Ok new problem...saying that the clutch noise hasn't come back..yet...


..Anyway just before I got on the M1 this morning the Glow Plug light started flashing and there was a slight loss of power, Limp home mode I'm assuming.
This continued for the rest of the journey.

Some quick Google searches suggest anything from replacing the Crank Position sensor or cleaning the EGR valve to new fuel pump and injectors (expensive!).

Any ideas?  
I'll certainly be taking the EGR Valve off tonight as I looks like the easiest fix.

prob not relevant ....
had the same on the audi and it was a faulty brakelight switch...
 as its linked to the engine management with the abs....

Hmm just been out to see if the issue was still there.. it is and if I bring it to around 1k revs it gets lumpy and bluish smoke blows out of the exhaust.

Ah shite!

Blue smoke ain't good.

I think the Glowplug light is a catch all for emission issues, as in the ECU has picked up a nasty reading from one of the sensors. Now blue smoke means oil is being burnt if I remember correctly. Check your oil is a good start. Low or high? Has it changed since you last checked.

EGR, a mod that I did on my mk2 was block the pipe off, I stuck a ball bearing down the vacuum tube which stopped it opening, but yours could be gunked up, hook it off and give it a clean, see if it makes any difference.

The blue smoke is a bit worrying as like I said I think it'll be oil and short of holing a piston it's more likely your turbo seals could've gone. Whatever you do, do not YouTube runaway diesel engines.

When I get on a comp I'll do a bit more research, but for now check your oil and have a bash at the EGR.

Oil level looks fine, the blue smoke is only when the engine is cold and runs lumpy when reved lightly.  Drives fine when warm other than a lack of power.

Cleaned the EGR valve was slightly oily but not especially clogged..but made no difference.

Might change the camshaft position sensor tomorrow as the seems to be the next on the list of culprits.

No DTC's recorded according to the dashboard diagnostics but yes I'm trying to borrow a code reader from work.

Unfortunately I'm off work till Thursday then off to Italy so timing isn't great.


I knew I should have finished building one out of the left over bits of my Uni Dissertation

I wasn't 100% sure the dash DTC tell the full story so definitely worth plugging it in and seeing what's what. Have you posted this on any forums yet?

My airbag light came on the other day too, but now that has disappeared again so I don't give a shit.

It developed a squeak under braking 3 days ago, that has also stopped.

That was all on my MK3 Mondeo, My MK2 never has any issues

No it doesn't, but I gave it ago anyway.  Yup working on borrowing a reader but doubt it will happen before I go away and the car is booked in for next Thursday

Just noticed this thread and I was gonna say injector as I had suspected mine before but the symptoms didn't match.

Mine's on 204000 from yesterday.

Two injectors £500.. Ouch but seems to be running great at the moment.

Though I'm sure there is still a smell of diesel in side the car, I only notice it when the cars been sitting for a while after a long journey...

First noticed it a week or so before the injectors "went", couldn't find anything amiss in the engine bay, leak wise and then assumed it was injector related.

Not sure if it's still there though as I've had Man-Flu for the last week...but pretty sure I caught a wiff on Friday.  

Fuel economy seem a little low for this tank as well, probably only get 54-55.. normally get closer to 60mpg, though I have been carting a heavy load or two so not too worried yet.

117777 miles and paid for herself at least twice over and as of this month paid off my last credit card ,  so can't really complain but it would be nice to see another 6-12months out of it before, I get another one.

Right, I dunno the common rail system too well but on mine, I had spill over pipes between each injector which eventually feed back to the tank fail.

I had a situation where I suddenly started smelling fuel, lifted the back seat, the sender unit was fine, the send pipe was fine as was the return. I thought nothing more off it until one night I was flying down the M40 back from a car meet, whacked the heater on and nearly passed out from the smell of diesel. The rubber hoses had broken down and there were now hair line fractures on each one with the one at the end actually producing a small mist of fuel. I got off the motor way and the whole rhs of the bay was coated in diesel. Thinking about it I was bloody lucky it didn't go up!

Might be worth checking them out by lifting the engine cover!

Is the fuel sender still located under the rear bench? Maybe worth giving all the pipes are nice and secure.

Well I've given all the pipes I can get to without dropping the tank a once over, from injectors to tank, had the bung under the seat out and had a good look and sniff around there, with engine running and without, it all seams fine.

There was still a stink of diesel when I first opened the car door though.

I guess its a case of dropping the tank next, not looking forward to that.

And no, I don't have a jerry can of fuel in the boot.

Well another 10k miles later and looks like the "worn" injector the garaged mentioned last time has finally failed.

Or something expensive along those lines anyway.

DTC code: P0251 "Injection pump fuel metering control A".

Garage is having a look at it tomorrow, I've got my dads old XJ8 in the meantime as the Mustang isn't taxed.
