Scotch briting ally by hand has to be up there with the most annoying stuff to get on your hands.

Yeah, constantly reminding yourself not to touch ANYTHING (especially white door frames, white doors and freshly bathed children) !!!

Quoting: Andy
Are you going with a crackle finish?

Ta-dah !

Apologies for the picture quality . . . I think my phone struggled to focus on the pattern !

I am still for the door-top finishing...

The plan is to re-use the original plastic trim . . . albeit it has to be fitted a little differently.
Originally it had plastic bosses which went through the door card and had twist-nuts on to secure . . . Unfortunately 90% of the plastic bosses sheared off when removing (or attempting to remove) the twist-nuts.

I plan to drill through the plastic (in as few places as possible) and use identical screws as used in the standard 3rd-gen dashboard to secure it with . . .

Should look O.K.

I also need to re-fit the mirror joystick to the drivers door card (that is the extra big hole on that card).

I also dropped the main steering column into the fab shop for some "work" yesterday to try and solve/reduce the steering woes !

You couldn't make it up.

The fab shop we use went into liquidation last night.  The administrators are in and have changed the locks.

It's looking like I now will have to firstly prove that the steering column is mine and then wait f*** knows how long to (hopefully) get it back !!!

ianjpage

You got to be kidding .... you just couldnt make it up hope you manage to get it back soon!

Roadkill

I'm on the road tomorrow scouting for a new fabrication shop in the Beds/Bucks/Herts area . . . we put through £££,£££'s a year with this supplier and now all of our work has now ground to a halt !

1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ (modern classic daily driver)

Good news - my steering column has been smuggled out .... but I don't know as yet whether the work was done or not ....

Andy.   Where is your company based ?  We need light to medium weight steel fabrication so cutting, welding some bending, too.  Access to a paintline would be a bonus.
We use another company for the really heavy stuff.

I'll PM some more details of what we need when I'm at my P.C but last year we spent nearly a million on work like this !   It's all fairly easy stuff, too.

Andy

Based in Bourne End, Bucks.

We mainly do CNC Machining and the like, but we started out as a fabricators. Best bet is if you send over some example jobs and I'll see if we have the capacity.

We do have a paint room set up, for a component we make its perfect. We stove enamel most paints so depends on what type of paint you're expecting for a finish.

EDGE

dean might need a new fabricator but you guys need a new website... i can hook you up ;)

Andy

Haha! Now now! That website has probably earnt my company more money than any other method of publicity. It's all down to the random page with letters and numbers on it

That's very good news, those Administrators usually have the place locked up like Fort Knox and don't even let a paper clip out, unless you pay up front.

Roadkill

The thing I had going for me was that the guy I dealt with (former owner now manager) owns the building otherwise, yeah, i'd be fooked !

Roadkill

Still no more news on the steering column.

Myself and Ian managed to get a little bit done on the door cards after Billing on Saturday, too . . . Albeit not entirely successful.

The cards themselves are on and the mirror plate (on the D/S) is fitted and connected, too.

We've fitted the new inner sweeps to the interior plastic trim but hit a snag on re-fitting the trim.  Long story, cba.

Just re-insured her . . . £215, fully comp @ 1500 miles per year, with ALL modifications listed (it took a while) !!!

Roadkill

Got round the issue with the door cards . . . It was the way the new inner sweeps fitted using screws . . . the back protruded so I ground them off !

The top parts then clipped in as they should but the "fuzzy" bit near the mirror stood way too proud and caused the window to Jam in the front rubber when closing ???

It happened on both doors so was no coincident . . . .

We removed said fuzzy bits and everything went smoothly from there . . .

Here's a pic of the painted doors & cards and original top trims fitted.

The next one shows the "pull" strap mocked up (I need to order longer bolts for these).

The last one gives you an idea of how, despite being completely different from stock, they work fairly well . . . . at least, IMHO, and that's all that matters.

Apart from getting the bolts to fit the pull handles I'm utterly at a stand still without the steering columns back !!

They look good

Given your excellent attention to detail, what about the enlarged hole for the door handles

You could fix some rubber flaps onto the door and then put the door card over then

Roadkill

Ah, that bit isn't quite finished yet.  I need to fix the pull straps securely first to see how the panel sits.  Then I'll cut a small plate to slot into the visible hole.

ianjpage

they do look good those door cards with the top fitted now

O.K, Summit kept messing me about on the delivery for the steering hub so I sent an email telling them where to go . . .

They refunded me in full this morning.

I've now sent inquiries out to another company I've found who sell them (Amazon do them but won't ship to the U.K ! )

I have the steering column back with the extension part . . . It's better, but not perfect . . . . I need to offer it up to see how I proceed with it . . . .

No reply from the U.S company BUT on doing further Googling and trying variations of the part number and manufacturer I found them for sale on Amazon UK !

The total cost via Summit for the hub, wheel, shipping and duty was £229 but through Amazon it was £269 (inc delivery) - £40 more but I did opt for a more expensive and better wheel because they didn't have the one I originally was gonna go for.

Dunno - They reckon I should have it within 2 weeks but I'm not holding my breath !!

Thanks to Ryan, too, for assistance yesterday evening - plus it's always nice to see Poppy !!!

Roadkill

The steering wheel and quick-release have been shipped, apparently, and should be with me on 1st June.

Time's starting to get away from me again . . . the weather's been crap, various other things are adding delays here and there and I'm away on holiday for a week next week.

I have, hopefully, got all the DVLA-related issues sorted, though.  I've compiled a letter and had it signed to authenticate the changes made . . . there's still a question over the serial number on the engine but hopefully I've got around this.

I'll find out shortly . . . . .

Am hoping to spend a few hours on the steering column over the weekend . . hopefully get that a bit closer to finished.

ianjpage

here's hoping that the delivery day is a real one this time!!

Least sounds like some progress on the divvyla front then, hopefully you get something done to steering!
