General Banter / Advice needed - daily driver
« on: March 29, 2007, 03:58:57 pm »
Alrighty, here's the dilema.

I currently dirve 110 miles a day back and forth to work (will not be moving closer or swapping jobs anytime soon).

And the time has come to replace my current daily driver. At the present the role is filled by a 1999 Peugeot 106 1.5 straight diesel.

The only good thing I can say about it is, it is economical. 60mpg is common and have clocked it at a max of 66mpg.

The rest of the car is pretty crap though.

Now the replacement needs to be reliable, comfortable and where possible fun or different.

Sadly I don't earn a fortune so running cost mean that 40-50mpg is going to be needed. However with the possibility of LPG conversions it dose open up the avenue to more options which would still be affordable on a weekly basis.

So I'm looking for suggestions. Budget is from as cheap as possible (£1000) to £4500 if it seems interesting enough (including the cost of any conversions or importing).

Current thoughts:

-Subaru Justy 1.3

Pros:
Cheap to buy
Reliable
Economical
4wd
A tad different from other hatches

Cons:
Boring
Dull
Boring
and of course Dull

-Ford Thunderbird 4.6 LX (1997 model)

Pros:
Very cool and nice looking
Fast
V8
American
Individual
Comfy
Auto

Cons:
Finding a low milage one
Would have to be imported and SVA'd
Cost of LPG conversion

- my current Camaro z/28

Pros:
Already own it
Fast, good looking, comfy, etc.

Cons:
Cost of LPG conversion
Putting lots of miles on my "best" car
Limiting furture mods due to running LPG
Small range if small LPG tanks used

Anyone got some decent suggestions???

General Banter / LPG conversion?
« on: March 26, 2007, 03:37:44 pm »
Anyone have any experience or can recommend where I can look at getting an LPG conversion.

I'm seriously thinking of promoting my Camaro z/28 upto daily driver. It's comfy, nice to drive has all the goodies, is fast and fun.

Downside is I do 110 miles a day usually (probably nearer to 600 a week) so 24MPG on regualr 95RON is a bit too pricey for me.

However with LPG @ 45-48p per litre it become a more realistic proposition.

Also the higher octane of the LPG will be ideally suited for when I add the supercharger

General Banter / John Cleese - Letter to America
« on: March 08, 2007, 03:07:47 pm »
To the citizens of the United States of America, in the light of your failure to elect a competent President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective today.

Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths and other territories. Except Utah, which she does not fancy. Your new prime minister (The Right Honourable Tony Blair, MP for the 97.85% of you who have until now been unaware that there is a world outside your borders) will appoint a minister for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire will be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed. To aid in the transition to a British Crown Dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

1. You should look up revocation in the Oxford English Dictionary. Then look up aluminium. Check the pronunciation guide. You will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it. The letter 'U' will be reinstated in words such as 'favour' and 'neighbour', skipping the letter 'U' is nothing more than laziness on your part. Likewise, you will learn to spell 'doughnut' without skipping half the letters. You will end your love affair with the letter 'Z' (pronounced 'zed' not 'zee') and the suffix ize will be replaced by the suffix ise. You will learn that the suffix 'burgh' is pronounced 'burra' e.g. Edinburgh. You are welcome to respell Pittsburgh as 'Pittsberg' if you can't cope with correct pronunciation.

Generally, you should raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. Look up vocabulary. Using the same twenty seven words interspersed with filler noises such as "like" and "you know" is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. Look up interspersed. There will be no more 'bleeps' in the Jerry Springer show. If you're not old enough to cope with bad language then you shouldn't have chat shows. When you learn to develop your vocabulary then you won't have to use bad language as often.

2. There is no such thing as "US English". We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take account of the reinstated letter 'u' and the elimination of -ize.

3. You should learn to distinguish the English and Australian accents. It really isn't that hard. English accents are not limited to cockney,upper-class twit or Mancunian (Daphne in Frasier). You will also have to learn how to understand regional accents - Scottish dramas such as Taggart will no longer be broadcast with subtitles. While we're talking about regions, you must learn that there is no such place as Devonshire in England. The name of the county is Devon. If you persist in calling it Devonshire, all American States will become shires e.g. Texasshire, Floridashire, Louisianashire.

4. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as the good guys. Hollywood will be required to cast English actors to play English characters. British sit-coms such as Men Behaving Badly or Red Dwarf will not be re-cast and watered down for a wishy-washy American audience who can't cope with the humour of occasional political incorrectness.

5. You should relearn your original national anthem, God Save The Queen but only after fully carrying out task 1. We would not want you to get confused and give up half

6. You should stop playing American football. There is only one kind of football. What you refer to as American football is not a very good game. The 2.15% of you who are aware that there is a world outside your borders may have noticed that no one else plays American football. You will no longer be allowed to play it, and should instead play proper football. Initially, it would be best if you played with the girls. It is a difficult game. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which is similar to American "football", but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like nancies). We are hoping to get together at least a US Rugby sevens side by 2005. You should stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the 'World Series' for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.15% of you are aware that there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. Instead of baseball, you will be allowed to play a girls' game called rounders, which is baseball without fancy team strip, oversized gloves, collector cards or hotdogs.

7. You will no longer be allowed to own or carry guns. You will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous in public than a vegetable peeler. Because we don't believe you are sensible enough to handle potentially dangerous items, you will require a permit if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.

8. July 4th is no longer a public holiday. November 2nd will be a new national holiday, but only in England. It will be called Indecisive Day.

9. All American cars are hereby banned. They are crap and it is for your own good. When we show you German cars, you will understand what we mean. All road intersections will be replaced with roundabouts. You will start driving on the left with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and conversion tables. Roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour.

10. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips. Fries aren't even French, they are Belgian though 97.85% of you (including the guy who discovered fries while in Europe) are not aware of a country called Belgium. Those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut and fried in animal fat. The traditional accompaniment to chips is beer which should be served warm and flat. Waitresses will be trained to be more aggressive with customers.

11. As a sign of penance 5 grams of sea salt per cup will be added to all tea made within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, this quantity to be doubled for tea made within the city of Boston itself.

12. The cold tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all, it is lager. From November 1st only proper British Bitter will be referred to as beer, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as Lager. The substances formerly known as American Beer will henceforth be referred to as Near-Frozen Knat's Urine, with the exception of the product of the American Budweiser company whose product will be referred to as Weak Near-Frozen Knat's Urine. This will allow true Budweiser (as manufactured for the last 1000 years in Pilsen,Czech Republic) to be sold without risk of confusion.

13. From November 10th the UK will harmonise petrol (or Gasoline, as you will be permitted to keep calling it until April 1st 2005) prices with the former USA. The UK will harmonise its prices to those of the former USA and the Former USA will, in return, adopt UK petrol prices (roughly $6/US gallon- get used to it).

14. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you're not adult enough to be independent. Guns should only be handled by adults. If you're not adult enough to sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist then you're not grown up enough to handle a gun.

15. Please tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us crazy.

16. Tax collectors from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all revenues due (backdated to 1776).

Thank you for your co-operation and have a great day.

John Cleese

General Banter / UK customers shafted once again - new Jeep Wrangler
« on: March 06, 2007, 04:56:34 pm »
For I while now I've been eagerly awaiting news on the new Jeep Wrangler (JK).

I've always had a fond spot for the Jeep and have more than once contemplated getting a YJ.

However if I buy yet another car it really ought to be newer and slightly more practical than the cars I normally look at.

So for many months I've been following the progress of the new JK in the States. And I've been very impressed, it looks fantastic and is available in a multitude of different models and options packages.

The one I'm interested in is the 2 door Rubicon as it comes with a whole host of off road extra's and looks the muts nuts.

The only downer in the States is the only engine option is the 3.8 V6, not a bad engine but I'd rather have a diesel for low end grunt and MPG considerations.

Today I noticed Jeep.co.uk's website now had info on the UK spec JK.

What a TOTAL dissapointment!!!!

Sure there's a diesel offering, sadly it's the 2.8 and not the hinted at 3.0 variant. Yet this is a minor blow compared to the rest of diatribe offered.

In short nearly all the options list hasn't made it across the pond. The lower spec model is only available with a diesel (manual only) and none of the off road gear.

The showy Sahara is auto only and still only diesel (no petrol) and again no off road gear.

The Rubicon has made it, but no diesel engine????? only the 3.8 V6 and no manual either and to add insult to injuary there's no air con available on it either, even though it's the range topper and air con is standard kit on it in the US.

They can't even offer something simple like red paint, which again is available in the States, there's a very small colour chioce here in the UK and all metallic.

I also really can not understand the fact that Rubicon is only availble as a petrol auto, firstly auto's are not the norm in the UK and more importantly any UK off roader will generally say diesel and manual gearbox is the way to go (just take a look at Land Rover Defenders, diesels with manuals).

And to top is all the UK models look like they're going to have an ugly variant of the plastic bumper as well:

The 4 door Wrangler has made it over here as well but has suffered even more as the Rubicon isn't even offered as a 4 door here. Plus the ugly bumper seems to have got even more ugly:

Jeep UK do youever wonder why you struggle to sell certain models...

Seems like we have record high water table levels here in the UK at the moment (and a frigging hose pipe ban as well ). So decided to go fording today as there as some really good fords not far away.

Haven't done this for years. There's about 9 fords in total however I only grossed 8 today, one was just too deep!!!!

This one was the deepest I went thru, and yes it did get the carpets wet.

However the Discovery 3 seemed to take it in it's stride, their suspension really lifts them quite high for a stock vehicle, much higher than my Discovery rides anyhow, although you can see the water is still half way up the doors on this the LR3.

I don't have a pic of the deepest ford, but it's about 60-80 yards long and you actually drive up the river a way. I did go part way in but deemed it a tad too deep plus it was very slippy and traction was an issue.

The water level was well over half way up the doors as you can see by the water mark, and no it's not a splash it really was that deep and a little too close to the air intake for my liking.

The Discovery performed superbly, even more so as I'd done ZERO prep work for this. It NEVER missed a beat all day, the only thing that happened was the power steering belt slipped when wet so made the steering a little heavy when leaving the water. But that's it!!!!

Go diesel power!!!

Oh I did end up with a little moisture in my spot lamps though

2006 Report & 2007 Update

Hello all,

Please take a moment to read this email which includes the report on 2006 and details of 2007’s event. It also includes a couple of other local events which may be of interest to you. Please note I am in the process of moving house my current address is on the booking form I will send an updated form to all those who haven’t booked by the time I move.

2006

After the poor weather of 2005 we returned to our more glorious sunshine. The Park & Ride scheme for spectators proved popular and I was very grateful to John Tarbox from Pan Autos who stepped in to sponsor the scheme and covered all its costs.

We received lots of positive feedback on the night and post event. We had very few moans on the night, always a great relief!

In 2005 we were able to donate just over £3,000 to local charities/good causes. In 2006 we blew that record out of the water and almost doubled it, donating £5,800 as follows;

Grove House Hospice              £2,000

Roundwood Park School                      £1,700

The Lea School                                    £500

RNLI                                                   £750

Police Cadets                                       £200

Pasque Hospice                                    £200

Red Cross Harpenden                          £150

Herts Police Widows & Orphans          £300

As always very many thanks to all of those who help, it wouldn’t be possible to organise without the support of those who help set up, steward, offer advise & support and all of you who attend and enjoy.

Classics on the Common

Wednesday 25th July 2007

The date is now set for Wednesday 25th July and I am ready to start taking your entries, an entry form is included with this email. The entry fee remains the same £3 it will hopefully be the best £3 you spend all year! This years main beneficiaries will be Sir John Lawes School and Harpenden Phoenix Holidays (the Jumbulance which provides holidays for the disabled).

The website has not yet been updated it will be shortly, once I move.

This year we will again be asking the Town Council for permission to use the Hayfield for spectator parking, if you are a Harpenden resident and happen to be in contact with your Town Councillor please let them know your views. If you require any more information on the issue please feel free to contact me.

A number of entrants over the years have asked why the event is on a Wednesday evening and why we don’t move it to a Sunday. It’s always been on a Wednesday because it originally started as an evening picnic, as it grew I think a part of its charm is that it’s different and its timing. I’m willing to consider moving it to a Sunday, it would certainly make the traffic easier. Please let me know what you think.

As in recent years we do not anticipate allowing any entry on the night without a pre-booked entry pass. To try to avoid any confusion all vehicles who want to come onto the Common including scooters and motorbikes should have an entry pass. So please don’t leave your entry too late and PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO INCLUDE A STAMPED ADDRESSED ENVELOPE with your entry form. At a peak I get and have to process 30-40 entries a day, and it makes it surprisingly more time consuming when I have to write out envelopes.

I’m pleased to announce that once again Harpenden Village Rotary Club will be assisting us with the event they very kindly get more and more involved each year to the point where we now couldn’t manage without them.

Two other event you might like to consider;

Suggestions / New forum idea?

How about lthe addition of a "Street & Drag Racing" forum.

As part of owning an American muscle car is about using it's muscle, we should have somewhere to promote performance and racing related topics.

General Banter / GM part number needed...
« on: January 02, 2007, 04:12:05 pm »
Alright there & happy new year.

Ok without wanting to divulge too much info somehow the hazard warning swich has been broken off in my Camaro.

It's on the steering column just in front of the ignition barrel.

Anyone know the part number for the switch at all?

Also the cowling over the column doesn't appear to come off, I guess you have to take the steering wheel off to get at the switch, anyone got any info on doing this?

The Heynes manual only seems to cover the hazard flasher unit, which in this instance is of no help.

Could really do with some help on this as at the moment the hazzards are either on all the time, or if I pull the fuse out I stop them flashing but have no brake lights.

BTW - the car is a 1999 Camaro z/28 LS1 auto (Euro spec).

Cheers.

General Banter / Performance stats
« on: December 04, 2006, 03:35:06 pm »
Here's something some of you petrol heads may find interesting.

This was the result of some extensive testing recently in Germany to see how fast these production cars really are. The tests where made as fair as possible and as reproduciable as possible and where timed using multiple GPS timing equipment.

It shows just what good value both the C6 Z06 and Ford GT really are. Almost level with the £300,000 Mercedes SLR.

Enjoy! :D

General Banter / Sunday...
« on: December 04, 2006, 11:15:51 am »
Sorry for missing the meet on Sunday.

But when I went out too the car I found I had a screw sticking out of one of the rear tyres

I did put the spare on of course, but quite frankly it looks rediculus being that it's only a 135 section tyre plus it makes the car lean heavily to one side.

Hope you all had a good time, and I guess I'll have to try and catch you at the January meet.

810 HP/745 FT/LB KENNE BELL BIG BORE 2.8H SHELBY GT 500 KIT

On November 9th Kenne Bell made history. Our new 2.8H("H" for 2.0 high pressure ratio) Big Bore Twin Screw kit recorded an incredible 810 hp and 745 ft/lbs(SAE corrected). Our Earl's Automotive test car was 100% stock except for cooler plugs, a Kenne Bell boost-a-pump and optional throttle body and inlet system. That's with a stock fuel system (lines, rails, pumps and injectors) through stock cats and exhaust. No headers, cams, nitrous etc., only the 2.8H kit. All with an ultra efficient, compact and lightweight 2L series Twin Screw. The supercharger itself is so efficient that bolting on the big discplacement 2.8H with the same size stock 3" pulley increased power by 125hp(606 vs 481) over the Eaton 122 (2.0L). Same pulley size - same tune. Only a kit change with 100% stock car. The kits HP range is 568 - 810. Preliminary tests indicate it can make 725 hp on pump gas at 16 psi. The new supercharger is so efficient that 1 psi of boost is 25 hp. Remember the "H" series requires less engine HP to drive, By upgrading pulleys(12-20 psi) and optional inlet components(throttle body and cool air kit) there's plenty of room to grow.
Preliminary testing indicates the Shelby makes 725HP on pump gas at only 16 psi and 810 hp at 19 psi. The unusually high HP output is possible because of the 2.8 H's radical 2.0 internal pressure ratio. Other 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4 Twin Screws use a 1.4 built in internal pressure ratio. The new design Kenne Bell 2.8H consumes up to 40 less engine HP to drive, that means 40 more rear wheel HP at the SAME boost. Discharge air temps is also 30 degrees cooler at high boost levels. These two 2.8H features(less parasitic HP loss and lower air temps) are responsible for it's unusually high HP levels.
Equally important to the overall high effeciency of the kit is the cavernous high flow 1000 hp + inlet and a huge new Kenne Bell dual 75mm throttle body. Both were developed on our new 1000 hp flow bench.
Our goal was to engineer a flexible kit with a compact lightweight, highly efficient - low parasitic loss billet twin screw that would make all the HP 99% of our customers would ever need. 810 hp and 670 ft/lbs at only 2500 rpm is more than enough to exceed the design limits of the stock engine and drive train.
Literature and Tech Tips will be posted on our website on Dec. 15th. or sooner. Next we'll gut the cats and test headers, exhaust and cams on the dyno and drag strip. Earl will be doing all the driving. The "Shelby Tech Tips" will include everything we've learned about the car's fuel system, ignition, clutch, inlet system, calibration etc. along with 50 dyno tests from the stock 444hp / 428 ft/lbs to 810 hp / 745 ft/lbs.
We have 2 months of development time and over 500 dyno runs on the Shelby. It is the most exciting, efficient and insanely powerful production engine we've ever done a kit for. By comparison, our GT Supercar made 710hp with a 2.3 Lysholm and Kenne Bell HCD Drive Conversion with 2 1/2 pulley. The KB 2.8 H Shelby made 810 with the same 2 1/2 pulley, throttle body, tune etc.The heads, cams and CR are also the same for both engines, the Supercar even having a perceived power edge with it's exhaust and dry sump. Yet the KB 2.8H equipped Shelby developed another 100 hp (810 vs. 710). The 2.8H is definitely capable of pumping 800 + HP into these engine. Kits should be available Jan. 15, 2007 or hopefully sooner. Again, our kits are designed so yu can customize the desired HP by selecting the pulley, cool air kit and dual 75mm throttle body. Tuner kits are also available and no problems with the pulley to hood clearance at the lower boost/HP levels. 25 HP increments from 568 - 810 with a direct bolt on on upgrade kit and all stock engine components.

The first dyno graph is the KB 2.8H Shelby kit vs. Ford GT Lysholm 2.3 kit with same 2 1/2 pulleys, same timing, and same A/F ratio.

The second dyno graph is the same KB 2.8 Shelby kit vs. stock Shelby Eaton 122 with same 2 1/2 pulley, same timing, same A/F ratio.

General Banter / Raced a Lotus Elise
« on: November 08, 2006, 10:31:20 am »
On my way home last night a nice silver MK1 Elise pulled out infront of me, sadly they where driving like a total twat, far too much traffic on a single lane road. Still their aftermarket exhaust sounded pretty decent.

Anyhow followed them for 5 miles or so until the road turns into dual carriage way.

Raced them 3 or 4 times from various speeds. Man I was really surprised, it wasn't even a race I just walked them. First one was from like 50/60mph I kept the pedal down until I saw 130'ish just to prove the point. I think they where best part of an 1/8th of a mile back

I really thought it would have been closer. And yeah they certainly where trying as on some of the runs they started infront of me, or I let them have the hit.
