I don't see how it is that different from a N/A diesel - apart from the obvious turbo, extra cooling and different strategy?

turbowiesels are designed for higher air flow rates than N/A and higher combustion chamber pressures. If you've pootled a diesel, try this. sit in neutral with a warm idling engine. floor the throttle, and hold the engine on the governor for five seconds. observe the quite remarkable smoke screen. drive it normally, and you wont get so much smoke.

piston crowns etc don't get so hot under extremely gentle use, and the sludge and soot soon gums things up.

even an NA diesel should never live at the bottom of the rev range - in fact, no engine should.

Okay makes sense.

But why does driving a car economically usually mean keeping the revs down?

My Mondeo must be really gunked! I never really go above 2k rpm

As much as I try that myself, I weekly give it a good kicking for a couple of reasons, a) Puts a smile on my face, b) reminds me why I like the car enough not to get rid of it.

I think it's a good idea to give it an Italian Tune up ever once in a while.

After reading more PhilO is right, carbon build-up seems to be the biggest issue from the cylinder not reaching a hot enough temperature to burn it off.

However, it seems this only really happens if you are doing a lot of idling such as sitting in traffic or a delivery driver. Short journeys will also have the same impact. If you drive keeping the revs low, but for long distances you are okay as the cylinders have time to heat up - which is what I do for my commute. Then every now and then, maybe once a week, I give it a blow out by over-taking quicker than I usually would.

Interesting though, always learning

Mk2 are obviously better!

Went skating last night and one of the guys there said mine was very 'retro'. Now it's only a 2000 model so 11 years old, but can you really call that retro?! Probably end up being a future classic and just like my dad saying 'oh when I was a lad them Mondeos were just yer average car!' - he came out with a similar comment when I started talking about MK1 escorts. He can't understand how or why people pay so much for them now!

and as a second car she's not quite special enough so I'll start looking for a cheap V8 of some kind (3rd gen perhaps), and a place to keep it.

Yeah loads apparently. Mostly PMST roles but I can pass your CV on to Abu, you never know. He works for a company called Altran Technologies and one of their contracts is with JLR.

No I thought about LPG but I wouldn't want to put those kinds of miles on her.

Yeah It's 40 min - 1 hour trip (one way).
I'm fairly used it now though and they pay your travel expenses.
There might be some places in Nissan, Cranfield soon.

Couldn't get over paying 75% more for and older, less specced car.

The badge ain't worth that much . . . but you know that already.

Servicing costs more too and it's got a smaller luggage capacity.

Yeah I know what your saying and totally agree with you. I've driven both many times and logically the Mondao makes far more sense...but since when have I chosen a car using my brain.

I did have a look at general service items and they weren't that bad, but then it's mostly Mondao stuff.

Honda Accord, Saab 93 and Volvo S60 are others on the list.
Though I'd probably end up with a Mondao, at least for the short term.

Anyway a lot of if's, but's and maybe's before I may have to sell the Mustang.

why limit yourself, there are some excellent alternatives out there.

How about a volvo S40 (or C70 if you are ok with a petrol) or a Pug 406 HDi (excellent car for the money - ask don shiftini) you could also look into a Saab 9-3 or a honda accord (if you can find the extra £££ - they do fetch good money). the Alfa 159 is excellent but will still fall well outside your budget, as they hold their money like crazy, and still haven't really dipped below £7k for a high miler. the 156 is getting a little old now, but a late model could be had with the 1.9 JTD for about £4k - buy carefully and they are very good cars.

Passats and A4's are ok, not exceptional, and fetch a lot more money than they are really worth.

I'd avoid the Vectra like the plague, aside from being unbearably dull, they have a lot of problems. I'd not jump for joy at an X type either, unles its the 2.5 or 3.0 neither of which are going to be any more economical than the stang (although they will be a lot quicker) the MK3 mondeo is ok, but no better than any other alternative.

whatever you go for, check the DMF carefully, on almost any car they are a £1000 repair when (not if) they fail.

again, if petrol is ok, I think a Volvo C70 would be my choice of sensible car, in orange (in fact, I was going to buy one before i bought the stang)

should fine a really nice one for £3k
