Having driven and very nearly bought an elise they handle like a gokart, i have never driven a car with steering as direct as that which makes for a fun drive

Yeah I keep meaning to go and have a test drive up at the MK dealer. But they only let the cars out for demo when it's dry out.

On my way home last night a nice silver MK1 Elise pulled out infront of me, sadly they where driving like a total twat, far too much traffic on a single lane road. Still their aftermarket exhaust sounded pretty decent.

Anyhow followed them for 5 miles or so until the road turns into dual carriage way.

Raced them 3 or 4 times from various speeds. Man I was really surprised, it wasn't even a race I just walked them. First one was from like 50/60mph I kept the pedal down until I saw 130'ish just to prove the point. I think they where best part of an 1/8th of a mile back

I really thought it would have been closer. And yeah they certainly where trying as on some of the runs they started infront of me, or I let them have the hit.

DISCLAIMER: This story is of course totally imaginary and bears no relation to reality.

Finally got the nitrous on and tuned over the weekend.  The car is a 1998 SS with stock heads, MS3 cam and Pacesetters into TSP True Duals.  The TNT F1 150hp shot runs into the FAST 90/NW 90 combo.  The numbers are through my Moser 9" with 4.11 gears.

The timing tuner is pulling 3deg of timing and with the 150 fuel jet, the car leaned out.  We're now running the 200 fuel jet, which is too rich.  I'm going to be doing some research in the upcoming weeks to find a good "middle-of-the-road" fuel jet to lean this thing out and hopefully pick up some power. :)  The window switch is set from 4000-6500, we'll likely drop it down to 3500 before we hit the track with it.  Bottle pressure was between 930-940.

The red lines are motor, the green are on the hose.

Keep in mind that these are the 93 octane SAE corrected numbers with smoothing set at 5. The dyno was done on the stock 17s with 20lbs of air in the Mickey T drag radials. The belt was of course on the car and you can rest assured that not one dyno trick was used.

Special thanks to Tick Performance in Mt. Airy, NC for taking their time and making sure every little detail about the install was perfect and Alvin Anderson of PCMForLess for going out of his way to make sure everything was safe on the sauce.

Next up: heads. :)

Is that you parked next to me at Classics on the Common this summer?

I thought I recognised your 'plate off' antics!

I went off and wandered about for ages so wasn't really by my car. Cracking show this year though.

Yeah that's me

Got an almost identical pic somewhere.

But yay great showk, have been for the past for years. Managed to take a different car each time also

That may be something that Titsy will be interested in ?

That's quite a shopping list, as most of us say " You can't have too much power ! "

I think the problem is knowing when to stop ?

lol, this is actualy the stripped down shopping list.

I grew up relishing the stories on Zora's specially prepared ZL1 Corvette running in the 10.90s on slicks. Love those stories. And it's almost hard to imagine that 35 years later, a showroom stock Corvette, albeit a 2006 Z06, with no change to the car other than using DOT drag radial tires could eclipse the times posted by that fabled ZL1. But it happened today at Maryland International Raceway in Budds Creek, Maryland.

On my first pass of the day, after an hour-long cool-down and change of rear tires to the BFGs, I ran a clean pass with the type of launch and 1-2 shift I've been looking for. Here are the splits:

60'........1.679 3650 launch rpm with a fast clutch release and fast throttle squeeze
330'......4.625
660'......7.046 102.61
1000'.....9.114
1320'...10.856 129.50

[yt]469NvIOiz7U[/yt]

Density Altitude at the time of the pass was negative 850 feet on my TAG weather station. Air temperature was 51 degrees. Barometer was excellent and humidity was low.

Track surface temperature was 60 degrees, kissed sweetly by full sun.

Soon after returning to the pits, amid a mild celebration, I was visited by a track official on a motor-bike for a discussion of the safety equipment in my car. He noted it was apparent from the tower that my UnderArmor compression top wasn't a fire-jacket. And his check inside the car found no roll-bar. He complimented the pass and I took the hint, agreeing to slow down. In keeping with that pledge, I made one more pass. After bogging the launch to comply with guidance, was then somehow unable to keep from driving the rest of the pass...well...fast. I picked up the slip, 11.03 129.22 1.80. And that was it for the day.

Special thanks to dgdoc, Steve, and Bill for their moral support and assistance crewing the car, today.

For the record, nothing has been changed on my car since delivery other than the driver's experience. ECU/PCM is stock. Air filter is original. Nothing after-market at all.

I did dismount the stock rears and strap on three-year-old BFG 315.35.17 DRs, graciously lent to me by Dick Link. :thumb These tires are perfect for the C6Z in that they don't overwhelm the finicky LS7 clutch. And, if properly heated, they can provide excellent traction. I also raised the stock front tires to 40 psi; above that the DIC starts nagging on start-up.

If anyone wishes to draw a distinction that "bone stock" must include "stock tires," he/she may wish to revisit scores of threads I've started over the past six years describing adventures at the drag strip with bone-stock Z06s either on (1) stock tires or (2) drag radials. I'm always clear about the tires on the car any particular day, in the thread title.

On shift points, as alway, I tried to make each shift as close to the limiter as possible without kissing it. On this 10.85 pass my shift points were good, at 7000 except for the 2-3 which occurred at about 6700. So, was not a perfect pass.

As for powershifting, I eased the throttle on the 1-2 and 2-3 but did powershift the 3-4. My experience has shown that you can shift fast while still easing the throttle. Takes practice.

I've written frequently that it takes 30-50 passes for a driver to approach his lower limit in a new plaform. That 10.85 was my 52d pass in the car.

I have some video footage of uncertain quality (new guy on the camera) and some audio files of the exhaust on the pass, plus a spreadsheet with split/incremental analysis. I'll work on these over the weekend and edit them into this post. I am posting the slip of this record pass, certified by an MIR tower official.

I close by offering my continued appreciation to the Corvette Team and extended family for the C6Z06, a truly amazing car and the new legend. And somehow I know, Zora is pleased.

Edit (061105): I've added a thumb of my normal spreadsheet analysis of the 10.85 pass at a negative DA against my 11.06 at a positive DA last week. It clearly shows the small contribution made by the better DA. But improved driving in the first 330' is the main factor that made the pass memorable.

Best to all,

Ranger

Projects / My long term project - LS1 z/28

Alright guys!!

I met a few f you Sunday (5th Nov).

This is my 99 (2000 reg) Camaro z/28:

The Ls1 is quite capable in stock trim:

But I find myself wanting more!

So, my plan is to make a totally bad ass street car that can play ball with the best, in corners as well as the straight. Sadly money's tight at present so it may take a little time. Plus I keep spending money on my other vehicles too:

Triumph TR7 V8 - lots done and even more spent over the years. V8 conversion, cammed, heads, 4 brl carb, LT's, exhaust, big brakes, interior and lots of other mods. Currently is in need of a new diff as I bust the last one

Land Rover Discovery (for the dirt!!!) - Just had to fit a new engine as I slightly over fueled the last one and blew it up, but it did make great power for a diesel Also just fitting a new floor as the old one was rusted out. Hope to have it back on the road by the New Year ready to do some more competative trials. As you can see its only ever so slightly stock.

So to the z/288 build:

Currently the car is pretty stock. Just a SLP Loudmouth catback exhaust. I've got a set of UMI Performance SFC's (subfame connectors) waiting to go on. I've also performed the FRA (free ram air) and throttle body bump stop mod. Next up will be porting the throttle body.

Ls6 intake manifold - Texas Speed & Performance
EFI Live - FlashScan Commercial Tuning software - EFI Live
Thunder Racing Complete Braking Package Baer Eradispeed Rotors - Thunder Racing

This should make for quite nice setup with over 400rwhp in a car that should stop and corner with the best

Will probably run some nice 17x9.5 American Racing Torque Trust II rims. With Mickey Thompson Street ET Radial P275/40R17 on the rear.

After this will probably look at some nice heads to raise the SCR/DCR and increase flow. Similar setups have made over 480rwhp (manuals).

Of course I may change my mind and go for a Procharger centrifugal bower or GMR Speed single turbo setup instead.

Sadly the stock 10 bolt rear will probably not last, although with an auto it doesn't take the same pounding as a manual car. Also the 4l60e trannys hate high revs and a cam really needs at least 6500rpm shift points so I guess in time it will be toast also.

Probably won't be able to get started on much until next year, but hopefully will have the SFC's done before then as well as finishing off the ported TB.

Will post progress and any changes.
