thank gawd we had the forethought to join the euro, enabling trade with other euro zone countries to remain stable by eliminating fluctuation in exchange rates.. imagine the egg on our faces had the euro zone contracted slower than the UK economy...

While that is true Sterling has always been a significant currency far more significant than most of the European currencies.
London is a major player on the world financial markets and our banking industry is highly regarded.
