf above that to act as a workbench/dumping ground . . . Then, after that, a further, smaller shelf to house my 3 Beer Kegs (this is still to be fitted).

All of the materials for this part of the project were either acquired from work, left over from other jobs or out of my stock . . . so it's been nice and cheap !

I did have some nosings made that hammer-over the cut ends of the 38mm thick shelves . . . this will protect the edge and ensure the (unsupported) front edge remains rigid under load.

I need to get another made for the Beer shelf . . . .

I've been spending a few evenings in the back garden, helping to fully incorporate the shed in its new surroundings - but more on that later . . . .

Tonight's job will be to get the Beer Shelf up and fitted . . . then start fitting my metal skirting boards  . . . .

Nearly done !

Because I'm a perfectionist bit of a tart, I siliconed around all the fixed shelves last night at the back of the shed to stop crap getting caught down the back & sides . . . .

I also fitted the final nosing to the beer shelf . . . and also siliconed around the inside of the door and cleaned said doors (they were covered in dust after the sanding frenzy).

The only jobs left are to touch up a minor bit of paint damage in a couple of places and add a bit of silicone to the expansion gap on the floor in front of the doors . . .

Should get that done tonight, meaning I can start moving my crap in later on !!!

She's officially finished - In well UNDER 3 months !!!

What's going on ? (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/shame.gif)

Technically I want to add frosted film to the two doors which I've found for £12.99 but that was a last minute Idea and WILL get done within the next week or so (need to order it).

Apart from that I need to finish hooking up the Beer kegs but technically that falls under a different Project so it's done, finished and I've moved in !!!

ART - I twigged why the shelves look wonky . . . the ceiling (as viewed) is pitched downwards from left to right . . . The plasterboard is secured to the roof above through 25mm polystyrene so obviously has the same pitch.
Had me scratching my head for a minute or two until I got the kegs on the top shelf and it was obvious.

One's Recycling, one's rubbish . . . They've been there for years and when I had the idea of raising the beds around it I still wanted to be able to take them out (for cleaning etc . .) so have galvanised steel rings made that the bins neatly sit in.

The long-term plan is that I'll gravel the top of the bed in a couple of weeks, then plant plants around them in spring to camouflage them a bit.

I've cleared out about 1/3 of what was in the cupboards (so far) to allow me to re-jig them later on and do some repairs to one (the shelf got over-loaded).  I've got my floor back in the garage (which was seriously cluttered), I've cleared out some of the "bigger" tools from my roll-cab AND moved a few bits out of the Caddy's trunk.

I was surprised at how much crap I had !!  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/lol.gif)

The funny thing is that I've been clearing one of the back corners of the garden this weekend (for those of you that may remember - it was where the back of the Humber used to be - later the BBQ) . . .

. . . I got the old concrete slab out, the wall knocked down, its foundations broken up and got the area behind pretty-much dug-out last night . . .

. . The plan was to re-locate a swing-bench to that location but after seeing the space I've got in that corner (about 6' wide x 7' deep) I'm now thinking another shed would work better.

Yeah . . . a shed would work better . . . plus it would fit in nicely with my long-term master-plan !

The only thing I actually managed to do over Chrimbo was to clear this corner (I needed the earth to in-fill the new bed next to the new shed).

The space left is currently 1.5m wide and 1.6m deep back to the fence . . but I'm intending to increase that to 1.6m wide by 1.8m deep.

The said it won't be a huge shed (fairly normal by most standards) but it'll use an otherwise useless and previously un-used corner . . .

It'll be another "rapid" build . . . but I'm not sure just how rapid with Winter here ?

Here's the plot -

Actually, change that.

It makes a lot more sense to keep this latest shed idea "power free".

I'll probably locate the bulk-storage shelves to the newer shed, and put the other stuff in the existing shed where there's power already.

Should speed up the build even more.  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

Here's the plan -

It'll give me just enough room for 5 of the storage racks like the two I have in the current shed . . . .

Perfect !

Material prices are pretty good, too . . . It's the same design as the "Uber" shed but I'm replacing the (unseen) lower cladding panels with pre-galv steel which save a few quid and will, again, speed things up.

They'll be plasterboard to the walls and ceiling as before but this time I'll make the door myself instead of buying a uPVC one (partly to reduce costs and partly because I can't find a uPVC door to fit the gap).

I'll start buying materials come payday and hope for some nice-ish weather !

Well, I will, truly be Lord "two sheds" Roadkill soon, as I'll be buying materials either tonight or tomorrow and will go "into production" this weekend.

The plan is the same as that above except I've reduced the overall width by 35mm . . . (it'll suit the shelving lay-out better).

It'll be a rapid build but, with the weather, I'm not limiting myself too much . . . . as long as it's done for March-time that'll be O.K.

Big thanks to Ian on both Saturday and Sunday . . .

We got everything done on the list and were very lucky with the weather so I'm happy.

Saturday was spent cutting all the timbers and assembling the back panel and the two side panels.
Next these were assembled (in failing light) and then received their first coat of creosote/oil mix (in the freezing dark).

Sunday morning we were greeted with this 8-foot tall monster :

(Because of it's smaller size and the tight gap it fits in the plan was to lift this into place and not build in-situ as the other builds)

Next job was to fit the steel panels to the lower sections of the framework, plus final lower timbers.

After that the site was leveled and cleared . . .

Then the fence behind treated . . .

Then the post holes dug and the old log-roll removed . . .

The shed was treated to another coat of creosote/oil then, again in now failing light, man-handled into place in the corner . . .

I took this photo this morning . . .

It was too dark to start leveling it last night so this weekends plan is to get it square, level and plumb and then concrete the posts in place.

From there I'll start getting the front built . . . .

Had a relatively relaxed weekend on the shed building front but still managed to get everything on the list done.

Saturday's plan was simple . . . Level, plumb, square and concrete.

Ian came over and it went to plan . . . took a bit of effort to level it and keep the legs all plumb but in the end everything was within 1mm on my 1200mm spirit level so I was happy with that !

Squaring it up, again was an effort, but with a few swift hits we got it within 3mm or so, corner-to-corner, top-to-bottom, so again, damn near perfect.

Next job was to get the water and sludge out of the 4 post holes (great fun) before mixing and pouring the concrete.

Once the concrete was in I had to just hope there was no major rain over night . . . I did cover the concrete up but that end of the garden is the lowest so any downpour would've flooded the post holes !!

Turns out I was lucky . . . we did have some rain but not enough to affect the concrete.

This was taken Sunday morning when I checked the concrete :

Sunday I opted not to do anything early-on as it was bright and sunny so it made sense to allow the concrete to further harden before bashing the frame about putting in more timber . . . .

I came back after lunch and checked everything over - nothing had moved so all good.

I got the six vertical timbers cut and installed, then trimmed and fitted the cladding at the front.

After a tidy-up of the garden I put the first coat of creosote/oil on as it started to get dark.

These were taken this morning :

During the week I plan to get the timber cut for the roof and do a couple of "tip-runs".

The plan for next weekend, though, is primarily to back-fill the area to the sides and rear of the shed . . . . .

I got the back part in-filled (effort !!) . . . Looks good, though . . . not that I'll ever see it again !

I had to take the back panel out to do it (this was planned in the design so, apart from the weight of the panel, went pretty smoothly).

Completely forgot about it initially so only started it while it was getting dark on Saturday . . . Finished it at gone 7pm in the freezing cold.  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rolleyes.gif)

Weather on Sunday prevented me from getting the roof on - which really p!ssed me off . . . But I've pre-drilled the roof boards and cut the temporary overlay I'm putting on the roof until it's warm enough to felt it.

Hopefully it's clear one morning this weekend and I'll try to get out and get it on before work.

Eeeeeeeeeyyy (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Was out there at the crack of dawn this morning (or there abouts) . . . got the roof boards on and fixed and got some polythene pinned down over it.

Also started in-filling the sides (need to wait for the water to drain out of the mud before finishing these areas as it's more liquid than solid at the moment).

Good news is that all the buckets full of mud have now gone from the garden and the massive pile of excess gravel I had is now much, much smaller.

Forgot to say I also got some bits of wood fitted previously to strengthen the front and rear lower timbers (where the main cross-support beam will go for the floor).  As a side-effect it meant I could push the gravel up to the front of the shed and level around it.

Was busy doing "other stuff" yesterday but got a few hours in today . . .

Got some sand down and leveled in the base, got the DPM in and attached.  Then got the floor timbers in . . .

After that I laid the decking and fixed that in place (after running out of screws and buying some more . . ), then attached extra pieces of timber near the base that the plasterboard (and the steel skirting) will attach to.

I'm only putting polystyrene insulation on the underside of the roof in this one (to hopefully prevent condensation) and, as there's also no electrics in this one, the next job is plasterboard !

Just need to figure out how to get it here . . . . (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)
Title: Projects - Uber Shed and Square Shed

Not done an update for a bit . . . and I know how CP frets, so, here goes . . .

Last week Ian and I collected the Plasterboard and got it loose-fitted to the two sides, the back and the ceiling (complete with 25mm polystyrene on the underside of the roof).

This left me to spend a whole hour non-stop screwing in the shed (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif) (to finish fixing the boards).

After that I fitted some pre-galv angle to the sides and top of the door aperture . . . this will not only act as a door-stop (I'll be fitting spring-loaded hinges) but will also prevent the wind from forcing rain into the shed AND will give me a nice smooth, flat area to fit some draught-excluder to.

Once that was in place I fitted the plasterboard on the inside of the front face so it covered it up (from the inside).

Next I PVA'd the walls twice, added the skrim and started the filling process . . . .

It's difficult to get pictures as I have an off-cut of DPM covering the door opening at the moment and it's a ball-ache to keep un-pinning it . . .

I added the second (hopefully last) layer of filler last night so, assuming it's all dried, (unlikely) I'll start sanding this evening (Yay (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/smirk.gif) ).

Dunno, I was tinkering out in the garage from the age of 4 - I used to build little wooden toys from off-cuts my Dad produced . . . my Dad was always under orders from my Mum do be decorating, improving or building something . . . He never got a minute's rest !!

I suppose I picked up certain things then . . . that said my Dad tends to plan much more than me and also spends a lot more time working out how the final details will work before starting.

I'm far too impatient and tend to jump in the first chance I get, thinking about specific details as I become aware of them . . .

My Dad tends to tidy up regularly as well (almost certainly because of my Mum moaning about the dust !!) . . . I tend to spend every available minute doing the job and rarely tidy up much - when there's a project on the go, the work site looks like a bomb's hit 24/7 !!!

Disgusting . . . Just a week and it's nearly off the front page . . . Tut, tut. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/down.gif)

So, I've been a bit unwell off-and-on the last few weeks and last week generally didn't feel like doing F*** all after getting in from work.

That said I did have an epic sanding frenzy on Saturday, cleared and swept-up . . . then PVA'd the walls, ceiling and floor before then running a bead of adhesive around the (small) gaps in the edges of the plasterboard.

This was then these pictures were taken :

EDIT - I also finished in-filling and finishing the areas on the outside of the shed, too, which was a little bonus. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

After that I had to move a heater out there as the adhesive was taking a while to go-off.
Once it had I added a layer of caulk over the top to smooth things out, ready for painting.

Last night was the first in a while where I felt fine so I got two full coats of white paint on the walls and ceiling, ready for the last one tonight.

If all goes well I may even get a coat of paint on the floor, too, tonight.

Got the walls and ceiling finished, now.

Also got the third (and final) coat of paint on the floor last night, too.

I picked up the additional three plastic shelving units I'll need last night, too (these will join the first two from the first shed).

Tonight's job (if I get any time) will be to start cutting and fitting the steel skirting.

After that I'll silicone around the inside of the door opening (there's a tiny gap between the pre-galv angle and plasterboard).

Then I'll start getting the door made.  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

The door's got self-closing hinges so snaps-shut nicely and should easily resist high winds.

Since the last photo was taken I've packed the door a little to centralise it and have also made and fitted a handle.

Need to creosote the door next, obviously . . . then . . . (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

I was at Castle RK on Friday and I had a brief look at the 'sheds'. Both are extremely well built and blend into the garden, so they do not look out of place.

Thankfully the carpet tiles in the conservatory are fooked (not by me) so we're getting a carpet fitted next month - It'll become a "playroom" for Jensen, then.

Great work RK. Tell me though, how are you sealing the wood to stop the door expanding? I see you've 'creasoated' the exterior, but our biggest problem with out garden shed are the doors expanding when shut, then having to bust them open and plane them down.

Why have you done your door bracing that way around at the top? braces would normally run up from the hinges to keep the door in compression i.e like two 'Z's on top of each other?

Why

There's no quick way of answering that so I'll have to come back to it . . needless to say I have my reasoning . . .

Not got much time so I'll do a quick update . . . .

Second coat of creosote on the door, hinges adjusted further.  Plastic shelving units in and leveled (nice tight fit (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)).

Edit - Did some snagging inside where I caught the wall in one place and also siliconed around the inside of the door (between the plasterboard and the metal angles (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/pimp.gif))

Fitted the guttering and down pipe . . . the volume of water coming down the pipe will be minimal so I'm not worrying about connecting it to a soak-away . . .

Fitted nosing to protect the edge of the floor and repel the water . . also treated it to a new door mat (got a matching one for the other shed).

Have since put everything in there that i planned too . . . . I've still got about 15-20% capacity so that's good.

Remaining jobs are :

Fit Cabin Hook to door (to keep the door open when needed),
Fit 3 x pieces of log roll to the outside to "tie it in" with the existing,
Draw / have made / fit pre-galv plate to the inside of the door (not needed but I reckon it'll finished it off nicely),
Fit felt to roof (probably do in April as I'd prefer the temperatures to be warmer - you tend to get a better finish).

Nearly there. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Creosote, and 6mm gaps . . . (hence the metal anglel behind to stop the wind blowing the rain through).

It's still likely that it'll need some planing at some point . . . but I'm hoping the above, plus the fact that it's quite a substantial door will all help.

We'll see.  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

On a separate, but related note, I fitted the "frosted window film" to the first shed's french doors last night, too . . . that was the final outstanding job on that shed so technically I've finished that, now !

Well, that kinda highlights what kind of year I had last year . . . the Shed has had its temporary polythene roof cover for well over a year, now.

No leaks, though, despite its pikey looks.

Needless to say it's on the top of the list, after sorting out the garage to get that roof felted.

Another thing that's become apparent is that I'm using the Sheds . . . a lot.

That's good, of course, but it's become clear that the plastic shelving units in "Shed II" are not man enough for the items I need to store in there (I added a steel shelving bay in "Shed I" late last year to store Caddy bits on).

It's not just because they're a bit weak, most of the problem is because of the amount of pillars/legs there are supporting all the shelves . . . (see pictures above) . . it really hinders getting larger items in (think Christmas tree box, tent bag etc . . )

So -
I have an abundance of thick timber shelving available, left over from projects at work, that I intend to use in place of the plastic shelving units.

The plan is to have them free-spanning from front-to-back, meaning no legs or supports to get in the way so I can get some big stuff in there.

I also intend to install steel nosings to the front of the shelves (like in "Shed I") so they'll be solid and able to stand up to getting knocked about.

Not really a job I wanted to do but it won't take long, will cost maybe £15 (for screws and timber batons) and will make the second shed much, much more use-able.

I will wait til the weather gets a bit better first, though, I think.

P.S, If anyone wants 5 x plastic shelving units, barely a year old, in good, clean condition, let me know.

Finished fitting the 7 fixed shelves in the Shed (II) on Sunday . . . was gonna fit 8, but only had materials for 7 !! (I think it'll work better with 7, TBH, it's only my OCD complaining about the odd number !

I'll be adding a coat of varnish to the shelves to help seal them against leaks and spills (should've done this in the main shed on hindsight).

Pics to follow.

Got some varnish on the shelves last night . . . was planning to silicone the gaps around the shelves but don't think I'll bother - at most they're 2-3mm and in places zero.  I think, if anything, I'll add another coat of varnish and call it done.

Either way, this is what it looks like :

I also brought the steel skirting forward to suit the new lower shelves . . . . My door mat, by chance, still fits nicely in the gap.

I know what you're saying, and I did consider leaving it but my OCD wouldn't allow stuff "just on the floor" . . .

It got out of hand before and it ended up being stacked up so you couldn't get in let alone get to anything.  This way there's a definite line between organised (ie. on the shelves) and utter chaos (ie. on the floor) !!

It's fickle, but that's how I roll.

No, I totally understand.

I would have the bottom / floor for heavy items, so as long as the shelf can hold them, you have not lost functionality.

It is annoying when an item placed on-top of another, becomes another item and another item, after a while you are left with a mass of unorganised rubbish which means you cannot find what you are looking for or forget you have it in the first place.

True, I do need to have a bit of a sort-through still but there's more in there than before, I've still got spare capacity AND I can actually move around in there !

I was going to fit the roof felt this weekend and call it done but realised that I haven't really got enough room in the back garden at the moment to lay the felt out for cutting !
