For anyone whos interested, heres my bus and some progress on the project, its slow at the moment as the bus keeps breaking itself and cash is getting tight

You cant beat coco-pops gaskets

Owned it for a few weeks now, have an issue with stalling that needs sorting (not going to build up a new engine just yet) rebuilt the carb and tuned it a few times but still doesnt want to know

I also have to rebuild the front beam as the previous owner decided to bodge it to get it so low...    So the ride is shockingly bad..  So a new weedeater beam from Creative Engineering and some decent shocks..  http://www.creative-engineering.com/cgi-bin/shop/web_store.cgi?page=beams.html&cart_id=2688_887

But while im at it, I bought some brake discs from a '71 bay to replace my drums which are pants..

I quite like the look of the old VW buses, but having owned one many years ago, no matter what you do they still drive like pants

If that's what presses your button, enjoy CP

Ah but with some cars, it don't matter how slow they are - they just exude the cool factor.

Yes sir

Everyone seems to be taking their engine out at the moment so I didnt want to be different and followed the trend...

Plan is to start with the engine bay, POR15 weld / wiring etc etc, then build up a good engine then rebuild the front beam - can anyone tell me about POR15, is it the best antirust stuff to use?  Wheres good to buy from etc etc?

Basically I want something that I can brush on over not-too dodgy areas and it sort the rust out and prevent anymore happening.  I also want to use it as a hammerite coat when parts have been welded up to coat them and protect them.  Is POR15 what I should be using?

Gotta love the fact that only 6 bolts hold the Vdub engines in

Yup, got one here still sealed - it is the big size can.

You have a big tin of POR15 for 20 quid?   Is it this one http://www.frost.co.uk/item_Detail.asp?productID=9069 473ml?

No.  That one isn't a "top coat".

I have "Chassis coat, black" - the 900-something millilitre can.

I used regular primers over bare metal and top-coated in Chassis coat.

Reading this

http://www.frost.co.uk/item_Detail.asp?productID=8202&frostProductName=POR15%20Chassis%20Coat%20Black%20(473ml)&catID=28&frostCat=Rust&frostSubCat=POR-15&subCatID=37

it seems like that chassis coat is to be applied OVER POR15 to protect it even more, I need POR15 rust preventatitive paint first though..

Ideally, yes.

I would've done if I was dealing with all bare metal.

As it was the 'bay in the Maro was good so I just top-coated it.

Worked fine for me . . I suppose it depends on what you're starting with.

Did a little more to the bus yesterday when the sun was out

I am in the middle of sorting the wiring out but I figured I wanted a nice clean working area, so I decided to repair and clean up the front cab floor.  I lifted up the front rubber mat and it was not *that* bad, I think it must have had alot of the floor replaced at some point, I can even see that someone has had a good go at it with Hammerite.  Although none of this I know for sure as there was NO history with the bus, pretty much just the V5 :?

Passenger side had a bit more surface rust with evidence of a long retangular repair about 30cm long.  Seems to have been welded in quite well.

I wirebrushed and cleaned up the whole area chipping away the flakes, then got the POR15 out.  (I bought the 6 small tins of POR15 in the end RK, tanks anyway )

POR15 = good stuff

Finish the wiring next I think along with completing the dash, putting it all back together etc..
