What's the word on TV's these days?
« on: November 07, 2012, 02:28:39 pm »
I've not personally bought a TV for...well about a decade!

We're looking at a ~50" as the sofa is  about a mile away from the wall we want to put it on...ok slight exaggeration but I need opera glasses to read the menu on 32" we have now and neither it or the sofa are as far back against the walls as the new one's will be.

Anyway I been researching and come up with these;
http://www.johnlewis.com/231559097/Product.aspx

http://www.johnlewis.com/231567747/Product.aspx

From what I've read, at our budget, Plasma gives the best picture for TV's in 50" range..

Not spending more than a grand, don't really give a crap about 3D and doesn't have to be all that "smart" as the TiVo box does all that.
DNLA would be nice though.

Discuss..

Love my Samsung

From when I was looking screen quality between LG and Samsung was very similar but the casing on the LG's was crap - not bad, CRAP !

Bought a new flat screen for the front room earlier this year. Best advice, go into JL, stand in the main area and look at all the displays. This is a good way if comparing them. If you want to get full on geek status, measure how far you'll be sat back from it and view them at the same distance.

We found the Samsung range d8000 at the time stood out the most.

That model I believe is now discontinued and they've moved on to Exxxx I think. Either way, Samsung LED LCD pannels are pretty amazing in HD.

Any non-digital feed however will look pretty naff. We're still running sky off a scart and the quality is bare able but sort of makes the whole panel a bit pointless.

Yup, we're going to have a look on Friday, before seeing Bond

I am veering towards the Samsung though it would have to be a plasma in our price range.

The guy at JL said if you go plasma you don't go back... No wait, you don't buy anything but Panasonic. We didn't want a plasma but he would really have only recommended the Panasonic range.

I saw a GroupOn deal for an E6000 I think the other day, 50" for about £600 which wasn't too shabby. My mate picked up a Samsung 55" LED LCD jobby for not much more.

Have you looked in CostCo as yet?
We got our 40" Samsung in there and it was a lot cheaper than buying elsewhere

I know they do have a range of 50" TV's in there for Samsung and other makes

Just noticed Comet are now having a sale after going into administration
Although people are saying the discounts aren't that big though - maybe worth a look

Yes briefly but Katie get's JL vouchers for her Xmas bonus, that and the 5 year warranty and they're never knowingly undersold...

Will have a good look next time we go though.

5 year warranty

tis standard for all major appliances - costco equally advertise the 5yr warranty though as a selling point!

I thought 5 year warranty was a statutory right as you're buying in the U.K ?  (the rest of the EU is 2 years or something like that . . )

Waiting for the "New Year" sales but this Panasonic instantly stood out amongst the others in JL, picture quality wise and at 50" is the perfect size.

After I got home I checked out the reviews and they are excellent

Techradar
hdtvtest

A bit above budget at £1199 but maybe the sales or Costco will bring us a better deal.

There was one I preferred (Big arse Telly) but I would have taken up over half the wall and cost £7500... Katie said no

Got one!!

Went to CostCo on Friday and they had £200 off last years model of the Panasonic that caught my eye in JL, went home and checked the reviews...which were just as good as for the one in JL, In fact I can't really tell what they've changed.
Went back yesterday and bought it as the offer finished today
Saved ourselves £300 for a soundbar...or more likely a bigger TV stand.

Got it all plugged in just in time for the Grand Prix

Very pleased with it so far, HD looks fantastic, SD is absolutely fine considering the size if the screen, not tried the Active 3D glasses yet..apparently they need charging..

The build quality is fantastic, even the remote is one of the highest quality I've seen in a long time...not that we'll need it as anything you can't do on the TiVo remote can be done on the phone / tablet apps

Got a movie on the tablet? flick it towards the TV and it plays on the TV!! How cool is that?

Oh and got carpet fitted, boarded the loft and finished off the front "hall"..Good weekend tbh

Also with CostCo's 90 day return policy thingy on TV's, if we do find a better deal in the Xmas/New Year sales we'll just take it back

Tried it with the TV converting 2d- 3d on an episode of ST:TNG (SyFi are showing all episodes again remastered in HD) :geek:... It does a fairly good job and you don't get the ghosting/double image you see in the cinema.

I might try it on something that was filmed in 3D at some point but for now the glasses are going back in their box..

I do wonder if these 3D tech is going to catch on. It seems a bit gimmicky and would be I retesting to see if in 2-3 years time the feature is still being used.
