Super Widescreen Monitors
« on: April 13, 2013, 12:47:36 pm »
Coming from the point of view of a Gamer  I really like this idea
I'm considering getting one of these:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-066-DE

For Games a monitor that size & shape would be really cool to use and for Films you'de be able to watch the vast majority with no Black bars which would also bee very cool.

However...

The main issue I seem to be encountering in my pre-potential purchase research is lack of support in some games for super widescreen monitors, primarily with respect to Horizontal FOV adjustment in FPS games.
People think its cheating to be able to see more H-FOV than them.

The other thing I'm not keen on is the 8ms response time and the 60Hz refresh rate.

This is one of the first of this kind of monitor available commercially and at a reasonable (but still wallet-hurting) price.

What do you guys think? the future of Gaming monitors? or just a Gimmick?
I think I will probably wait for the issues above with games and the monitors themselves to be rectified but i'm interested to see what others think.

Interesting thread as I have been looking at investing in a larger monitor since selling the 27" iMac.

I've been looking at one of these:

With regards to your question, I think you would just end up using it as two screens as very little would work with the aspect ratio without looking stretched. Also, you would have to sit really far back as it is so big!

I like it.  Not a terrible price, either.

I'd be hesitant until a few more were on the market.

But I know very little of these things.

Not bad - that is a huge resolution, but as you say refresh not brill for a new 'state of the art' monitor.

Definately worth waiting till more out!

Ok, now LG has made a Massive 34" 3440x1440 one of these monitors this is now at the top of my PC Purchases List.

This is actually quite a good review of it

(Admin, Fix that link would you plz)

At £800 its a hefty price tag but this seems like such a better idea than a 4K monitor.  This works out at the same height as my 27" 1920x1200 16x10 monitor but a whopping 8 1/2" wider and with higher pixel density.
And the refresh rate is 5ms on this which is now nicely into gaming territory.

Interesting

I was going to get two 24" monitors (with a lower resolution) to use with my 13" Macbook, so x3 screens in total, but I like the idea of one massive, super crisp monitor.

How do games work on it? Do they just take up 75% of the screen or something?

Game support varies, a LOT more modern games these days now support super wide resolutions, almost all racing games do for a start, Battlefield 4 and other new FPS shooters do as do all mainstream simulator games.

The BIG advantage over 16x9 users is the peripheral vision this gives you, you can be in a situation where your viewing angle is sufficiently wider than other folks to start shooting at them before they can even see you're there.

For the main game i'll be playing in the future, Star Citizen this will be an advantage in the Space Flight-Sim / Dogfighting situations that game will be heavily reliant on.  + Next Car game makers Bugbear have already confirmed Super-wide resolutions will be supported.

A lot of older games allow you to Manually force these resolutions by editing launch text files for them.

If not before, I will be buying this or a very similar screen in September this year.

I wait for the curved super widescreens...bound to be the next step.

EDIT: actually I'd be holding out for the super wide, curved, gesture controlled screens (proximity rather than touch)...  The technology is already available so it's just a matter of time.

Now that you have used it for a while, what do you think of it?

Is there anything you would like improved?

Can you change the monitor height with the stand supplied?

I need to change my monitor setup soon.

I'm hugely impressed with this monitor, the Picture quality on it is excellent, the only slight complaint most people have had with this monitor is some minor backlight bleeding in the lower left corner, this is there on my screen when I looked for it but in all honesty I haven't really noticed it in normal use.

Improvements a height adjustable stand would be nice, as you can see from the pic above I built a monitor shelf into my desk a long time ago and it sites perfectly on there.

It could do with being cheaper, but that will happen anyway.

A few more games need to give you full FoV control, non FPS games are very good at this which is nice and some games just look weird, Worms for example has extra menus visible at the sides of the screen that would not normally be seen on a 16:9 monitor.

I'm really hoping that GTA V will work right in 21:9

Mags?  what year is this 1992?

Oh yeah, and the extra-wide screen is great for viewing images... of Cars, see above photo for reference

Great, I'm going to have a serious think about buying one as I think it would be fantastic for design.
