55 Pontiac Trans
« on: June 26, 2006, 11:11:28 am »
Well i thought i had this solved after speeking with art carr. I figured i would call a couple of places to see how much to  rebuild with the parts i would get from Art.
The hydro boxes used in alot of the 50's american cars were also used in rolls royce's so i called a restoration place and asked who they used. The guy was more than helpful and gave me 2 numbers.

Called the first guy and to say he was on another planet was an understatment. He would only build it with his own parts and wanted the car aswell. rebuild price was £4k

CAlled the second guy and again wouldnt rebuild with parts from art only there own parts which he couldnt guarantee would take the power his price was better but still £2k

Looks like i will have to call art up and see if he will give me a price to rebuild the box. will also need to figure shipping costs.

The last alternative is to retro fit the TH350 i have

No its cause the box is a bastad to re build, its not like any other auto box and is a bitch to setup as it has 2 bands that actualy move on the change

cause i have no rear motor mounts, if i use the th350 trans i need to dsesign and fabricate an adaptor plate, thes space the flexplate and then create some kind of rear motor mount.

As soon as i get a price from art im gonna probably ship my trans across to him. Shipping would be about $600 for a round trip

Does the box still shift up/down and kick down automatically if a "push botton" kit is fitted ?

Have you spoken to Dick at GM Automatics in Dagenham. He rebuilt the trans on my 59 Olds (4 speed TurboHydramatic thingy) about eighteen months ago, cant remember the exact figure but i'm sure it was around a grand. you can usually haggle him down a bit if you pay readies too.
