"LAN" over the Internet ?
« on: February 20, 2007, 06:21:50 pm »
I know we've just had a LAN but I've got the urge to play BF2 again.

I played some single player games last night but it wasn't the same.

I did consider going online to play but haven't got a clue how to and am likely to get pwned big time.

Is it possible to set up a game over the internet which is limited to small numbers of peeps ?
And is restricted to certain players ?

Yes it is you just need someone to make the server and set the restrictions or easier a Password.
Then anyone who has the password can enter the game.

I play BF2142 dont have BF2

I'd be up for that (a private match that is, not just any random server)

As long as the host has a quick connection its just a case of making gate 21 from memory open on the router.

I have my mac mini set up as an FTP so i can connect into it from any where in the world

I think the router port varies from game to game.  21 is ftp, so it wouldn't be that for games.

Yes, but you can't run programs on it.  You need a game server to be running.  You can get servers to do such a thing, but they are more expensive, and probably beyond what we would want to pay for it.

servers are pricey,

if someone here has a fast enough connection and (on a secure forum) posts the IP and password thats all you need to do to connect up.

What you need is some one who works where there would be a super fast connection say a college

I don't have time to install a server with an OS, patch it, configure it, install the game and so on, otherwise I would.

Lol,

It should be possible to run a BF2 server from any of our connections. With only a few players it should be fine.
I'm definitely up for it.

I'm thinking as a stop-gap between LANs it could be cool.

Maybe a couple of hours one evening or a few hours one weekend evening.
