There's something wrong with my PC and despite efforts on my part I can't see how to fix it.
Symptoms:
- Windows Live Messenger Cannot log in because the service is unavailable
- Windows Explorer occasionally crashes
- IE always offers to restore my last session on the 1st opening after boot-up.
- Some DVD Autorun functions are crashing immediately with no resolutions available.
Main issue
- Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.
- the "Fix problems with Windows Update" Troubleshooter cannot start because a problem is preventing its operation.
Actions so far:
- Uninstalled ATI Catalyst Control Centre (because a forum suggested this could be an issue) No Change.
- Checked Windows update is actually running in Administration tools/Services – Stopped it, restarted it, rebooted & tried again – No Change
- Run a full system Virus Scan – No infections
- Run “Microsoft Fix-it” on this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 - (No changes)
I did have a virus alert a few days ago but this was contained & deleted by AVG including deleting registry entries it created, however windows update and MSN had both stopped working prior to this.
I’m not too worried about MSN for now, I just want windows update to work properly.
Anyone got any ideas? cos i'm stuck...
