so those 3 will hold the weight of half the roof, or more if its tilted down at that end.. ?

Basically, yes. *

The run-off is about 1:50 so the angle is next-to-nothing.

However any angle will increase sideways load hence the addition of knee-bracing (in both directions).

Even flat roofed structures encounter side loads (eg. wind).

Now for the "*"

There will be further supports to break the span of the roof down in to 3 smaller sections.
The steels I'm using are designed to be used "upright" - that's how they're rated.
However, I need the additional headroom (the difference is 63mm compared to 200mm) so turned them "toes down".
Because of this the deflection is increased, hence the introduction of further support (not yet fitted).

Long story short, It'll all make sense within a couple of weeks.

No.  Not at all.

Technically it's a shed - no foundations and no "permanent" walls.

Plus it's within all height/size/volume regulations required by the council.

Planning will be the easy bit, especially as it's not a habitable area.  Building control, however, is alot more complex.

I'd love to make this "extension" of mine out of bricks and mortar but the building control is a headache.

Your best bet is to see someone at your local council re. planning but mainly building control.

They're normally quite helpful and will give you advice and leaflets . . . remember that all local councils' requirements are slightly different so never assume anything without seeing an "official" first.

The regs for garages are relatively simple, in comparison to rooms.

Planning is pretty much guaranteed (providing you're within certain heights, volumes and are not within certain property boundaries).

You can issue your own drawings (handdrawn or CAD) but it's normally beneficial to employ a draftsman to do the work for you as they'll have some grasp of what's going to be asked for (what spec glass for windows, what/where ventillation strips, foundation make up, DPM . . etc)
It'll cost you more this way but will save MAJOR hassle with it constantly being rejected for silly little omissions.

May take you up on that.

I've got the day off as the engineers are fitting the new boiler - so I thought i'd make myself useful and attempt to get the roof on the extension.

We'll see how it goes . . . . what time are you likely to be over ?

Weeeeeelll, the weather, unfortunately wasted most of my day-off yesterday so the head-start myself and Ian made on monday night seemed kinda wasted.

However, after the rain finally stopped at 6pm last night I dragged myself back out there and continued . . .

All boards are now cut and fixed to the roof.  I need to add a few timber screws along the edges and trim the edges back a little but that's about an hours work - tops.

Next job is the roof-felting.  And that's a priority . . . looking at the weather it really needs to be done ASAP !

No pictures to add (P.C's sick) but it's really coming on.  Everything's going to plan - only the weather is slowing progress at the mo'.

Had another go at it last night . . . got the roof structure finished and fixed down and got the underlay fitted, too.

Was hoping to get the Capsheet on as well but no chance - hoping I can fit that in over the weekend at some point . . . .

Job for tonight is to clear some of the crap out of the back garden.
