Hi Guys,

After going off on a complete tangent with my dad about our Camaro, can any of you tell me if its likely to be fitted with an LSD?

I say this as our old '87 Firebird had one and was a completely stock car and was the base model with air con or anything electric.

Is there anyway of checking the VIN or anyway of telling by looking at it?

Cheers in advance!

Andy

HardRockCamaro

Check the RPO codes on the sticker in the glovebox.

G80 means Limited Slip Diff.

According to my sales figures 16% of Camaro's in 19991 had one.

HardRockCamaro

The VIN code doesn't tell you if it has a limited slip diff...

Just jack the ar$e end up and spin the wheels.

I'm assuming that if it has a limited slip diff when your turn one rear wheel,
the other will turn in the opposite direction

Andy

If it has a limited slip diff i believe they would turn in the same direction. It only slips on road contact when going around a bend and one wheel is forced to turn slower than the outside one.

On 3rd Gens you only got a LSD if you opted for the L98 5.7TPI Motor first or got the 5.0TPI with Manual Transmission that gave you the Borg Warner 10 Bolt LSD Rear with either a 3.45:1 or 3.27:1 Ratio respectively.

Oops looked at the wrong year, find the page for the '91 throught the menu, the numbers are slightly different but i believe its the same idea.

Ah well, our old Firebird definately had one as the guys who we took it for an MOT at said they couldn't do part of the test (they'd never seen one before). The geeza at Autopontiac confirmed it and it handled like a biatch.

That was a 305 TBI, autobox with absolutely no options. Was a lovely car for that fact too. I suppose someone could've bolted one on, but that would be a bit far fetched.

So its looking likely that it hasn't... bugger, i owe him a £5

Not quite, I have a 5.0TPI with auto and have the LSD.

Depends how the car was optioned up, but the 5.7 at least had it as standard (as you said).

Correct.

You can work out your ratio by counting the prop rotations to wheel rotations, also.

Just checked the boot for the RPO codes and I don't have a G80...

For some reason that VIN decoder won't work for me Fubes F-Body

Just tried it myself and it said "NOT a VALID 17 digit VIN entered, please try again"

Have you checked the number ?

Andy

Well that typical. Trust whats on the MOT sheet and its nothing like the plate on the car!

The first 'F' should be a '1' and the 'H' should be an 'M'... I'll check it more closely after the next MOT, make sure they don't get it confused with a Matiz or something.

Which is double scary because all your MOT details are automatically uploaded to the Police ANPR system
