Nice plan

paint, hang on to it until its worth 20k....

To be honest, that's not a bad investment plan. Probably better than any ISA could get you right now

Classic VW's are very desirable and do appreciate in value faster than most other cars.

watched a mate make 11k on two splittys in the last couple of years
so thought id invest 3k in this bus..

the bays are only gonna go up no splittys are 18k +...

mrs b fancied one for years so its a win win situation...

Make sure you do a lot of research about the seller before you buy. There are a lot of VW engine builder cowboys out there. VZi is a good place to start:

http://www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?t=774717&highlight=ebay+engines

Could you not build the engine yourself or are you just looking for the fastest way of getting it back on the road?

The extra 41cc is not enough to overheat the engine providing ALL the tin-wear is present and correct along with the fan and dog-house shroud.

wot do ya reakon to a newer type 4 cp...

Type 4 engines do produce more power and are more economical than Type 1, however, parts are much more expensive and it is harder to modify Type 4 engines.

I would stick with the Type 1 engine as I know you are a man that likes to fettle

spoke to steve from ss engines in romford ... he has a 3 week waitin list at the mo,
he has built over 120 1641s in the last 2 years and has never had one back with issues, he puts a more toquey cam in em for buses..

building the engine my self is outta the question,
by the time its been machined and the same new parts fitted that a recon would have it will cost more..

ive spoke to peeps who have done it, and said its uneconomical

gotta couple more calls to make b4 the lump goes in the back of the car and off on its way..

I thought you just buy a replacement engine from him in exchange for your old engine which he then rebuilds for the next customer? I didn't think he was rebuilding your engine?

its the way most engine builders work at the moment,
theres no chance i will get my unit back..

engines built to order, and at this time of year they are manic with hobby type car engines,
all of the people i contacted suggested a 3 week lead time..

the guy i went to see had 10 engines on the go at various stages so i thought 3 weeks was not long, considering he doesnt work weekends as a rule,

You will have to let use know how you get on, might be a faster option for me with the long block to get my bus on the road too rather than having to machine my old engine and rebuld etc..

As it is just then adding all the fun stuff, cooling, carbs, exhaust etc..

I doubt that will work on really old joints.

I had to buy a big splitter for mine..

worked a treat....

put a jack under the slacked off ball joint nut,
lifted it up until the van moved off the stands,
left it for an hour ,
then gave it 4-5 heavy taps and pop out it came...simples

[you can just see the hammer mark below the shaft]

and heres the damaged boot.....available from gsf for £5, i bet if it was for a modern car it would be a new ball joint..

great old school mechanics for ya...

hard to belive the speedo cable is on the front wheel too, ya can see the cable coming in from the back and there is a likkle pin on the end of the white grease cover on the hub...

Looks great!! This is the exciting bit, the engine rebuild, at least it's a long block, so you can just do all the fun stuff - carb, exhaust etc..
