Title: Announcing - Project Garage Mk II - The uber extension !!!
Post by: Roadkill on August 24, 2008, 11:52:21 am
The story so far . . . . . .

As many will know Castle Roadkill began life with a standard 16' x 8' Garage but after purchasing the Caddy - at 19' long - it spent it's first year with the garage door open, bungie-tied around the Caddy's rear bumper.

(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/Redhuish21.jpg\" border=\"0\"  alt=\"\" width=150>So began the "lean-to" extension.  All timber, cheap - but well made.  It had a plastic corrie-roof and did the job.  The Caddy was in ! [img]http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/Redhuish36.jpg\" border=\"0\"  alt=\"\" width=150>Of course, this meant demolishing the rear wall of the garage which was fine as I had access to materials and - more importantly - knew what I was doing ! [img]http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/Redhuish30.jpg\" border=\"0\"  alt=\"\" width=150>Of course that was fine but still not ideal.  I wanted more.So began the insertion of a steel-framed mini-mezz to raise the level of the garage up and provide a smooth, insulated floor for my Caddy to sit on. [img]http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/Redhuish38.jpg\" border=\"0\"  alt=\"\" width=150> [img]http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/Redhuish42.jpg\" border=\"0\"  alt=\"\" width=150> [img]http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/garage1009-1.jpg\" border=\"0\"  alt=\"\" width=150>Along with this came the new roller-shutter door - the old one collapsed ontop of the Caddy putting a dent in the trunk which made the decision easy. The new door actually provided more useful space too which was also a major plus. This was taken mid-fitting [img]http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/Redhuish44.jpg\" border=\"0\"  alt=\"\" width=150>So.  Obviously next job was too get the Caddy in the higher garage . . . And so the task of calculating the correct angle and length of ramp to cast. All sorted - the ramps were made. [img]http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/ramp007.jpg\" border=\"0\"  alt=\"\" width=150>And, there She's sat when not out and about . . . . [img]http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/garage1011.jpg\" border=\"0\"  alt=\"\" width=150>End of Part 1.[img]http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Soooo.

All was well.

But I still wanted more . . . . along came many different ideas to increase the length even further and add even more useability to the space.

It was a difficult task as to be blunt, the existing "lean-to" was 12' long - which is pretty much the maximum I'd span timber of this size, unsupported.

Steel was an option - but expensive and as I'd left my old job I could no longer get it for *cough* free.

So I continued until Graeme decided to quit the barn*

*Note at this point that we'd fitted a 17'6" long mezz in the barn a couple of years back.

Ideal. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

A new plan was hatched.

Use the steel from that mezz as roof beams to span the distance.
Also I should have enough steel left over to increase the mezz-ed floor, too.

Work began yesterday with the erection ((http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/smirk.gif)) of three posts which will become the "far" wall.
Alot of measuring and working out was required so work appeared slow but all got done to plan.
The budget for this build is significatly more so the end result will be alot better.

I was hoping to gain an additional 4'6" - 5' (internally) on what I already had . . . . after the posts were in and the calculations done it's now looking like I'll gain an extra 5'10".

Well worth the effort.

As an extra plus the new extension will also be taller, meaning more head-room, too.

[img]http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/odd011.jpg\" border=\"0\"  alt=\"\" width=150>

And here's a random Toad that was chillin' in the steels yesterday morning . . .

Cool.. Nice work so far..  How have you put those uprights in, are they dug in then concreted?  Looks like you have had to break through the concrete patch if so?

They are indeed. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/grin.gif)

No.  The area was a (badly laid) patio - what you can see is a mix of sand and mud.

Because of the sand it actually made digging the (normally M.K clay) ground very easy. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

Honestly ? Never. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

I honestly believe I'll never have a "free day" in my life. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

38mm HIGH density PARTICLE board.  I empathsise H/D and "Particle" as most you can get is medium density chipboard - which is shite.

Particle board is heavier and more dense.

However to get a close result you could lay two layers of 25mm M/D chipboard - with the top one running perpendicular. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

Also I then over-laid the P/B with 6mm oil-tempered hardboard.  This gives the super-smooth finish and provides a very good water resistant layer. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

It's been tempting, believe me . . But even I have to have some restraint !

Here's a piccy of todays work - again not obviously alot but much of it was calculating the run off angle for the rain water.

I was aiming for as little as possible and the point at which we started was just 1:100 - ie. 10mm drop per metre !

I decided this was just too little (it risked pooling) so increased that to 1:50.

The cross-beam is in and all bracing removed.

(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/odd2.jpg\" border=\"0\"  alt=\"\" width=150>The timber has had an initial treatment and - by shear fluke - I stumbled apon a soak-away while digging the first hole yesterday.  Long story short that'll make the drainage issue very, very simple - (note the downpipe already fitted to the post closest).I've just been out to measure what will be the total length and am happy to announce that it'll go from 28' to a whopping 33'10" - easily enough to fit two "normal" cars in but, alas, not quite enough when one of them's a Cadillac ![img]http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Shouldn't you have made it long enough to fit the Caddy & Camaro in (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

Viz tip of the day - Having a problem with fitting two cars into your garage? Try driving the second car into the garage at high speed and use the concertina effect to get that bit of much needed extra space.

Of course . . . but :

a) As stated I was limited by the steelwork I had available and

b) 19' + 16' = 35' . . . Then plus another 2' for the much needed workbench and storage area/cupboards . . . then another 3'6" to fit in and access my roll cab and you've got 40'6" -> an additional 6'8" required . . not exactly a "little bit".

That 6'8" would put it almost half way down the garden . . . also it would lower the headroom a further 2 1/2" (ish) to achieve the required run-off . . .

I'm not saying it didn't cross my mind . . . but I did do the maths and realise I had to stop somewhere.

Thanks to Ryan, Titsy and Chris for assistance yesterday.

I/we got the old lean-to down fairly quickly yesterday (most of it I'd done during the week).

Alot got done but unfortunately a 40 minute shopping trip for timber and coach screws turned into two hours and that kinda killed a large part of the day. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/down.gif)

Still.  The roof steels are up, bolted in place and ready to go.

I need to add another beam to the outside before the OSB boards are screwed down forming the roof - and am hoping to do some of that today inbetween the rain . . . .

Fingers crossed.

Here's some piccy's . . . With the steels in place the size is becoming apparent.

Post by: Roadkill on September 01, 2008, 11:44:51 am
That's best explained if I take a picture - but -

On the ends of the steels there's bolted a cleat (angle bracket) that is coach-screwed to a piece of 3"x3" timber.
The timber is seated on the lower flange of a 254x102 U.B I have supporting the rear part of the garage roof.
The timber is then packed square and level and restrained by a series of screws bolted through the web of the beam into the timber.

It's not ideal but will easily survive the loadings it'll see . . . (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

ah right, so the weight it supported there, and at the other end its just supported by those 3 uprights! is that enough ? (not picking, just asking)

Yes.  That said timber isn't an exact science.

Steel is easy to rate whereas timber is graded (I believe) so not as simple.

There'll be some sway factor on the structure to add in but to counter this I'll be adding plenty of knee-bracing to ensure it stays rigid.

The three uprights are about 22" into the ground and set in concrete, by the way.

It'll certainly look more solid as more support is added. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

so those 3 will hold the weight of half the roof, or more if its tilted down at that end.. ?

Basically, yes. *

The run-off is about 1:50 so the angle is next-to-nothing.

However any angle will increase sideways load hence the addition of knee-bracing (in both directions).

Even flat roofed structures encounter side loads (eg. wind).

Now for the "*"

There will be further supports to break the span of the roof down in to 3 smaller sections.
The steels I'm using are designed to be used "upright" - that's how they're rated.
However, I need the additional headroom (the difference is 63mm compared to 200mm) so turned them "toes down".
Because of this the deflection is increased, hence the introduction of further support (not yet fitted).

Long story short, It'll all make sense within a couple of weeks. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

No.  Not at all. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Technically it's a shed - no foundations and no "permanent" walls.

Plus it's within all height/size/volume regulations required by the council. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

Planning will be the easy bit, especially as it's not a habitable area.  Building control, however, is alot more complex.

I'd love to make this "extension" of mine out of bricks and mortar but the building control is a headache.

Your best bet is to see someone at your local council re. planning but mainly building control.

They're normally quite helpful and will give you advice and leaflets . . . remember that all local councils' requirements are slightly different so never assume anything without seeing an "official" first.

The regs for garages are relatively simple, in comparison to rooms.

Planning is pretty much guaranteed (providing you're within certain heights, volumes and are not within certain property boundaries).

You can issue your own drawings (handdrawn or CAD) but it's normally beneficial to employ a draftsman to do the work for you as they'll have some grasp of what's going to be asked for (what spec glass for windows, what/where ventillation strips, foundation make up, DPM . . etc)
It'll cost you more this way but will save MAJOR hassle with it constantly being rejected for silly little omissions.

Weeeeeelll, the weather, unfortunately wasted most of my day-off yesterday so the head-start myself and Ian made on monday night seemed kinda wasted.

However, after the rain finally stopped at 6pm last night I dragged myself back out there and continued . . .

All boards are now cut and fixed to the roof.  I need to add a few timber screws along the edges and trim the edges back a little but that's about an hours work - tops.

Next job is the roof-felting.  And that's a priority . . . looking at the weather it really needs to be done ASAP !

No pictures to add (P.C's sick) but it's really coming on.  Everything's going to plan - only the weather is slowing progress at the mo'.

Yeah, I'm gonna stick to a painted floor under the car - but opt for a tile-based option in the "workshop" area . . . . (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

Work has been progressing since the last pictures were taken - honestly !

Here's some fresh ones from tonight . . .

First one shows tonights work (double-skinning the fence to the left) . . .

The second shows the complete mainframe (note the acro's are only still there as I just haven't taken them down yet !)

The underlay is on the roof (so it's waterproof) and the capsheet will go on this saturday.

Once that is done the sub-framing can begin.

Maybe with some transport . . . I need a load of 50x50 timber for the subframe.

It's mainly light work from here (until the floor goes in).

Yeah, I see what you're saying - to be honest I have thought about it several times before - but I need a fixed, heavy duty, workbench more than I need an extra door.

When the garden's finally done there won't be any room for anything (more) in the garden, anyway . . . .

Got more done over the weekend . . main thing is that the cap-sheet is on the roof, meaning that there's just some odd little jobs to finish then the roof is done !

Started framing the interior . . . took ages doing the initial parts (I've got a piccy to post up later) . . .

Hopefully by the end of tonight they'll be some noticeable progress.

At the rate I'm going I'll be ready for "skinning" the outside within the nex 3-4 days-tops.

The ship-lap panels will be cut and lowered into position on the outside, from the inside (if you know what I mean), then fixed to vertical braces (not yet fitted) from the inside (so no screw / nail heads showing from the outside).

The end (window) wall is now fitted with all it's vertical supports . . . (because the span is so little it won't have any horizontal "noggings").

Note openings for future windows.

Must move those acro's at some point . . . .

Tonights job, simply put, can be summed up in one word - "Noggings".

I'll be adding short horizontal supports along the entire length of the long wall . . . . if that gets done I'll be adding some knee-bracing after that.

Then that'll just leave the short (door) wall to do - which I'm purposely leaving for now to maximise access.

Bit of both.

I know plenty but you always have to learn some stuff as you go along on a project like this.

Felting a roof was fairly alien to me. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Got yet more done last night . . . . completely finished the long wall (added noggings) and was gonna add some bracing but, tbh, it's F*cking solid so would be an utterly pointless task !

I then added a couple of extra pieces of timber in the window end (which will be required to house the window frames).

Then added any timber I could to the "door" side, while keeping the area as clear as possible.  (To add any more on that side will require the rear of the Humber moving out of the way first . . )

Tonights job is gonna be research . . . Door/frame sizes and recon for the pending shopping trip for ship-lap.

I took pics last night - but it got too late to upload.

Oh, Acro's are removed, now, too.

I'm surprised to see that your shiplap is inside the battons (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

Gotta make a lot more work ( exact length cuts ) and lots of weather/water sealing issues (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

To clarify :

The main frame uprights are 75 x 75 mm, the subframe is 47mm thick, leaving a 28mm recess in which the shiplap sits (between the main uprights).

EDIT - Yes, they span between the uprights, but they've been sealed to prevent any weather getting in.

This design at least makes the structure a little more interesting looking rather than a flat expanse of cladding.

Seems ages since I updated this . . . . (that's what a holiday does to ya'). (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Got loads done at the weekend - I was pleasantly surprised. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Thanks to Ian for assistance on saturday - sunday I was on my own but made some major advancements.

The "long side" is now 99% finished (just requiring some timber to cover the ends of the felt), the "window end" is finished being clad and sealed, just needed the windows themselves and the "door side" now has all the framing done, cladding cut and treated, ready to be fitted.

EDIT - We also got gravel boards fitted to the "window end" and "door side", too. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

So, some piccy's -

Finally a piccy to show the gap between next door's fence and the new "lean to".

Note that the gap actually reduces down to 3mm near the bottom (the fence leans over slightly).

Nowhere near !

There's still the windows, door, the suspended mezz floor, the dual-layer insulation in the walls, the roof insulation, the dry-lining on the walls and ceiling, plastering, artexing, plumbing, electrics, phone, workbench, sink, lighting, stereo and speaker install, internet & P.C install, modifications to existing brick piers (in the original garage) and further "false" walling and insulation, too.

I just had to level some nail heads saturday but that took seconds . . .

On Saturday morning Ian came over and assisted me in getting the first (two out of three sections) of the roof timbers (for the ceiling) in.

I later went back out and got the noggins in too, also the new cross-beam required to take the last section of timbers.  I also finished sealing around all of the panels (to stop any damp or draught getting in behind the walls once they're plasterboarded).

Here's a piccy of two-thirds of the roof done . . .

Yesterday PhilO assisted in getting the last of the longer timbers in so tonight I can get out there and totally finish the ceiling framework.

Well, tonight I ran out of nice fresh timber so - not to be delayed - resorted to using the last of the timber from the old "lean to".

Good in a way 'cause it clears some more $hit out of the back garden and saves me some money - bad in that it just looks a bit crap for now.

Here's a piccy of all the ceiling framing done and dusted.  Well, done anyway.

Next job - run some cables !

Progress is slow with next-to-no money. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

But I have now got the double-glazed windows ordered (will be ready this friday) and we started insulating the "long" wall.

Had a tidy-up outside, too . . but it still looks like a dump ! (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rofls.gif)

Next job is going on a shopping trip for the guttering and downpipe this friday, ready to fit the windows and guttering on saturday.

Done.

Guttering brought and fitted (note the now-redundant small downpipe on the right) - the new downpipe is on the left hand side.

Also, after some effort, fitted the 14mm Double-glazed windows, too.

The new downpipe actually returns into the extension (under the floor level) to connect to the original soak-away intake.

I figured this way is a better way of doing it as I know that soak away is definately capable of the extra run-off.

Note also in the above picture the layered insulation to the long wall . . .

Well, winter's over and soon the Camaro will be moved outside so work can continue with the garage extension.

All's been well over winter, no leaks or signs of damp areas so I'm happy. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

The next two jobs are to finish the "long wall" and install the "mezz-floor" in the new section.

Although the floor will clear aload of materials out of the way it's also a very expensive job so I'll probably opt to do the wall first . . . hence I've just ordered some 150 x 8 mm flat steel bar to produce a bracket which is required for me to be able to acheive what I'm after.

I'm hoping to get the 'Maro out this weekend - but it'll depand on both the weather and the progress of parts from the states (as yet not everything is with Carl, so nothing is going anywhere at the mo).

i was hoping to extend our garage in the same kind of way BUT after adding it all up it looks quite expensive in relation to building a whole new one...

I only worked this out becuase our garage wants:

widening
lengthening
a new roof
a new roller shutter door

after drawing it all out it turns out we're only keeping half of one of the existing walls !!!!!  I dont think it can be an extension when 95% of the parts are new !!!!

Finally a reasonable update on the "extension" . . . .

I've totally demolished the old "lean-to" floor (this was a 7"-2" concrete slab over very uneven 2" paving-slabs) . . and, thanks to Ian, have got rid of all the rubble.

Next job is levelling the earth below, ready for the new timber-framed "mezz" floor.

I need 195mm clearance below floor level all-over and it's not that far off already.
I shifted around 16 buckets out last night . . . the plan is to finish levelling on friday so I can start planning the frame-work.

UPDATE :

Progress is good on the "extension" . . . .

The floor is now levelled and quite smooth . . . I've also now added timber shuttering to create chambers in which concrete will be poured, forming a flat, level base on which further timbers will be fixed to raise the floor level enough to add insulation below the deck.

The cement mixer is booked for collection on friday, the calculations are done - I'll be ordering the Balast and cement tonight.

UPDATE (still no pictures . . . . )

The concrete has been poured and the floor levelled. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif) (I've got a pic of that to follow).

Currently the 250um DPM is down, too, and the "subframe" timbers are mainly down also.

In between the timbers I've fitted most of the 50mm polystyrene insulation as well . . . .

Tonights job is to finish the timbers, trim the DPM and finish fitting the insulation to the floor.

Then I'm ready for the main deck. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/beavisnbutthead.gif)

The pace of progress has been fairly fast with this . . . the new support bracket for the loaded beam has been fitted and is now doing its job . . . .  the "long" wall is now entirely framed, insulated (with 50mm polystyrene) and plasterboarded.

Next job is to lower the ceiling in "the old section" (ie. install new frame for lower ceiling) and then fit plumbing for front and rear outside taps, fit cables for new lights and sockets and then fit the complete, new ceiling . . . .

(Nearly) all go . . . ! (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/headbang.gif)

Some pictures of the long wall . . . .

Mid framing - part framed, part insulated, part plasterboarded - note bracket (just visable - acro prop still in place)

Same shot - later on - fully framed, fully insulated, just the final plasterboards to go on . . . (note notches along top edges for roof supports - these will be hidden when the ceiling is lowered).

Thought I'd add an update - although this will lack in pictures as I haven't had the time to pull them off my camera . . . .

The new sub-ceiling frame is in and complete - this now means that the entire ceiling is on the same level ( at about 7' ).

This was done for three reasons:

Firstly - it looks tidier also 7' is high enough and it's less wasted space to heat in winter. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Secondly - the old ceiling in the original section had to be cut in places to expose the old wiring AND got covered in brick dust during the modifications to the brickwork. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Thirdly - It made it ALOT easier to run the wiring for the new lighting set-up and the plumbing for the new sink and outside taps to front and rear. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

So that bit is done and waiting on said wiring and plumbing . . . . . .

The wiring is also nearly done - in fact the lighting side was finished last night - I now have three lights down each side and one on a separate switch above where the bench will go.

The plumbing is also progressing . . . the "Hot" run was put in and finished as far as I could go (without a sink) and I'll crack on with the "Cold" run tonight (this is already about 50% done).
I'm hoping to get the front outside tap installed tonight as that accounts for a fair chunk of the remaining cold plumbing.

Hopefully by the weekend ALL the wiring and plumbing will be done ready for some more plasterboarding.

Mega thanks to Ian for general assistance and project management on the wiring side of things.

On the plus side the front outside tap is finished, now as is all of the other plumbing up to the point where they will meet the new sink / taps.

I need to fit the outside tap to the rear this evening but I've already pre-assembled the pipe work, leaving only one solder joint and one compression joint to do.

I did a series of "odd" jobs last night, fixing scraps of insulation to the ceiling (every little helps), fitting pipe clamps and wire clips and cutting and fitting strips of plasterboard where required around the rear windows . . . .

I also fitted a section of plasterboard to the left wall effectively now allowing for the work bench to be fitted . . . .

However, Ian came round and finished connecting the new mains wiring to the original (and stripped out the old) - meaning I now have finished electrics - meaning the ceiling is ready to go in !!!

Cheers, Ian. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/worship.gif)

The plan is to go shopping for the ceiling plasterboard this evening. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/beavisnbutthead.gif)

I also got another section of pipe in on the cold run - meaning that the rear outside tap is now also done and working and, as I checked this morning, apparently leak-free . . . . which was good as soldering copper pipe with a blow-torch in blustery conditions is fekking hard work !

The labryth of pipes and wires . . .

And all covered.

Done. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Just got to install insulation to the ceiling then we're ready for (more) plasterboard.

EDIT - Since these photos were taken the lighting and wiring has been organised / secured / tidied considerably.

Also the pipework has had lagging added.

Just needed to mention that. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Busy, busy, busy friday eveing and saturday !

Got half the insulation fitted on friday.

Also fitted half a board at the door end so I could start boxing in the roller-shutter door (to reduce the draughts).

Next we put up another three boards (to cover the area already insulated).

After that it was a matter of putting up one boards worth of insulation at a time then fitting the board below until the whole ceiling was fitted.

Ian also managed to complete the mains electrics - fitting the outside socket to take the garden stuff and fitting another double socket.

A baton was also put in on the far wall which will be the support for the worktop.

After that (and after a shopping trip to pick up some more screws) I carried on boxing in the roller shutter.

Cheers to PhilO and Ian for assistance on Saturday, my Dad for assistance on Firday evening and even thanks to Sammy for her brief (yet critical) help yesterday eveing.

By shear fluke the far left hand corner (where the sink was planned to be) just happens to be directly over an inspection cover for the main soil pipe from the house.

I plan to introduce a pipe, there.  Not ideal - but alot simplier than trying to route waste back to the house soil, only for it to pass right under the sink, en route to the main sewer.

Obviously there won't be any solids deposited there, only dirty water so they'll be no chance of blockages, either.

Tonights job is to assemble (and modify) the units I brought over the weekend to go in the garage.

The worktop is going to be a custom height therefore I need to know exactly how high the units are in order to make up framing for them to sit on.

Then, obviously, the next job will be to buy more timber and make said framing ! (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

EDIT - I also need to add another 200-odd screws to the ceiling. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

The units are generally assembled and ready for fitting . . . the heavy-duty frames on which they'll sit are also finished, too.

I've also now taken delivery of the new sink and taps (and have assembled the sink !!) . . . The rear door main frame is now modified and the original brick wall side is partly plasterboarded.

I've also added some frame work to the short wall the door is mounted to to enable to flush-mount the new light switch and socket and to hide the cold pipe for the front outside tap.

Pics to follow.

Bit of a failure this evening due to drill bits failing on me - oh, well - still got a reasonable amount done - will hit it again tomorrow !

Some pics . . . .

Here's the frame under the main two cupboards to be fitted under the workbench . . . Yes the frames are heavy-duty but the cupboards will be fairly well-loaded . . .

Also note the fresh, vertical timber to the left - this is the modifications I required to fit the door I wanted and to extend the depth of the bench slightly.

Here's a pic showing the very tight arrangement of plasterboard-bearing batons, insulated cold water pipe (grey), lighting and mains cables and light switch and socket !

It'll be pimpin' and tidy when I've finished with it, though.

A shot from tonight . . . . Sink and waste assembled and loosely sat on the frame to assess location . . . cupboard carcasses sat roughly in position and, note, flexible grey waste pipe disappearing through the bottom of the cupboard on the left and going through the 38mm deck, 50mm of polystyrene and through the soil pipe inspection drain cover.

Work is progressing nicely . . .  I'm now aware that I'm approaching the one-year anniversary of this project so am anxious to get as much done before then !

Here's a picture of the outside (rear door) looking in - the new door is now test-hung (out of shot).

And here's a shot of the new (and final) cupboard carcass . . . this'll give me enough space to completely clear out the '58 and find homes for everything (apart from the stuff in my roll-cab, of course)

It did cross my mind . . . the hinges on it are roller-bearing, polished stainless at £14 a pair !!!

My reasoning for going with two was that it's shorter than a standard door (it's 74") so the span between hinges is less . . . .

However, now you mention it . . . . (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

Well . . . the next major job was sanding down all the joints in the plasterboard . . .

The jointing compound container said "sand with fine sand paper to a smooth finish"

Based on this info I guessed it'd take an evening, maybe two to do.

Along comes thursday evening.  I begin.  Three hours later and using P60 grit (hardly f*cking fine is it !!??) and my sanding catches fire !!!

Hardcore.

I sand some filled-in screw heads for another hour then give up.  I'm beat.

Friday I collect a new sander and PhilO brings home some industrial grade P40 grit.

Even more hardcore !

Saturday morning, after the gym, I begin again.  Progress is slow - very slow - and the dust is hell.

Sunday morning, after the gym, I begin (yet) again.  Progress is (again) slow - very slow - and the dust is hell (again).

By end-of-play sunday the walls are done just leaving the "softer" artex-style filler on the ceiling.  It'll be a nice easy one monday, then.

Yeah, 'course it was.

This artex stuff is basically ready mixed granite.  Not even the P40 touches it !!!

By this point I'm honestly knackered and utterly at the point of surrender . . . so I take one final go using P24 pads on my 115mm ANGLE GRINDER !!!

The dust is now flying f*cking everywhere but it's still resisting it !!!

Another 5 hours later - a total of 22 hours spread over three days - or 26 if you include the thursday and I'm kind of finished.

I took yesterday off and then starting PVA'ing the ceiling (ready for artex pattern) and walls (ready for patch filling and paint) this evening.

The garage is, again, reasonably dust-free and tidy once more . . . . . the pictures below were taken on monday afternoon before the clean-up began.

I'm kinda after a "homely" feel . . . . (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

The basic choice for garage floor paints is light grey, dark grey, mid-blue, red or a sandy colour.

So the walls need to suit.

I was thinking of flaming the lower half of the walls but I dunno. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

hehehe great minds. After spending that much time and effort it would be a shame to paint it like a garage. Flame it or some mega size pinstriping design. A neutral base colour with some great graphics, make it a garage to come home to.

ya do if you have boards with tapered edges,
there made to have a tape and joint finish then fill the recessed screws in the rest of the board, and paint with a couple of coats of emulsion(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Great.  Ian replaced the speaker-to-speaker cable as I wanted them up to 8 feet apart - that's done and they sound sweet . . . Sub is awesome, too.

That was the original plan but is currently in debate as the light given out by the existing energy savers is pretty good as is.

Yes and no.

If you use T.E (tapered edge) plasterboard you use jointing compound and tape to JUST fill the recesses at the edges of the boards . .

If you use S.E (square edge) boards it's the norm to plaster the entire surface.

Either option you'd use a form of tape to bridge the gaps - which should be no more than 6mm (i tend to go for 2-3mm gaps personally).

The later is done mainly in smaller areas as it's generally more costly.

Great. Ian replaced the speaker-to-speaker cable as I wanted them up to 8 feet apart - that's done and they sound sweet . . . Sub is awesome, too.

Quoting: art b

i always use easifill ,mix it up with water and sand it down with a pole and sanding pad,
takes next to no time......painting it makes it rock solid...

Quoting: Cunning Plan
Is that how you cover plaster board then? Jointing compound to cover the joints then plaster over the top

ya do if you have boards with tapered edges,
there made to have a tape and joint finish then fill the recessed screws in the rest of the board, and paint with a couple of coats of emulsion

(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif) I see.. i have an outhouse that is being converted into an office to do at my parent's house and haven't plastered or artex'd before (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/confused.gif)

Definately go T.E boards - with as few joints as possble.

When the time comes PM me and I'll run through it with you if ya want. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

I think I'm "over the worst", now . . .

The walls have been rubbed-down . . .

And then painted once with white to show any further minor imperfections . . . and then fine-filled . . . .

And on Saturday I artexed the entire ceiling (never artexed a ceiling before) . . . .

Next job is to put another coat of white on the walls - that'll be the final one before the top-coat-colour(s).

Then I'll paint the ceiling once with a slightly watered-down mix of white . . . . . and then the coving can go up. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

What did you decide on for the wall design?

I never have.  I know, I know it's supposed to go up first and then the artex is finished round it but I prefer the look of the stipples right up to the line of the coving.

Just preference . . . plus, as the coving was put up after the ceilings were done in the rest of the house, this way it matches !

Although the colours haven't been decided yet I'm leaning towards "flaming" the bottom half of the wall.  The plan would be to paint the skirting boards the same colour as the lower section of wall so the skirting boards will be an up-coming job, shortly.

I was also toying with the idea of running a pin stripe the length of the garage, too (with some design incorporated into it), but will see how the flaming goes first as it may be enough as is.

I've been a little half-ar$ed of late . . . not getting stuck into things when I've got in from work . . .

So I spent 3 hours or so hoovering (until the hoover cut-out), marking out and fitting the coving last night.

I must admit, as expected, the coving brings the walls and ceiling together nicely and, once filled and painted, should give me the "pick-me-up" I need to get the job done.

Tonights job is to finish fitting the coving, do most of the coving-related filling, fit the PC speakers to the ceiling and finish hoovering the worst of the dust up.

If I can get that done, and with a bit of luck, I should be able to get the coving finished and painted and the final coats of paint on the ceiling by sunday evening.

DONE (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

fit the PC speakers to the ceiling

SEMI-DONE . . . . They're in place but I will have to put some more thought into mounting them on the ceiling . . . shouldn't be an issue, though.

finish hoovering the worst of the dust up

DONE (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

I'm a bit limited on what I can tackle tonight - which is handy as I've got other stuff to be doing this evening - so the plan is just to have a little tidy-up and finish filling / smoothing the coving - ready for paint on Friday.

Hmm. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

Progress has been a little slow due to other commitments and my recent holiday but there's been reasonable progression over the last couple of days. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

The ceiling is now finished and painted.

I need to give it one final check but I believe the coving, too, is all done.

The walls are ready for colour.

The new lights are on order and should be here any day, now (but I want to paint the walls before installing them).

The main change is the floor.  An old board was pulled, the threshold between new and older floors repaired and secured and a couple of holes left-over after I modified the piers have also been filled.

Last night the "new" 6mm boards were cut and tacked down, also, completing the floor structure.

The floor needs a bloody good scrub, a sand and the joints filled and then it'll also be ready for fresh paint.

Getting there . . . . . . . (they can inscribe that on my Tombstone) (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rofls.gif)

Also went out and got the paint . . . 2 x 5L of Dulux mixed paint . . . normally £31.99 a can (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/shame.gif) BUT, as luck would have it, on special offer at 2 FOR £30 !!!

Result !

Also picked up the fixings I need to put the lights up and some ring nails for the upper H/B deck.

I'll be giving it some (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/diy.gif) tonight.

Hurrah !

Finally got some time back in the garage over the weekend inbetween other stuff.

Obviously I've pushed the proposed LAN event back two weeks to give me some elbow-room but things are still going to be a real push to get done.

Saturday evening I managed to do the second - and last - lot of cutting in . . . another 2-and-a-half hours of fun - yay !

Sunday I rollered the walls twice with the choosen colour - pimpin' purple. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/pimp.gif)

I also managed to finish fixing the speakers to the ceiling and then myself and Ian started tackling the new low-profile tube-lights.

Progress was O.K - we managed to get 2 out of 7 up . . . but that said that was 2 out of the harder 4 . . . the 3 others should be much easier.

Not bad . . . but, alas, I now have to break-off once again and start tearing out my parents bathroom as they've decided it's not ideal and won't be useable once my Dad gets out of hospital in a few weeks' time . . . . that'll be my third new bathroom I've fitted in two years.

It's gonna be close. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

The P.C here at work is getting slower by the day, BTW . . . . . (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rolleyes.gif)

Anyway - Update.

Still no pictures - yeah, I know, but I've been busy . . .

All the lights are in and finished, now (thanks, Ian).

Most of the recent work has been the rear/side door and frame (my Dad has been treating that during the day while I've been doing their bathroom by night (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rolleyes.gif) ).

That said the door should see its last coat today - as will the frame - meaning the door will be ready for re-hanging Wednesday (whether that actually happens then or not's a different story . . . )

On top of that I've (just this morning -> 6.30am starts 4 teh win !!!111 (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/down.gif) ) finished making the window framing . . . it's been sanded and knotted and hopefully will see it's first undercoat today, also.

Also, also, I fitted the P.C speaker sub to the wall last night, too. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Although I need a male-female speaker jack extension cable to wire it up. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/down.gif)

Pics to follow. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rofls.gif)

(For Ian (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif) )

Finally got the garage re-ordered and ready to attack the floor.

First job was to plane the areas of previous damage (to the older section) in order to make it flat again . . . . then sand the floor to give it a good key and smooth repairs.

Next the floor was hoovered (twice) and wiped over with meths. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

After that the joins (or expansion gaps) filled with high modulus (very flexible) silicone to allow movement but resist dirt getting under the upper boards.

Then.  Paint.

I had brought a bargain 20 Litre tin so wasn't intending on scrimping but that said wanted fast drying times hence put the first coat on nice and thin.
Coverage was excellent and painting took 1 3/4 hours to complete.  It was dry inside 5 hours and only took just under 2 litres of paint !!!

Next coat I opted for a heavier roller.   45 minutes application time approximately 3 litres of paint used.  Dried within 7 hours.

The next coat I applied this morning - before work - it took, again 45 minutes to do and again took 3 litres - leaving me about 12 litres in the tin.

The plan - drying time pemitting is to do another full coat (number four) tonight and then allow it two full days to dry.  Then I'm going to give it a quick sand to reduce "hairing" in the former damaged areas before giving it a final heavyish coat . . . . . . which should leave about 6 litres to give the "office end" a coat or two and still leave about quarter of the can over !!!

I really must get some pictures up as the colour is awesome !!! (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/beavisnbutthead.gif)

Yes, really.  But being me I just stayed low to the ground and did without !!  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rofls.gif)

The fumes were near over-powering - honestly . . especially with the space-heater pumping heat out over my head !

The last time I painted the floor (different paint, two years ago) the fumes were nowhere near as bad . . . so I was taken by surprise a little.

Even with the doors all shut down you can still smell it from outside the garage.

I think last night was the worst as I was painting the fourth coat over the third which was only put on that morning so wasn't entirely solid . . in otherwords I had fresh fumes still coming from the third coat while laying down a fourth coat . . . . . add on burning propane and I must admit I felt pretty ill when I finally got in last night . . my eyes were streaming and my nose was running alot.

Still.  Nearly done !!! (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/beavisnbutthead.gif)

Have now applied the sixth and SEVENTH coats to the floor !

(I originally planned 3 or 4) (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rofls.gif)

I'll be inspecting the finish tonight and deciding whether to add coat number eight tonight or leave it at seven.

If I do do an eighth, that'll be the last one as I'm now running low on paint !

I worked out each coat take 2.35 litres . . . meaning in future I can "refresh" the floor with just one 5 litre tin.

Can't put any pictures up at the moment as I can't get to my P.C !

I did look at the floor last night and decided that seven was enough . . . plenty, in fact.

I'll be giving the garage short bursts of heat in the evenings to try and accelerate the drying time.

The paint's good to walk on but you can make minor indents with your nail in it (mind you that was after only 24 hours).

The plan is to leave it until Friday evening and then start fitting the skirting boards in the car-storage area.

It would be nice to bring the bike and Camaro in this weekend but we'll see.

PICTURES !!!

First is a shot taken about a month or more ago of the "office" end . . . I think it was to show the new framing around the windows . . .

Next is the floor planed, sanded and ready for the painting marathon !

Actually this particular picture shows the floor just before sealing the expansion joints - hence the strips of masking tape.

Next is the floor after four coats of paint and sanded to get that smooooth finish.

The floor just after coat number seven - it's shiny as the paint's obviously still wet.

This next one was taken just a few days ago.

The skirting boards on the right are completed and now painted . . the skirting on the left will meet-up with the office skirting and will be painted later . . .

Will be "cutting in" the skirting boards on the right hand-side tonight and adding silicone to the gap between it and the floor (hopefully).

Once that's done I can move my roll-cab into its new home and then start putting up my brand-new pile of tin-signs that's just arrived from the U.S.A ! (cheers, Carl).

The dehumidifier's certainly doing it's job . . . . and it's only on its lowest setting ! (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rofls.gif)

More work's been done.

I've put a thin coat of floor paint on the "office" end to seal it and help protect the floor against minor spillages.

Then I laid the carpet tiles in said area (I used double-sided carpet tape to ensure no movement).

Also, the rest of the skirting board has been cut / undercoated / smoothed and fitted . . . I'm just in the process of filling it before painting can begin (hopefully Wednesday evening - dependant on temperature).

I've also fitted a "push" plate to the side door (very much required while the door insulation is "settling in").

Last night I also cut the two aluminium corner protectors (for the area where my office chair goes) . . . I wasn't happy with the stock look so wet-n-dried them with 400-grit to a nice even, slightly dull finish.
They're ready to fit but can only go on once the skirting is finished.

The extreme cold hasn't helped progress recently . . . but the last two days has been back to painting temperature - just.

The skirting is now all fitted, filled and sanded smooth.

Saturday I fitted the freshly imported pile of tin signs I brought from the U.S (cheers, Carl) plus the dozen-or-so I already had . . . . Problem is that I quickly ran out, leaving half a wall uncovered, so another 19 are on order to complete the job.

Sunday I applied the first coat of paint to the L/H side skirting and the skirting in the "office" area.

Hopefully tonight I'll get the second, final, coat on.

Last night was spent doing a few odd-jobs here and there . . . I've prepared a "To do" list - which normally signals the final stages of a project . . . (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

I wish.  This is it . . the biggest it can be with the materials I had.

I could've stretched it maybe another 5'-6' or so by adding timber within the roof steels but that would've been very iffy to construct . . . Also I didn't have enough floor deck, either.

It would've been nice to get a little more but the line was drawn and I can't say I'm displeased with the results.

It's been a major effort but I'll be happy to just get it done and finished. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/grin.gif)

I don't exactly remember when the jobs got ticked off but on a list of 22 jobs I'm now down to just 4 !!!

From the remaining items two out of four are easily do-able, one is a weekend-only job and the other is dependent on the final batch of tin signs arriving.

After that the garage would benefit from a good hoovering but after that - it's done !!!

On the inside at least . . . . .

On the outside I still have a few jobs to do . . . . like give it a fresh coat of creosote (although this is really just maintainance) and seal around the door (5 minute job) - things like that.

It'll be nice to get the inside finished though . . . kinda scary really.

Still waiting on the tin signs . . . . . It's amazing - they go thousands of miles in just 2 days but have taken nearly a week to do the last 50 !!!

Also think I'm modifying how I'm doing the last job on the list so that'll take a bit longer, now.
It'll be much better for it, though.

Also (finally) ordered the mains connector thingy so I can have permanent, fast internet out in the garage as wireless just wasn't holding up out there . . . It should also make it simplier for the LANs, too, as we won't have to run a cable under the gravel to the lounge window !!

Been toying with the idea of adding central heating to the garage (it's the only thing it lacks except a toilet !!!)

My calculations state that it'll require approximately 15000 BTUs.

A 1400 x 600 single convector (like below) puts out 4950 BTUs so I'd need three (producing 14850).

http://www.wickes.co.uk/Single-Universal-Radiator/invt/201481

Approximate cost including valves and fixings : £215.

I really need the garage to maintain a temperature of around 12*C to prevent condensation/damp so that should do it . . . . I'm also considering ways of insulating the roller-shutter door on the front.

This was originally going to be a "some point" job . . . but as I need to drill holes into the house to run pipes (and I'll be decorating within the next few weeks) it makes sense to do it fairly soon.

On a sidenote :

Tackled the other half of the half-job on the "to do" list on saturday morning - will inspect later before crossing off of the list.

The final job will be the rest of the tin signs that I'll start this evening.

Have also upgraded the internet connection out in the garage from a p!ss-poor wireless to a mains-type adapter connection so am now getting a decent speed !
This'll also make internet connection alot easier for future LANs, too.

Have you though of something that could be mounted along the coving (i.e. between the lights) - means no loss of wall space.....?

You could have also run another wireless router out there and set it up as a signal repeater linking back to the main one in the house. Advantages would be for LAN partys - no messing about with wires and HUBs and you would get a good speed - probably as good as IN the house.

The problem is the wireless signal is not good at all on the garage - even with a high gain antenna on, hence going for the mains stuff (the other option was to run a proper LAN cable there!) - its pretty good - 50-60mbps between the 2 mains connectors (one in garage one in house) so its more than adequate for net surfing!

Also they connect to the PC / router with a standard Network RJ45 lead - so when LAN party, we just unplug deans PC - plug in a hub and away we go (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

I thought that was the idea behind making a router a repeater that even if the signal was poor, it would pick-up that signal and boost it again (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/huh.gif)

Or maby just put a router in the room closest to the garage (which I presume is the kitchen) and use that as a repeater - that way the signal isn't having to travel all the way through the garage wall before being repeated with full boost?  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

I thought that was the idea behind making a router a repeater that even if the signal was poor, it would pick-up that signal and boost it again

Or maby just put a router in the room closest to the garage (which I presume is the kitchen) and use that as a repeater - that way the signal isn't having to travel all the way through the garage wall before being repeated with full boost?

Well yes & no - its still got to get a decent signal to start with before it repeats it on.... so yeah you'd have to stick it somewhere in teh middle..but seeing as he already got the mains things = problem sorted (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

check ya boiler is big enough to supply the extra 14850 btu's

ditto, and also that your pump is man enough to cope with the extra flow.

I'd go with electric heaters; they'll cost more but less stress on your exisiting heating system and easier to control for a set temperature

Hmm won't the rad's reduce the overal width though, or are they being strategically positioned....

By about 50mm.

Quoting: ianjpage
Have you though of something that could be mounted along the coving

That wouldn't produce a decent heat flow.  Heat rises so to produce a flow they have to be near the floor.  Radiation-based heaters can be mounted high but household rads are convection types.

Quoting: art b
check ya boiler is big enough to supply the extra 14850 btu's

I will.

That said it was overkill when they installed it so it should be fine.

Quoting: Cunning Plan
Towel radiators would be cool - useful to dry and hang stuff too

Their BTU output is bloody awful, though !

Quoting: ianjpage
Hmm i was thinking more like the single bar / element heater things ... cant seem to find a linky at the mo though...

They run on electric so are more expensive and aren't quite as safe . . . they're more for supervised use.

Quoting: Titsy
I bet you wish you'd put underfloor heating in now...

Nah.

That's harder to control (delay) and wouldn't have suited the construction of the floor.

The theory is to mount all the rads low-down, evenly along one wall . . . there's minimal draft in there so it should create a nice heat flow.

I will

I just found a similar boiler to mine (may even be the same) - that's got an output of 102,000 BTU.

Based on the current radiator arrangement I'd say that they're currently using about 28,000 at most.  There's two small/med singles and a med double downstairs plus five small/med singles upstairs.

I'll check my boilers specs to be sure.

My boiler appears to be a (Worcester Greenstar) Junior 24i OR 28i (Combi).

Either one has a max output of around 24KW (at full temp).

24KW = 81885 BTU I believe.

At most I currently use 28,000 BTU and require another 15,000 BTU - total of 43,000 BTU.

Which is obviously just over half of what the boiler can do.

Assuming I've got all my figures correct this seems like the simplest and cheapest method both long and short-term.

Ta-da !  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rofls.gif)

I finally, offically, finished the garage "fit-out" during the week.

All the jobs on the list are done.

I didn't take pictures straight away as she needed a bit of TLC . . . so I've now hoovered the carpet tiles and thoroughly wiped over the floor.

She's as good as she'll get.   That said there's some minor jobs that still need doing outside that'll take about a weekend to complete but they're outside and I need warmer weather to do them !

And then there's potentially the central heating bit but that's not a definate at the moment . . . . . . (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

So that's it. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

To summarise :

This has been a continuing saga since moving into Castle Roadkill in 2004 but the latest and biggest extension was finished in Feb 2010.

Then on 22nd December 2010 I had an massive leak in the form of FIVE separate burst pipes (my lagging clearly didn't do it's job).
http://www.mkb.cc/forum/index.php?action=vthread&forum=18&topic=10656&page=0

Repairs to the garage were very minor (given what could've been major damage) and the pipes reinstated during spring 2011.

In June 2011 (the weekend after my son was born), I started building "Jensen's playroom" - which was, in fact, a large convervatory on the rear of the house, connecting the main building to the garage extension.

The conservatory was finished in early November.

Then we had a LAN which, being late autumn, highlighted how much heat I loose out of the 290 sq. ft garage and its metal roller-shutter door.

So plans began on building a dividing wall, suitably placed so I can still use the garage to store upto a 20' long car with additional storage for bike(s) . . .

On the grand scheme of things a simple, unimpressive job for me but still a worthwhile note to properly tie up this thread methinks.

Pics to follow . . . (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

The garage end of the garage - this end will be kept unheated.
Size 20'6" x 8'4" approx.

Looking to the "office" end of the garage at the new divide.

The heated "Office / Daddy's playroom" end.
Size 15' x 8'4" approx.

Other side of the divide looking to the garage end.

The "old" cupboard and worktop removed to free up useable space.

The plan is to make the heated end entirely carpet tiled, repaint walls and ceiling.  Install a further 2x double sockets.  The dividing wall (which is insulated with 50mm polystyrene) will have double doors in to allow a (large) motorcycle (watch this space) to be moved into the area for future winter storage.  One wall will also house my recently acquired axe collection.  My roll cab will become a permanent resident in the heated area, FYI.

Truly shaping up to be a home from home.

Been busy (to say the least) recently so I won't bore you with loads of words and description.

In fairness I probably appear to make most look lazy.  The older I get the harder I find it to sit still - despite trying harder to do exactly that.

This last project was pretty much "out of the blue" but I'm convinced that once the kitchen is redone that all the notable house-related projects will be done for a few years.

I'm hoping that's the case so I can concentrate on Auto-related projects from then-on.

It's two 24" doors . . . I needed to create a gap big enough to fit a large motorbike through (hopefully future-proofing !!) and that seemed the best way.

The door which will be on the left will be fixed most of the time with the main access back and forth through the right hand door.

EDIT - note the curtain rail above the door, too ? - That'll hopefully help cut the drafts and heat-loss during winter as I have a fairly thick curtain to go on, there. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

We are currently looking to buy a house, but finding one with room to build a garage is not easy.

After looking at a few houses with 'a garage', I quickly realised that the standard single garage is just a glorified cupboard and if I wanted any space to be able to work on vehicles, I would have to build a garage.

I am sure I would end up doing something similar to what you are doing here.

If you look back at page 1 of this thread you'll see my first "lean-to" extension.  That was built out of 6' x 6' fence panels (about £15 each) and 3"x3" posts (about £10 each).  The roof was 3"x2" timber with a plastic sheeting.

The whole thing cost a few hundred to make and lasted fine until I "upgraded".

Basically.  If you're really stuck, you can make something very useable for change of £500 - less if you use secondhand bits.

Are you considering the four post lift for working under or just to make it easier for storage?

What about Baz's Dunlop lift? That looks proper smart!

Yeah Baz's lift is proper smart, especially tiled in like that, Very Chic (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/cool.gif)

I wouldn't lift the Camaro on it though, not without very sturdy Subframe connectors, but I guess the Viper is a bit more engineered in that area so it's fine.

Also because of changes to the car Dean's Camaro now has a Balance pivot point that is literally about 6" behind the front wheels (Not the arches, the actual wheels), if that, so to use a mid-lift system like that would require a BIG bag of sand in the boot to make the car stable.

I wouldn't put the Cadillac on the ramp, I'd put the Camaro on the ramp and park the Cadillac underneath.

Extra parking space AND access for doing servicing.

Baz's garage and ramps look crap - he should be ashamed of it and just sign the whole lot over to me to ensure no one ever sees it again.

Please.

I'm putting the 4-post lift on the back burner for now (simply because I have a storage space for an extra car at the moment, anyway) . . .

However, in order to accommodate future projects ( (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/security.gif) ) I do need more space . . . .

I have considered extending the existing garage again but like it how it is and if I did lengthen it again, they'd be nothing stopping me but the back fence (and that another 25-odd feet away !)

Note at this point that the limiting factor previously was the pond - which I've now decided to remove (long story).

So I'm going to be building a shed . . or two.   Or maybe even three but probably just two.

The plan is to build a small one to act as a true shed . . ie. to store the BBQ, gardening tools and Jensen's outdoor toys . . .

The other shed (workshop) will be much larger, will have a workbench and will act as an over-spill for larger tools (jacks, vice, axle stands, power tools etc . . )

This will clear some room in the main garage so I can use the space better and also give me an area (in the new workshop) to do heavier and dirtier work.

I was intending to be moving house around this time but, providing I can eventually achieve storage for 5 cars am happy to stay put another 5-7 years or so, so expansion to suit makes sense.

Actually one.

I had a measure-up and the "little one" won't work where I want it so plans are already under way to build a 1.4m x 3.85m shed/workshop.

The old pond is drained and the fish re-homed.  De-construction of that area has begun in order to clear the necessary room.

It'll be a fairly rapid build-plan as I need want it built so I can start gathering parts ahead of starting the Cadillac next year.

and i also have a large pair of cedar doors for the garage side..(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/cool.gif)

A little side project that I've been working on was a throw-back to "the great flood / burst pipe of 2010".

The cupboard under the sink took the brunt of the water and was never the same after.

A few months ago I decided enough was enough and emptied the cupboard . . . .

In typical "me" fashion, that's how it was left until last week when I gutted the rest by removing the bowed shelf and buggered back panel.

A quick clean with thinners (really) and good scraping to get all the old silicone off and I was left with this . . .

It was always designed as a "heavy duty" cupboard so I'd put plenty of support timbers underneath.  The new plan was much as the old . . put my jack, vice and axle stands in there . . . except now I have two jacks and the second is massive.

I need something to protect the lower surface and generally hide the previous damge and add some pimp'ness.

1.5mm brushed stainless (I love my job sometimes).  Pimperific !

So, now it's re-populated . . . I don't need the upper shelf anymore (thanks to the new sheds) so it makes getting the stuff in/out a lot easier !

Job done. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/diy.gif)

The garage is a little tidier, now, too.

I'm dusting this project off (again) as it's time to MODIFY !!!

One job inter-connects with another, meaning somethings have to change whether I want them to or not.

Cryptic ?

Yeah, a bit.  The concrete ramps outside the garage door have now gone (I'm gutted about this as they were perfect for doing servicing . . occasionally) but the trade-off will be a shiny new, flat block-paved driveway (gone is the gravel).

This means that the knock-on effect will mean the nice, relatively warm raised floor in the garage will be coming out this week as the Cadillac is currently homeless (had to get her out the garage before the ramps went).

This isn't as easy as it sounds, either, as the raised floor went in the garage before EVERYTHING else . . . so all that was built in there was put on top of this floor.

Should be interesting . . especially as I have zero budget at the moment.

My driveway is now all finished . . . I just need a couple of dry days so I can finish putting the fine sand down . . I spent 3 hours doing it on Saturday but after the rain on Sunday, it'd benefit a second go before parking cars on it.

The Caddy's back home, albeit on the front garden.

The first 16-foot of the garage floor (the original raised section) has been removed meaning I still need to - somehow - gain an extra 2-3 foot more to park the Caddy in there again.

That'll be fun.  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/smirk.gif)

I'll post some piccy's soon.  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

The original garage floor is crap, massively out so will need extensive screeding when money allows . . for now I'm just concentrating on making enough room for the Caddy to go back in.

I wish.  No, I made them a (stupidly high) offer but they still intend to keep it to store old furniture / crap in.

I'll probably end up buying their house if they move, change the boundaries, then re-sell the house without the garage . . . probably work out cheaper that way !

I did their side of the driveway effectively for free . . . but it'll benefit me in the long run.

They actually own the strip of land on the right of that picture, in front of the fence with the trees on it, too . . . . . If it were me - I'd claim it and use it . . . them, they just cut the hedge back once every few years . . . ?

I don't get some people.  I've expanded to the furthest reaches of my boundary lines to get the most out of my property and plot.

It frustrates me, seeing so much land being wasted, especially when there's a garage on it (or room to park a car, at least) !!!

I'd actually really like to get an "overhead" picture of my plot (once I've finished the next little project) from a drone or something.

The image on Google Earth is so old, now . . . It shows the original lean-to shack I had on the back of the garage . . . probably 8/9 years ago ?

None taken.

I like where I live, love it in fact.  I could've a bought bigger plot, with a bigger house but it would've meant a less-nice area . . . and I like to be the lowest common denominator in my area.

How have you got it set for metering? Centre weighted or matrix metering? That'll help a lot. I've only ever found in a dark gloomy ice rink that I've ever had to manual change the white balance. Even then I did it in 'shop to get them all similar.

I managed to steal a couple of hours on this over the weekend . . . The sides are now all trimmed back (ready for the next stage).  I also broke away the last two rows of old bricks that were the remains of the back wall of the garage.

I've now removed the timber decking up to the new (stud partition) back wall and most of the timber batons below.

I'll get the rest of the baton up tonight, then is the dreaded job of breaking up part of the new(er) concrete slab . . . I can't disturb the slab under the rear of the garage (the extension) but the front part needs to come out in order for me to get the levels even at the front.

I plan to chain-drill the slab then hammer the $hit out of it . . . . problem is my drill is on its last legs and I can't afford a new one just yet.   :can:

Finished taking up the timber batons last night, then smashed out the first strip of concrete and the timber that made up the front of the framework on the concrete pad.

The down pipe (that carries rainwater off of the back of mine and my neighbour's garages, the garage extension AND the Shed (I) is now visible . . . . The ground around where it heads in to the soak-away is pretty damp so I'm suspicious that I've put too much demand on the soak-away and it's not draining quick enough.

There's no evidence for this (what I need is a VERY heavy downpour so I can watch what happens) but I need to consider some options to possibly reduce the "load" on the existing soak-away.

:chiny:

The pipe leading to it is too high, too (as suspected) so that's another issue I've got to deal with  . . .

Not done anything out in the garage for a couple of days (been working on a different mini-project) but thought I'd put a couple of pics up . . .

Here's the slab for the extension exposed and ready for removal . . .

(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/Mini%20Projects/IMAG1269_zpsitikr0cq.jpg) (http://s30.photobucket.com/user/Roadkill-Auto/media/Mini%20Projects/IMAG1269_zpsitikr0cq.jpg.html)

And a close-up of the rain water pipe . . still not sure what I'm doing with this.

(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/Mini%20Projects/IMAG1270_zpsikid0gtp.jpg) (http://s30.photobucket.com/user/Roadkill-Auto/media/Mini%20Projects/IMAG1270_zpsikid0gtp.jpg.html)

My 240v drill (with hammer action) is on its last legs so I doubt it'd last long breaking up that slab (and in fairness, it's just not man enough, anyway) so I used the last bit of cash I had to splash out on a new SDS hammer drill !

True, I've now got no money for diesel until payday but I'll worry about that later.

breaking up that slab

I'm guessing there is a reason you cannot just use a mallet / pickaxe type of setup?  :diy:

Here's the slab for the extension exposed and ready for removal . . .

So, probably just me, but I am not exactly clear about what you are doing? (Yes sir, I read the lecture notes and the catch-up podcast).  :dunce:

This is what I think you are doing: Single garage, extended lengthways, raised floor to prevent damp / rust issues, now change of plan, dismantle the raised floor then.... ? ? ? ?, then Profit!   Right?  ???

And a close-up of the rain water pipe . . still not sure what I'm doing with this

Can you not just cut it where it starts to go into the garage floor and redirect it into the garden? Maybe a new pond?  :shark:

I'm guessing there is a reason you cannot just use a mallet / pickaxe type of setup?

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaaaa.  No.

Pickaxes are for hard ground but not concrete and a mallet would work on a brick wall with a chisel but not on concrete . . . a 10lb sledge would do a pretty good job of breaking it up but I avoided this for two reasons - (i) With the ceiling height in the garage relatively low, it'd be impossible to get a full swing and (ii) I didn't want to risk shattering the slab beyond the partition wall (the bit that's staying).

Can you not just cut it where it starts to go into the garage floor and redirect it into the garden? Maybe a new pond?

I could, but with the extension to the garage, the two sheds AND the conservatory then ALL dumping on to the (clay) back garden I'd no doubt have flooding issues !!!

The reason why I'm doing this - shortened version ?

O.K, here we go . . . .

When I first moved in I quite quickly extended the garage (MK1) to fit in the Caddy . . . eventually I thought about extending further to *hopefully* park two cars in there . . . trouble was the area behind the garage was quite high, in comparison to the garage floor so It'd mean loads of mud to remove, skips, mega-effort . . . then I'd be left with a potential flooding issue with water coming off the back garden . . . so I opted to raise the front of the garage with a low-level mezzanine to match the heights.  Materials were free and it worked a treat.  In order to gain access, the concrete ramps were built (I was never a fan as they looked untidy but they were useful and obviously did a job).
So, moving on, the original garage extension was knocked down and the second one built . . increasing the overall length to just under 35 foot.  This length came about as the materials I was using to support the roof were free and that was the length they were . . I eeked every last millimetre out of them but that was it.  The other factor was run-off on the roof . . . the longer the extension the lesser angle I'd have had - risking build up of water on the roof.
So, 35 foot it was but, as the build finished it became clear that although I could've fitted 2 Camaros in the garage, I was never going to fit the Caddy plus another . . . . With that in mind I later added the dividing wall between what is now my office/escape area and the main garage (this was done mainly so I could heat the office end without all of the warmth going out the non-insulated roller-shutter door (although I'll never be able to fit a second car in there, I did add double-doors in the dividing wall so I could put a motorbike in the office end, thus future-proofing that part, at least . . . of course, with the concrete ramps gone I'd still need a ramp to get a motorbike in the back but a ramp for a bike can be a lot less substaintial than that for a 5000lb+ Cadillac !!).

Now all up to date, with the Cadillac project looming and knowing there'd be long periods when she'll need moving in and out of the garage with no engine (that of course, with the ramps would be impossible, no matter how many volunteers I had) and with the fact that I'm growing too old to be laying in gravel under a car for 8 hours (plus) a day, I decided to opt for a nice, smooth block paved replacement for the gravel.
During the process the ramps were got rid of (so the Caddy could be more easily rolled in and out) . . . the knock on effect was that I could remove the low-level mezzanine I put in in 2006 but that would only give 16 foot at the lower level . . . I needed to remove another 3 foot of the slab I put in for the second garage extension or the Caddy wouldn't fit.

And that is where (and why) we are now !

Sorry, C.P, just re-read my post from last night and the first bit sounded a bit rude . . wasn't my intention to offend (on this particular occasion)

So, after 6 hours on Saturday (between looking after and entertaining a 3 year old while Mummy was at work) and 3 hours on Sunday (between looking after and entertaining a 3 year old while Mummy was at the gym) I got the slab broken up . . . I don't recall it being so thick (so am glad I opted for the heavy drill) . . . it was around 5" thick on one side (which I expected) and up to 9" thick on the other (!!!!!!).

I chain-drilled the slab on the line of the partition wall (to prevent that part of the slab from getting damaged) then continued to chain-drill a series of lines to make a grid pattern . . .
I then switched to bolster chisel and hammer and bashed the f**k out of it to break it up into more bite-sized bits . . . . sounds simple but it was bloody hard work . . .

Most of the drilling was done on Saturday and around 45% of the slab broken up and removed . . . . Alas, shortly after starting on Sunday my bolster chisel failed . . . :'(

(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/Mini%20Projects/IMAG1272_zpsto6xbjlg.jpg) (http://s30.photobucket.com/user/Roadkill-Auto/media/Mini%20Projects/IMAG1272_zpsto6xbjlg.jpg.html)

I could've got hold of another from my Dad's but I wanted to press on so I utilised the breaker option on the SDS drill and added the chisel tip . . . Woohoo ! that sh!t was fun !!!  Still hard work, but fun.

I pressed on and got 'er done.  Here's the stack of concrete and timber that went down the tip in the Mondeo on my lunch break earlier . . .

(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/Mini%20Projects/IMAG1273_zpszming3n3.jpg) (http://s30.photobucket.com/user/Roadkill-Auto/media/Mini%20Projects/IMAG1273_zpszming3n3.jpg.html)

The slab removed, ready for clearing, leveling and (ironically) another concrete slab !!!

(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/Mini%20Projects/IMAG1274_zpseultuvix.jpg) (http://s30.photobucket.com/user/Roadkill-Auto/media/Mini%20Projects/IMAG1274_zpseultuvix.jpg.html)

The good news is that, after some digging (literally) the soak-away appears to be low enough so I should be able to do something about lowering the pipe . . . . It's still a bit vague but I'm more confident now.
I also suspect that the dampness was actually caused by next doors garden (just inches away) being slightly higher than mine so I may add a bit of a dam when casting the new, lower slab at the level of the garage floor.

good news on the soak away, defo looks like it can be lowered nicely!

I think the last little bit actually is so it won't do any harm in lowering it.

It's okay, I only cried twice.

don't remember it being THAT deep concrete in the slab

It seems that on that side the ground is about 90% sand . . . whereas the other side is mud . . . I started digging out the soil ready for the new slab last night and it's hard not to "over dig" sand . . . I don't know whether to try to dig it all out back down to something solid (who knows how deep) or try to compact what's there before the next slab goes down (probably easier).

:chiny:

The plan is to get the basic slab in place, then thick-screed the entire garage floor so it's more level and smooth . . . . I haven't checked it thoroughly but it feels like there about 30mm difference in height in places . . . .

So was the Soak-away originally incased in the concrete of the garage floor when you moved in?   :dontknow:

Also, there is a good garage build thread here for some lunch-time browsing which may give you some more ideas for the floor: http://www.volkszone.co.uk/VZi/showthread.php?t=814413&highlight=Garage (Skip to page 7 for the start of the build, page 12 for the start of the floor laying and page 28 for the finished floor and to feel jealous!).

No, if you look to the right of the vertical pipe in that last picture you can see the top of a brick . . that was the original back wall of the garage.  The horizontal rainwater pipe that's there now I put in . . the wider diameter bit was existing and took a vertical rainwater pipe from the gutter at the back of the garage (originally) . . . the garage gutter now exits onto the garage extension roof, then joins the rainwater from the first shed (connected to the end of the garage extension !) . . . then it all travels down, across and underneath the shed, then turns and travels underneath the garage extension.  In a nutshell it travels around 7 metres under structures I've built to re-join the soak-away in it's original position !!!

Also, there is a good garage build thread here for some lunch-time browsing

Cool.  Will have a nosey . . .

Spent a couple more hours out there over the last few nights . . .

Got the sand/mud dug out and the area fairly level and swept for the new concrete slab.

(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/Mini%20Projects/IMAG1282_zpsiukvqjss.jpg) (http://s30.photobucket.com/user/Roadkill-Auto/media/Mini%20Projects/IMAG1282_zpsiukvqjss.jpg.html)

I decided to under-cut the extension slab to help add stability and hopefully help bond the two together . . . I'll pack the concrete under so it fills the gaps nicely.

(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/Mini%20Projects/IMAG1283_zpshk6b3oh9.jpg) (http://s30.photobucket.com/user/Roadkill-Auto/media/Mini%20Projects/IMAG1283_zpshk6b3oh9.jpg.html)

I also knocked another row of brick off the old garage back wall, chiseled-off the cement and crud then drilled and inserted 7 x 12mm diameter grade 8.8 bolts.  The point of these were to help, again, to tie the slabs together.  The join here is effectively a stepped butt-joint so fairly susceptible to movement (not that I think it'll be an issue) so the bolts will act as a stitch to resist any potential movement.

(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/Mini%20Projects/IMAG1284_zpsh2tulawm.jpg) (http://s30.photobucket.com/user/Roadkill-Auto/media/Mini%20Projects/IMAG1284_zpsh2tulawm.jpg.html)

Lastly, I exposed more of the rainwater pipe, broke away more concrete at either end, ready for lowering it (an act that'll have to be done in dry weather, obviously).  I removed the two small risers over the soak-away pipe which should be just enough to lower everything with minimal work . . . . I should've done this when I built the extension, really.  Lessons learnt.

The existing lid (sitting off to the right) will be re-used.

I got the rainwater/soak-away pipe re-routed over the weekend, a tiny bit more mud removed for clearance and a last bit of concrete broken away.

I'm now all set for concreting the new slab so will be buying materials on Friday (pay day  )

I wasn't going to concrete-in the re-routed soak-away but rather do something a bit more clever with it . . . . on further consideration, though, concreting it in will be simpler and stronger and I don't see any reason why there'd be an issue with it (it does leave me with few options in the future though).

Not much I can afford to do until then except have a hoover up . . . the whole garage has a kind of dusty orange tinge to it.

How will you concrete it in? Simply cover the pipe in concrete? Will it damage it when it it expands when drying? ??? :pass:

Yeah, just cover it over . . there's not enough weight of concrete to damage the pipe and the concrete will shrink, if anything, not expand due to the moisture loss . . .

What about if you ever needed to take the floor up again?

Is it worth placing a metal shield over the top of the pipe so that if you were to take the floor back up, you would hammer into the shield rather than the pipe?  :pass:
Title: Re: Announcing - Project Garage Mk II - The uber extension !!!
Post by: Roadkill on March 17, 2015, 09:33:44 am
That is the risk and that is why I was going to do something like that, surrounding the pipe with pea-shingle and having a metal inspection panel . . . . . . however, realistically, IF there's ever a problem with it, I've kind of run out of options with it.

If the soak-away becomes blocked or starts backing-up, it's always the soak-away itself that's the issue, not the pipe(s) leading up to it so having access wouldn't help.

If there was an issue, the best I could do is dig another soak-away and re-route the plumbing to that . . . . . . . or exit the run-off onto a neighbour's garden !!!

I really, really, really hope I don't need to.

I've considered all possibilities and eventualities (both realistic and totally unrealistic) and none require the floor (in that area, at least) being taken up again.

He says . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

With the Screed, can you just lay it on top of the cement you have just put down? Will it just bond to it? ???
Title: Re: Announcing - Project Garage Mk II - The uber extension !!!
Post by: Roadkill on March 24, 2015, 09:29:13 am
Yeah, basically.

I'll let the concrete go-off first, then sweep and hose-down the floor to make sure there's no dust or grit.

Most screeds are "self-leveling" (they're not, but close) . . . but most aren't suitable for garages.
I'll be going for a Wickes one I've read about that's designed for heavy use - it's more expensive but it has fibres in it to help knit it together.  As a result it's even harder to level, apparently, so I'm not looking forward to that at all !!

After the screed is done, I can concentrate on adding a bit of bling in there.

Probably up to 25mm thick in places, but down to around 5mm if it all goes right.

I've been treading water on this one as the next out lay is a big one (the screed) plus I'm not looking forward to doing it.

BUT, it has to happen . . . the garage was cleared of all the remaining crap at the weekend and has been treated to two coats of sealer (to increase the workable time of the screed).

I've also started putting in some timbers under the "outcrop" of wall where I removed the old floor from underneath it.  It's completely unsupported (just wedged in place) so need to add some support before moving much further (plus the timber was a freebie so that's good).

I've got a few bits to do but the plan, currently, is to screed the floor this weekend . . . I'm hoping one of the days are overcast as that'll also slow the rate of drying.

As I said, had been treading water on this, but starting spending all available minutes last week getting it ready for screed.

Installed some chunky timber under the wall that was hanging and filled the gap behind with crazy foam (timber and foam was left over from work jobs so FOC)

(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/Mini%20Projects/IMAG1519_zpspgjxnndv.jpg) (http://s30.photobucket.com/user/Roadkill-Auto/media/Mini%20Projects/IMAG1519_zpspgjxnndv.jpg.html)

Put 1 x coat of stabilising solution on the lower portion of brickwork (to prevent loose debris falling in the wet screed during application).

(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/Mini%20Projects/IMAG1520_zpsygyoufuz.jpg) (http://s30.photobucket.com/user/Roadkill-Auto/media/Mini%20Projects/IMAG1520_zpsygyoufuz.jpg.html)

Put 2 x Coats of sealer (to keep the dust down) and 1 x coat of primer on the floor (ready for the screed).

(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/Mini%20Projects/IMAG1518_zpslzogpe0o.jpg) (http://s30.photobucket.com/user/Roadkill-Auto/media/Mini%20Projects/IMAG1518_zpslzogpe0o.jpg.html)

Then fitted a steel (zintec) threshold plate at the front to give me a level to start screeding from and also to provide the roller shutter a nice seal . . . up to this point the door has closed onto the uneven concrete so draughts are common and even leaves manage to get under !   This shouldn't happen anymore with the new threshold plate.  Hopefully.

On to the screeding - about 30 minutes of prep, followed by 60 minutes of solid, frantic mixing and pouring by myself and Ian and :

Smoooooooooooth

Did you level it in anyway using a tool?

The screed is "self leveling" . . . It does some of the work for you because its runny but it does need encouragement.

When I'd done screeding before I mixed and poured myself and used a trowel to smooth it . . . . it was drying too fast so ended up being good for a first attempt but crap if it was on show (which is was never planned to be so O.K).

This time I used a spiked roller (it helps take the trapped air bubbles out) and that itself did most of the leveling work . . . . I used a trowel, really, only to blend the lines a little between the separate pours . . . . as Ian was doing most of the mixing there were little-to-no breaks between the pours so it all blended much better.

So, yes, I did use tools to level it but it does go a long way on leveling itself.

I order some floor paint yesterday too . . . went for a mid-grey colour this time, rather than a blue . . . Should make it a bit brighter in there when the door's shut.

Floor is now painted with 3 coats of paint . . . must admit, I wasn't impressed with the paint . . It was runny and the finish I got was barely satin, whereas it should've been gloss.

That said, I've got to crack on so the Caddy will be coming back in the garage (even though there's still bits to finish off in there) as the Camaro needs to come home.

a nice job.....

ive screeded a floor at my brothers self build,
it involves tons of sharp sand and cement laid almost dry

what you have done there is poured some self levelling compound

here is some real screeding ...... ;)

I guess you could consider RK's method a new way of Screeding?

If I achieved that kind of finish and it is durable, I would be very happy with it!   :cowboy:

Art, true.  Very true.

A misuse of the word indeed.   :can:

CP, Proper screeding is done during the build (after the DPM) and can be - I believe - 100mm / 4" thick.  It's sand and cement, as Art says.  A lot of dwellings nowadays use this as a base for the floor (often a "timber" sat over polystyrene sheet arrangement).

You'll be hard-pushed to find many screeders as good as the guy in the video, so often the finish isn't 100% . . . which doesn't matter if timber is being chucked down on top . . . if you want a very good finish (say for vinyl) it's normal to then apply self-leveling compund.

You basically get two types of this, one that's suited to a thin skim 3mm-12mm (for example) and deep base ones that are suited up to 50mm (per layer) . . . thicker ones often have fibres in to help "knit" them together (imagine fibreglass) but they are all applied in a "liquid" state, whereas screed mix is "solid".

But, yes, you can use self leveling compound in place of screed - you'd need to build the layers up if going up to 100mm but the biggest draw-back is cost.  Screed is made from 3 ingredients (sand, cement, water), two of which are cheap (sand and water), the other pretty cheap . . . SLC is expensive and, due to it's higher water content will dry much slower.

Thanks for explaining!

That is a great finish either way!

Further to my repairs to the under-sink cupboard last September, there's been a change of purpose to that cupboard (all part of a much bigger master plan).

As such, the cupboard (that's never been the same after the "great flood") will have all its contents re-located to the main shed and will shortly be ripped out . . . . And replaced with a new cupboard and worktop !

Sounds daft, don't it ?

With the amount of improvements and rework you manage to do, just imagine if you did buy your neighbour's garage, all that extra space to.... build, rebuild, build, rebuild!   :diy: :silly:

I did make a very very reasonable offer to buy the garage next door but he was having none of it.   ???

It's not a brewery extension (although that would be cool) - it's far less interesting than that . . . .

Currently I have the worktop on that back wall which has three cupboards in it (1000mm unit under the sink for jack and stands, 400mm unit currently empty and a 300mm unit which houes my P.C) . . . the sink and taps are set into the worktop and there's a twin-gang socket in the worktop too.

Since the "great flood" I've kept the isolator valves to the sink predominantly closed . . . meaning, if you have grubby hands, it's easier just to wash them in the kitchen than faff about getting a screw-driver, opening up the valves and cleaning them in the garage . . . as such, the sink and taps haven't really been used in the last couple of years.
Also, with the additional space the sheds have given me, keeping my array of junk outside means it's better organised so the cupboards are also generally unused.

So.  The plan.  Briefly.

In the adjacent room (the conservatory I built in 2011) is a worktop and cupboard unit I built over a washing machine and tumble dryer (which were moved out there to free-up space in the kitchen in late 2011) . . . We never used the conservatory much in the beginning (usual issues - too cold in the winter, too hot in the summer) but had blinds installed a while back that makes it much more pleasant now . . . meaning that the worktop/cupboard/washing machine etc . .  now bug me as they eat up room in the conservatory (which we now use daily***).

With the obvious space in the garage currently wasted (and plumbing already in place) it makes perfect sense to move the washing machine and tumble dryer into the garage (while totally rebuilding and replacing the old, water-damaged units), removing the redundant sink, replace the worktop (with something a little more pimp) and actually using the space again.
The knock-on effect is that the conservatory will be totally open and provide a big, usable space (for various uses), while not - if I'm honest - costing me any real space in the garage.

The *** bit :

The conservatory itself is currently in the middle of being re-purposed itself . . . I spent much of last winter testing costs (using a smart meter) to heat the area.  It was costing around 24p / hour to heat it with an electric heater, but only 2p / hour to heat it by opening up the doors and allowing the central heating (from inside the main house) to heat the room, plus the central heating was better at providing an even heat.

So, this year I've increased the insulation to the conservatory more, and installed 2 radiators that will be connected to the main system later this year.

Hopefully, if all goes to plan (Hahaha), this winter we should see the conservatory open to the house at all times, have more space as a whole and see a considerable reduction in the heating bills - even in deepest winter !!

And, and . . . . The conservatory will mark the start of a house-wide refurbishment (nothing major, just a refresh but it's much needed - IMO).

Ta-dah !!!!

Forgot about this one last night . . .

So.

First job was to strip-out the existing set-up.

Spent some time clearing the garage recently (the Caddy's out so I can - eventually - work on the Camaro's hood).

One thing that became quickly apparent is that I had a stack of aluminium chequer plate that I had laser-cut last year but hadn't fitted.  The point of it was to cover the voids and damage left by reducing the floor height back to the original.

More on that later . . . .

I'd had two plates made for the doors that lead through to the "office" but never posted any pics . . . these were fitted last year.

Before -

(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/Mini%20Projects/11707862_10207191546217242_6541213056770137735_n_zpsdbryupqs.jpg) (http://s30.photobucket.com/user/Roadkill-Auto/media/Mini%20Projects/11707862_10207191546217242_6541213056770137735_n_zpsdbryupqs.jpg.html)

After -

(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/Mini%20Projects/11800193_10207191547697279_8364116462830614689_n_zpsziowg4tl.jpg) (http://s30.photobucket.com/user/Roadkill-Auto/media/Mini%20Projects/11800193_10207191547697279_8364116462830614689_n_zpsziowg4tl.jpg.html)

I started fitting the lower plates on Sunday and did a bit more last night before running out of screws (plus it got pretty late).

Here's where it is at the mo -

(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/Mini%20Projects/20160711_215126_zpszvgmzvxg.jpg) (http://s30.photobucket.com/user/Roadkill-Auto/media/Mini%20Projects/20160711_215126_zpszvgmzvxg.jpg.html)

At this stage I realise I haven't updated the progress at the other end, either . . .

(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/Mini%20Projects/20160711_215148_zps9savrdzv.jpg) (http://s30.photobucket.com/user/Roadkill-Auto/media/Mini%20Projects/20160711_215148_zps9savrdzv.jpg.html)

:chiny:

I need more pics.

Where's CP ?

Got the last of the chequer plate fitted on Tuesday night and finished the gaps and joins with a nice thick bead of silicone (the theory is that I can now scrub the floor / hose-out the garage if needed).

(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c307/Roadkill-Auto/Mini%20Projects/20160713_194409_zpsmfdodwm9.jpg) (http://s30.photobucket.com/user/Roadkill-Auto/media/Mini%20Projects/20160713_194409_zpsmfdodwm9.jpg.html)

After the extensive dust created during the concrete slab job last year, the plan is to re-paint the walls and ceiling to freshen things up in there - but that's for later.

I'm calling this mini-project done.

******************************************

And who says I never finish a project ?  :smirk:

I finished installing the units and worktop in the "other" end last year, then gave it a full re-paint early this year.  After that I had the new flooring put down (to match that in the conservatory / back of the house).

The appliances went in and since then the room has gone from one that I occasionally used but was generally shut-off from the rest of the house to a room that's used daily by all members of the household.

But - as always - there were some jobs left to do . . . . .

After the extensive re-fit, the window frame needed repairs and a repaint (glossing !!!!!!) so naturally got left in favour of other jobs.

I finished the painting on Tuesday, cleaned and re-sealed the window/frame yesterday and finished the cutting in this morning.

Ta-dah !

Another project all done !
