Think this counts as a mini project now!!

Seeing as the tires on the BBQ are at least 10 years old and it's stood for almost 3 maybe 4 years now, and i'm intending on using it in May, thought today would be a good day (as weather was nice) to sort getting the wheels off to get new rubber on them, plus give the brakes and over-hall (as they never been brilliant and a bit squirelly when braking).

Took the wheels off without too much trouble, so the BBQ now sits like this:

Gave the underside a check over and it's held up really well, springs and chassis look all good underneath:

Once i'd got the wheels off, took the drum's off and the 'passenger' / left side didn't look too bad:

Shame can't say the same for the 'driver' / right side.....explains why the brakes wern't working as well this side:

Checked online and the bearings are nice and cheap and easy to get (as they are a bit graunching and knackered), need to just track down what the correct oil seal is as need new one's of them as well - the sizes online don't seem to link up with what the one i've got is.....

Going to try this week to track down a new set of shoes & drums and hope they are still available ( as the drum on the left is totally contaminated and has to be replaced!) - know of one place in MK that might do it (intertruck?)

So Shopping list to get it back on it's wheels:

Inner & Out Bearings
Inner Oil Seals (outers are just a flat washer)
Shoes
Drums
Tires

Will then put it back together then sort the wiring as needs looking at as lights not working correctly

Shoes look salvageable to me, as do the drums . . . just a good soak in a washing-up bowl of thinners and a scrub ?

It's not like it does loads of miles ?

:pass:

Hmm i'm not sure as they look to be reallllly soaked in all the grease / oil that was leaking as does the drum - the drum maybe salvageable with a re-cut but TBH i'd prefer to put a new pair on it and have both sides with an equal braking force

Cunning Plan

Good safety project here, it needed to be fixed as you said!  :nono2:

Spoke to a company in MK today and they seemed pretty confident that they can help out - Shoes can be sent for re-lining , seals & bearings can be matched via part numbers they found , drums maybe an issue but they'll see and let me know!

Well after a busy ol week, finally got some parts sorted:

Tires - 2 new tires now fitted and waiting to go back on - £120
New Brake shoes ordered - £105
New Bearing Kit ordered - £45

Having chatted to the guy where i getting the parts from we're both of the opinion that the drum **should** clean up with a good soaking of brake cleaner, so gunna try that as the drums are £120 EACH!

Just hoping the parts turn up in time as need to get it put back together before next friday!!!!

 All seems very expensive? :chiny:

What did the trailer used to be before the BBQ?  :pass:

Yes and no - it was a caravan in it's previous life so that add's to the price, plus it's an old chasis and the manufacturer of the brakes / drums / bearings have long gone out of business, so they had to track down parts for me....and when you think of it call it 100 works out and 25 a shoe, can't recollect if that was new OR  a reline of existing shoe....

bearing isn't too bad as thats for Inner bearing, outer bearing and the associated oil seals.....

Roadkill

I hope for your sake you - or we - get some use out if it to justify the expense and agro.

ianjpage

Yeah thats one of the reasons I am doing it so that it does get used more therefore justifying and negating the costs

Incursus

I thought it was to go the way of the Point  but good effort
Does anyone still a vehicle capable of towing it?

Yes & no, got the omega, although it's out of MOT end this month, but something will be sorted before then  :secure:
