Ryan's Camaro Project Thread...
« on: October 18, 2005, 05:04:20 pm »
OK, lets start with the full details...
Recently Phil informed me that a guy locally has an 88 Camaro that he unfortunatly rolled leaving it with a twisted chassis, no good panels & a insurance write off.  He then decided to Part the car out & bought a V6 Hardtop Camaro to put his engine, box etc etc into.
Initially Phil, Dean & myself were looking for some other parts from this car so I went round to have a look, take some (crap) piccies & generally see what was there/left.

At this point I was talking to Steve about his plans for what he wanted to keep from the car & what was going into the V6 & at the time he had no plans of selling the Car as it stood, I phoned him up again last week meerly to express our continued interest in the parts we were after at which point he mentioned that due to health problems resulting from his accident he was now considering selling the car as it stood & would I be interested in buying a project...

This is where my ears really pricked up... Definately interested!  The engine his car has got is basically exactly what I wanted to do to mine, performance that is good but isn't gearbox crunching yet still maintaining the 30+ MPG that i need from a daily driver

The car as a whole isn't bad, basically the only thing wrong with it is the Body is F***ed it still drives as he's had it going up & down the lane behind his house, albeit crabbing along & the engine has been run regularly since the accident as he wanted to use it for this other car. It's this that gives me confidence that the engine wasn't destroyed as a result of the crash, although a closer inspection will be done.

Phil has kindly volunteered to come & have a look at it with me if Steve decides he definately wants to sell it whole, I'm keeping my fingers crossed especially as we decided at the weekend that my current engine needs a LOT of work if it's to survive...

As i've said many times before... updates ensue...

Ryan

So what's the plan? Take the0 (V6 ) engine and put it in yours?

If so, what's happening with the v8 ( ) in yours?  I might be interested in it if it hasn't already got a destination.

Ah, didn't realise it was only a 305. I want at least a 327.

Stroke it  Graeme found out when looking at it for dean that you can stroke a 305 to a 327 or a 340...

I wanted something basically sound that wouldn't need a lot of money. It's to go in the car whilst I take the 400 out for the full works.

It needs to be sellable when the 400 goes back in.

well unfortunatly we decided mine needs a lot of work (that was the conclusion wasn't it) so I don't think mine would be a wise one to buy unfortunatly.  The plan for it was to stick it on eBay & see if it sells basically

Unless dean wants another table ;)

Yes and no. I have a 327 block and crank - that's it. It needs machining and absolutely everything buying for it.   If I find a complete runner/something that only needs a bit of work I might be tempted.

Some bit yes, some no.  Not sure exactly what bits yet, but it is worth bearing in mind.

If it's just engine + box + bits, no more than a grand.

I hadn't thought that he'd have done that so you're right that would make a good start.
dunno if he'd tell me that though

The engine is not a stock engine, when I was there the first time (before he wanted to sell it) he was saying he's got reciepts for over £4,000 worth of parts & work on it.  I think its got aftermarket fuel injection on it as I don't remember it looking like TPI when I was there

Even so you can by a rebuilt and upgraded 350cid on Ebay for £1000 ish - Which hasn't rolled.

Don't forget although it runs, you can't  put it under any pressure with the car in its current state.

Don't insult the guy, but be tough.  Weigh up excactly what he's spent . . . . Also remember you're taking the whole car . . . after you're finished with it you are gonna have to dispose of it.  That itself is cost and hassle.

This is my only reservation with it, even though he was making headway with plans to re-house it in another car he hasn't been able to properly run it AFIK since the accident.
Why I am so keen on using this car is that with care I reckon that a some of the cost of the Job can be re-couped by selling the remaining components of the car, which are all nice.  Even after we've canibalised the interior parts that the 3 of us want  there's still a lot left which I know won't make a fortune back but it all counts.  Major parts are the Box & rear end (unless its Discs in which case we're switching mine over! its not a POSI)
